View Full Version : Wanted: Idiot-proof Sand Wedge

After yet another stellar performance with the spade on the weekend, I've decided I need to simplify things a bit.
I'm looking for a sand wedge with approx 12* bounce that will just get it on the green. Not too fussed on condition.
Can trade a Ping Tour S 60* if anyone is interested in a swap.
Thanks

Get a nike toe sweep. Can't fail.

becaben: my suggestion would be either a Ping Eye 2 XG Sandy or the new Cally Phil Mac wedge
Both are extremely forgiving - the Phil Mac wedge has grooves all over the face - meaning you will get traction no matter where you make contact

Don't Cleveland make a sand wedge for just such a situation?

Cleveland Smart Sole.
There was a batch at GCO Enfield a month ago.

Good mentions already, Eye 2's are good, Toe Sweep, Smart Sole and not mentioned (for a bit of bling) the Vokey K grind. PING Glide WS is good too.

Good call on the Vokey. While I don't have one I have tried one a few times. The K grind is virtually cheating out of bunkers. That reminds me, better keep looking for one.

Silly idea, as if that's gonna work.
Buying more stuff is a much better option.

What you want is a sand wedge with no bounce and a wide sole, like 1.5" this is often called a "slider". Very easy to him. Square stance and just hit 2 inches behind. Pops out nice and soft but no spin.
12 degree bounce is not idiot proof.

Might work Ferrins. How does the Zing compare to the Eye 2?

Any specific suggestions MtB? I got one that has grooves in the face and it is excellent, but illegal :(

More idiot-proof. ;)
Highly recommended. I picked up an old Ping Zing SW a few years back for kicks. Great out of the sand, but grooves were too worn to work around the green/rough.
I've just gone back to a Hogan Sure-Out for exclusive use in bunkers. (Double width sole and 6* of bounce, which isn't quite as big as the slider/Alien wedge that Blakey described.)

Useless in tight fairway lies, but like cheating in soft sand.

Ha, that 70deg wedge would be hilariously fun to try :)

Depends what your problem is, if you are getting the club stuck in the sand because you are hitting down on it too much something with a wider sole/more bounce will helps.
To back up the previous replies:
TM ATV // can pick up the old version at a decent price around
MD PM Grind // Concave sole similar to the MD 'U' Grind wedges - Great for sand.
Smart Sole // If you really have no hope, these are finished but you can find them out and about, new model due out soon I believe.
