Yarra Bend would probably be the best bet

When I lived in Hawthorn many moons ago I played a bit at Yarra Bend a fair bit - I'd recommend it. It's very close to the city, but around the back half of the course you sometimes manage to forget you're in the middle of a big city, which is nice.

All of the inner city courses are a bit of a dog fight and expect to have a long round if playing these. I prefer to drive a bit and not wait all day to play your next shot.

My favs are Growling Frog, Eynesbury (although out west). Goonawara is ok as well. If playing on the weekend try and book as early as you can to beat the crowds.

I don't think I've ever played a round under 5 hours at Eynesbury due to weekend crowds, and I'm told Growling Frog is similar (on weekends). I'd be interested to know if it has changed though, because I'm planning a golf weekend with mates in a few weeks and Growling Frog is on the shortlist.

Yeah i haven't played either in a while. But when i did (well over a year ago) i made sure i got off before 8.30pm.

The back nine can be a bit slow though if they use both tees.

Well this idea kind of got thrown for a loop since I don't have the clothes to meet dress code for most courses haha

Sounds like you need to get yourself down to your nearest op shop. :)

When I play around I try to make sure I get off before 8.30pm too.

Although playing the back nine usually speeds things up, especially if both tees are being played!

I'm a member out there...Saturdays are your best bet, as Sundays tend to be their big day for social groups...read slow rounds and unraked bunkers.

Rough is back to brutal...so bring some pills.

Haha the mozzies come out at around 9.30pm so you want to be in before then. They're worse than the flies ;)

Update from my golf weekend. Played Bacchus Marsh West under the banner of showing some love to a country goat track, and Goonawarra.

BMW was cheap and cheerful, and you could probably get on there in basketball shorts and a black t-shirt, so that's a bonus. Most of the greens were well-watered too, but some of the fairways were really struggling. Overall it wasn't terrible when you consider it is a volunteer course and the green fee was only $20.

Goonawarra was in really good nick apart from quite a few pitch marks on greens that people hadn't repaired. Very green all the way around. Lots of width for wayward types and some enormous greens, which meant lots of three-putting for me. Interesting track. Long-ish without being stupidly difficult like many of the premium tracks are these days (*cough* Eynesbury). My hacker mates were very impressed and want to go back.

Goonawarra is a decent track for what it is.
played it a few times now and quite enjoy it.
A few guys i know went there as members from my club, were back in 6 months as they couldnt get tee times in comps on weekends.

Sunshine is a sleeper. Some cracking holes especially on the back 9. 10th on a windy day is as intimidating as they come. Green fee players are welcome most days.

I liked Sunshine when I played it a few years ago. Looking forward to playing it again in a few weeks when the Vic Champs descends upon the western suburbs

I'm a member at Sunshine and i think it's a good course. The front and back 9 are fairly different but it's definitely a good test off the blues as it's always windy up there.
