Thanks again to everyone that offered their thoughts as to which SUV we should be looking at, Kluger is now the target.

No need for 4WD, in the last 13 years we've had the challenger on the sand a handful of times.
So now we need to choose between 2wd or AWD?

Is either one cheaper than the other in rego?
Do AWD chew through the tyres?

What should we be doing, considering the car with never leave the road..

What is the price difference? We went BT50 and there was $8k between 2 and 4...no brainer. Only once did I wish I had 4wd, but it was not worth the 8k.

We're buying second hand, around 3 years old. I'd guess there may be $3-4K difference between 2WD and AWD, but don't quote me.

Rego is usually charged by weight so rego should be the same...
Go AWD as I think they drive better..

My 10 cents buy a diesel Prado

The AWD will be safer on road if its wet, it will get worse fuel economy (driveline drag and heavier).

Just look for the best car in either within your price point - in the end it won't mean squat.

Toyota's solid (boring) build quality will mean the AWD driveline will not have any real impact on scheduled servicing costs.

Lager, I have seen you drive, definetely get the AWD.
In QLD Rego is determined by cylinders. A 6 costs ~$160 pa more than a 4. No, I don't know everything, (close) but I did look that up last week.

Go for the AWD.
They drive much better with less torque steer.
My company demo is the Kluger and I've had both the AWD & FWD.

I recommend carsguide.com.au. Similar to carsales, but you can learn where the vehicles are located immediately.

I'd go 2wd, but I'm a cheapskate and like to be different for the sake of it!

Explain please.

Dealers have targets to hit. At the end of the month they will often discount more than normal to get their targets.

Had one sold from underneath us today, found the perfect one late Saturday afternoon, we were going to commit this arvo after talking to lease company, but missed out by an hour.

Have now decided on what we want at least..

2013 Kluger KX-R 2wd 7 seater. $32k gets us something with no more than 30K on the clock.
The second row of seats changed after this model, away from the captains seats to the 60/40 less comfy ones.

Wife's a bit of a miss daisy and we've tried the off road thing and didn't go much on it, so the 2wd it is.

Righto

So now we've found a private sale beauty online in Adelaide. Really struggling to get my head around what fees we are looking at for rego transfer etc..

Anyone had experience in buying a registered car from interstate of late?
Seems like another $2K on top. Of sale price isn't out of the question.

$3.50 per $100 of purchase price in Qld (for a 6 cylinder), plus rego, less cancelled SA rego residual.

It will be basically the same, wherever you buy it from though.

I'm guessing LL means total including fees etc is more than they want to spend. It's easy to forget all that stuff when buying and just think of the cars price. I usually do, but since I've only bought 2 cars in the last 25 years I'm not surprised I'd forget.

The fees are exactly the same as if you bought a car locally. Transporting it back here is going to cost a bit, the cheapest car carrier is Ceva. $300 from Sydney, $500 from 'Melbourne, $1000 from Perth, dunno Adelaide. If you want to drive it back with no rego, cost about $50 for a temporary rego. Including fuel that is cheaper than a car carrier unless you factor in your time as a cost.

LL, the AWD is not necessarily just for the bush or sand, it is very useful on bitumen in the wet, a safety feature sometimes overlooked.

WOW.......3 and 1/2 months!!

2013 KXR Kluger 7 seat AWD arrived Friday, just in time for a 2K trip to SA.

Could not be happier with it either.. we were after a FWD initially, but we grabbed this one as we were running out of time.. already feel that the AWD is the go.
