View Full Version : Swing weights - irons - what effects?

Hey Guys.

Since I am pretty ignorant of these things, can someone give me a very quick overview of how the swing weight affects your swing etc. That's if there is a quick overview...

Does having a heavier swing weight (I'm talking irons with steel shafts) mean you would probably swing faster, slower or does it not not matter?
Is it all just to do with personal preference and feel?
I could certainly do with more distance from my irons, would a lower or higher swing weight help in this?

My current gamers feel quite heavy to swing (not sure of actual swing weight). I'm wondering if I should go lighter swing weight.

I know, I know, should get fit. But I prefer to buy, try, fail, sell, buy again. That's me :)

Thanks in advance.

Like I've always thought/said, all this swing weight nonsense people carry on with is a load off piffle.....

And considering nobody has replied to your post in 2 days maybe everybody is starting to realise it now??

But I doubt it!!

;) ;) :p

I'm with you. I've hit the same iron heads with NS Pro 950's and Modus 130's and hit them just as well with either really. I think overall weight has more effect on how I hit it rather than swing weight.

And to be honest,

I think the extra weight I put on or lose around my girth has an even bigger effect on how I swing it even more than the weight of any club I'm swinging.... ;)

Thanks for those links Dave.

Sounds a bit to me like it's more just a feel and preference thing to fit your own swing type, tempo, speed etc.
Then if you play clubs well at a certain swing weight, try to go for similar in other clubs. Yeah?

Definitely about feel and heft Baz. Shaft weight/flex is probably more important as a starting point, especially in the longer clubs.

I have a quick tempo, fast transition, often abbreviated backswing, and plenty of weight to throw behind the swing, so heavy and hefty works for me. I can use lighter shafts to a point (80/85 graphite is about the limit), as long as the clubs are set up to play hefty. Someone more at the Ernie Els end the swing spectrum would probably be suited better with lighter, less hefty clubs.

Too heavy can cause more early release, but most of us amateurs will release early no matter what anyway!

Swingweight was developed to give an approximation of feel, but it is an approximation only and can be fooled.

I MOI match all my clubs, so they all feel the same to swing for me. MOI matching doesn't get fooled by things like changes in grip weights, shaft variations and balance points, counter balancing etc. So I can set up a club with an S300 and one with a 80 gram HL Graphite shaft, to feel the same to swing (though flight, spin etc will still be noticeable different of course).

Yep, you're not wrong there.
