View Full Version : Club head repair

On Saturday I found myself on a bare-ish lie under some trees. I pulled my 8-iron & punched the ball out, only to hear & feel the dreaded 'clack' of club-on-buried-rock contact. I now have a nice gouge on the toe of my iron. What's the best way to repair it? I've read some stuff about tapping the burr back in to place with a hammer, and then buffing it back to smooth... does anyone have any experience in this kind of repair?

Tap the bur back, draw file and then rub back. Never going to be the same though.

You can definitely tap with a hammer I've done it before and hit it with a light file then really fine grit sand paper then a buff, turned out alright

8 iron (Taylormade Tour Preferred MCs). I'd chuck a pic up but they're in my locker at the golf club.

Gunna be a tough repair for the fact tthey a chrome plated carbon steel. Any filing will damage the chrome and make a raw spot that'll rust.

leave it as it is, next time you get in the rocky lies, you can use the 8 iron and as you wont be afraid of dingin it up, so you will be more confident with your swing.

you will thank me later.

Who cares?
It is a golf club.
I was a member at a club for 24 years, where if I missed a fairway, my irons would cop a hiding,
A few dings in your bats give them character

Thanks Benno. I'll try to tidy up with hammer & buff, but that will be my backup plan.

A golf club is like a war axe, the notched ones always look way cooler than the brand spanking new ones!

Take it to a Blacksmith, they should be able to hammer it back into some normality as well as anyone.

Copyright the term 'Speed Gouge', before TM releases it on their 2016 Winter 2015 irons.

I think you need to just wait until an 8 iron appears on ebay.com and replace it.

Use it as a paper weight then.

If it is an issue for you Courty, then tap the raised metal with a flat punch and hammer and buff using a dremell with polishing stick and cloth pad. I've done it a few times in the past when I cared.

Yep, there is the odd one still about. There is one listed in Cairns;

Thanks Ray, I'll give it a go on the weekend.I forgot to mention to put some heat on the gouge before tapping it. Just enough heat to give the metal some pliability, but not enough to change the color. Have fun.
