This is a link to a guy selling head only FT-3 drivers on ebay here in Australia. It's not mine !!!!

The question is this, in his listing he states that the head(s) were removed using a heat gun and shaft extractor, when even at Callaway if you wish to change a shaft they tell you it will be drilled out.

Anyone know what heating does to the integrity of the composite head ?? I would also assume given my previous experience with Callaway, that any warranties are shot. I'm not a prospective buyer, just intrigued.

It does bugger all to the head, but what it is hard to do is extract it without screwing up the paint where the ferrule goes in. You can buy a special hose tho that'll do it, but drilling is far easier :)

It does bugger all to the head one guy I know who attempted to remove a shaft with head on the old or first fusions said the comp part seperated from the metal part.

So from your experiences this happens no more ???

I was the one asking the question as everything I've read on BSG and Golfwrx says that using a heat gun can cause the composite crown to separate from the titanium face. Maybe in the hands of an expert it would be OK but who knows who did the job.

pt73 already has asked how it was removed, I assume if I ask he will poo poo it and say there will be no problem, whether he knows it or not....

I had my old Callaway ERC Hot Driver re-shafted by using heat - low heat at that - and the rubber interface between the composite and the steel/titanium face "bubbled up" a little and didl not look as neat - performance wise it doesnt affect the head but when you are trying to re-sell the driver, there is always some doubts in the potential buyers head that the heat may have damaged the rubber interface.

Last I spoke to Chris, he confirmed that now he basically cuts the shaft and drills the hosel out so no heat is applied - the only bad thing about this is the fact that your pull out shaft goes from a driver length shaft to a 3 wood.

BTW, I am gunning for the 9.5* head - I have a nice Graffalloy Proto to go in it.

I had a close look at the pics of the 9.5* head and I'm not sure if it's the light (or the pic) but it looks like there's some bubbling or irregularity of the face/composite seam about 1-2cm from the hosel. It looks raised unlike the rest of the head.

That's why I asked the seller the question.

If I was going to bid I would ask for another pic of the head from right near the hosel to see if that area is OK.

Might interest you all who are bidding on those driver heads that the seller has previously purchased a set of counterfeit Callaway irons/woods from this auction (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=1519&item=7223790413). They aren't the FT3s, but who is to say they weren't acquired through similar methods?
