Hi Adam....I'm a shanker....how do I stop it ?
At first I was hitting full irons ok and shanking the little wedge chip shots and half shots.
Now I am concentrating on kinda freezing my hips a lot more with the chips and it seems to have sorted it most of the time...but I am having more shanks with full shots...anything up to a 5 iron.

Can this be framed for posterity?

I'm not the swing coach here, but what are your bad shots if you're not hitting a shank (block, hook, etc)?

Hi Mr Shanker
What I would recommend that you do this check first.

1. put one ball down in the normal position as if you are about to hit.
2. Do your normal set up to the ball. now hit the ball.

Now check if when you swing, if you are dipping the right shoulder down too much when swinging towards the ball. This is a common fault for people to shank the ball.
If you change your axis tilt during the back swing to the downswing (drop the shoulder into the ball) this will cause a shank.
Also make sure that you keep your left eye behind the ball at impact.
Try this

This is a great cure I tried years ago myself

Curing Shanking

No horror in golf is worse than shanking--hitting the
ball off the extreme heel of the club and having it skid
crazily off to the right, sometimes at almost a right
angle. After hitting his first shank a golfer gets
panicky, and in his panic he keeps hitting shank after
shank until his game is wrecked. Just to talk about it
makes the blood run cold.

Many experts contend there is no cure for shanking
except to give the game up for a while. I am inclined to
disagree for the good reason that I have been able to cure
hundreds of cases. Shanking is 90% mental. It is also a
temporary disease. The best method of treating a temporary
disease is a temporary cure.

I use positive methods on the practice tee in beginning
the cure. Instead of telling yourself not to
be conscious of the heel of the blade, I stress that you
should line the ball up at the toe of the blade. After a
couple of trail swings, I start by hitting toe shots, the
opposite of shanks. Even a poorly hit toe shot goes out
there pretty well. Then, after the have hit 50 or so
toe shots, I gradually move the ball to the center of the
blade. Invariably, I started to play good shots with increasing
confidence. my shanking troubles are over.

I feel your pain Rich, I went through something very similar myself awhile back.
Maybe you are swinging from the inside to much and getting trapped?
At the range try hitting balls with a headcover or an empty drink bottle laying along your swing path. This will make your approach to the ball come more from the outside.

Addam is the expert but this is something that has worked for me ;)
