ok.

Daughter #1 (10) tells me today that she wants to try her hand at golf

should i :

1/ take her to the range myself ? let her have a whack with my clubs ??

... or ..

2/ get her to a kids clinic and let the Pro's teach her how to do it right from the start ?

anyone else had this situation arise lately ?

thoughts ??????

Take he to your clubs putting green. I've been doing that with jaz on and off for a couple of years now. She has a little plastic putter, and we get a couple of balls each and I pretty much let her do anything she wants. I have been guiding her to putting right handed, but she often just walks up and hits it left handed too.

I don't push her too much at all. At one stage she was just putting the balls on the lip of the hole and taping them in. But she loved it. And she gets a high five for every one she sinks. I've even gone to the chipping green with her, but she still uses a putter.

Let them find out if they like it first, without too much structure thrown in. If she seems to enjoy it, take her out for 9 with you in a buggy when it's not busy. Let her hit so often and you'll get a better idea if she likes it. Much like onewood did with mitchell.

Then when she decides she wants to get better look at some group kid lessons. They do them at my club on wednesdays I think, and while you have to book the kids in the lessons are free.

Jade (8) is just starting to play again, after a couple of years off ;) Matthew (4) comes to the range each Thursday night with me.

I gave Jade some tips yesterday, so she would enjoy it more cause she lacks a bit of strength unfortunately. She was happy by the end as she could see it going straight.

Matthew just stands there and whacks it, no tips and none probably for a few years I reckon. He's a boy, he doesn't listen....

They each have a club each (with some serious popups on them ;) ) but it's up to them how they hit and how often. I say try this then walk away. As long as I watch their good ones that's all that matters.

Pete,

what club do they have each ? 5 iron, 6 iron ??? and what length should it be so that it's easy for them to hit.

I might buy an old iron and take her to the range so she can have a hit with me ;)

Plenty of clubs and amart have kids sized and weighted clubs. Don't need many, one or 2 irons and a putter to start.

chuck them in a clinic.

they are well supervised, have other kids to socialise with and tey don't get taught bad habits by bad golfers like us!

yeah i thought of that mate, but i don't wanna outlay a lot of dosh on gear until i'm sure she wants to keep at it.

might just buy her a cut down 6 iron for now and see how we go :-D

thanks mate, if you could bring it with you to the Nudgee Plate i'd appreciate it 8)

I was actually going to ask Amanda if she had any spare irons lying around. Samantha is about the same size as Mandy ;)

How long until these kids end up hoing their clubs...

I can see the post already in the pro shop...

"35 inch long diamana shaft for sale, only used for 3 months, have grown out of it now...will trade for 37inch diamana or similar"

The range at capalaba has kids group lessons. They only charge for the cost of balls ($10 bucket) I was thinking of taking my little mosters along for a look.

careful when you cut clubs down, dont make the shaft so stiff that no one could hit it.

I think I have most of a set hanging around - they are fairly light Mizunos - let me check tomorrow before I go to Camden Valley.

Jarro, don't cut any sticks down, it will still be too heavy and will end up doing more harm than good. Mine have a 7 iron and a 3 wood, I bought them from a component place and made them myself. They still wanna whack it, more fun with a wood ;)

Steel shaft is cheaper and still pretty light, when you think how short the club is.

Take them along with you for a while, like most parents you know they lose interest in something after 5 minutes, no point outlaying dosh then regretting it. If they show heaps of interest, get them into something....

That's enough common sense for one day, now back to ho'ing ;)

Also, when they've had enough it's time to stop. Don't push em to stay out longer. When jaz is sick of putting we go home. Don't want to ruin the fun.

Tayla told me today she wants to play golf with Dad. Guess I better improve faster now. She could be better than Dad straight off :)

My little girl loves golf clubs and balls. In fact, golf is one of her limited vocab words that gets used correctly. I've taken her to the putting green and she has lots of fun, but tends to want to pick the ball up and throw it off the green! I want to get her a little putter soon. I think she's gonna be a lefty, which is a shame, so may get her a bullseye style just in case.

hehe. Tylah likes to have a putt on each hole. It consists of putting the ball down about 2" from the hole and tapping it in. Very amusing.

I bought my nephew a set of plastic clubs and he has a bash around the yard... he's only two. But his father is pushing it a lot more now. Even took away some of his other toys so that's all he plays with.

I was given some clubs by my folks when I was about 8 - 10 years old. I used to play lots then (so did my parents!) Pity I didn't stay with it!!
