View Full Version : Should Golf be an Olympic Sport

This is a topic that comes up once every 4 years funnily enough.

I say NO for a few reasons

We already have the Majors as the pinnacle of our sport, the Olympics would come in 2nd to any of those and thus belittle the value of that Gold Medal, when compared against other Athletics.

The Olympics is supposed to bring out the best, and its usually the best that wins. In Golf how often does the best win, let alone the best 3 finish 1-2-3.

Maybe the Long Drive in Olympic would do :D

No.

There are too many sports there already. Each sport in the Olympics should be there because an Olympic Gold medal in that particular discipline represents the pinnacle of success in that sport. An Olympic medal in tennis is nothing compared to Wimbledon. A medal in golf would be precious little in comparison to a Masters, British Open or other major.

I agree with Matthew wholeheartedly. Who wants to see another professional sport played at the olympics.... :P

P.S. I am thinking about taking up archery. Anyone want to sponsor my charge for the 2008 games???? How hard could it be? I did alright at grade 7 school camp. 8)

No No No....we don't need tennis as an Olympic sport nor do we need tennis. These sports get enough coverage and money and take away from less prominent sports who can't get into the Olympics as it is.
What next..........AFL????????????

Ahhh now that's more like it. I thought it might create some controversy.

I don't mind AFL, I own the game & used to play for the school team

Rugby Union's my game though, although I can't walk properly after the weekend. Combination of playing the hardest game in a long time, and then going all weekend at Splendour In The Grass

This is a placid site. Nice and friendly like. Take your controversy over to that "other" forum.

I'd love to see golf as an Olympic sport, but only for amateurs. The inclusion of tennis has proved that wealthy sportsmen aren't going to bust their guts for a gold medal when they can earn millions playing regular tournaments.

It would also encourage amateurs to hold off turning pro for a tad longer. Gotta be good for their game.

What about Olympic Long Driving, or Mini Golf?

having watched the movie MIRACLE, I don't really believe that professional athletes should be partaking in the olympics...

don't really know how that would work (or if it would work)...but not having "dream teams" would make some of the team events more "exciting"???
