Listed at 289m and Index 17, this drivable hole is no snack. Trees down the right, many cavernous bunkers down the left. The green drops off sharply to the left and back, so hitting the green is a must.

I camped next to the green on the final day of the 2010 Melbourne Masters and watched a lot of big names play this hole. Tiger drove the green and canned a monster putt for eagle, but a lot of others had to scramble just to make par.

Probably wedge, wedge, wedge.

Cavernous, did you say?

Hybrid, sand wedge, sand wedge, sand wedge, ****ing sand wedge, sand wedge, pick up.

I'm under no illusions that I have neither the length or accuracy to hit the green from that distance. Looking at the aerial view, I would probably try a 4 iron to keep it on the fairway, and then hope to hit the green with a wedge for my second and walk off with a solid 2 putt par.

In reality, I may well pull hook my 4 iron into one of the left fairway bunkers, quite possibly the one that is well short so I then leave myself blocked out by the big tree that's just short of the next lot of bunkers. On my second attempt, I'll shank it out of the bunker and end up just off the right side of the fairway with about 145m to the pin. Then I'll proceed to top my 7 iron which will run along the ground for the most part and finish in the right green side bunker. My third attempt in the sand will see me out of the bunker and over and off the back left of the green. Then I'll duff a chip onto the fringe and 3 putt for an 11.

But I won't care because I will have already won my matchplay by this stage

As it sets up for my draw, I will aim driver at the right greenside trap.

I will then flare it 60m right of the fairway and scramble a bogey.

I always take driver, but missed it last time cavernous is apt and its easy to drive through the green with a fricken hard pitch back usually from the side of the 10th green

So in answer considering i will probably be 4 down, driver in the case im 2 up (very remote) 6 iron sw,sw,sw putt, putt, putt. and make a statement doing so!!

Will depend on wind etc. but my base play is to be drawing hybrid to short right and then bump on.

I don't have much in the way of notes for Victoria. Only played it twice.

I'm thinking 4 iron, wedge. I'm still smarting from the ti-tree on the right of 6 (I think.. might be 5... Hole after the hole that was out of play) at Woodlands after trying to drive it.

It's like that ey? Can I put money on that not happening.

(The 5/4 by 15 bit)

Driver might be an option if there is room to hit to the left of the tree and curl it back. Actually that doesn't look like an option.

A sweet draw starting off the right side coming back is the only way you can attack it with driver.. played this hole about 30 times and tried everything.. LoveGolf's approach is actually the way I prefer to play it.. go long into the greenside bunker and play it from there. Vic's bunkers are a treat compared to what I am used to!

I'm thinking 5 iron or short hybrid off the tee, then a half or 3/4 PW. Looks like a hell of a hole if you were contemplating trying to get it right up there.

The play on 1 is to try to get on the front of the green or just short. You cannot miss the green left or long, almost certain bogey or worse. Miss in the rhs green side bunker is ok, but still leaves a difficult recovery. Off the tee hit whatever you need to get over the short lhs fairway bunkers and hope to roll up close to the green. Play for a safe par and hope for a good second shot to sneak a birdie.

You'll feel like a complete dickwad if you are standing on the second tee having made a mess of such a simple first hole.

1.Pull hook a 3w into a bunker between 15 and 11.
2. Knock the next on into another bunker on the left of 15.
3. Clear the green to be down behind the green.
4. Bump a hybrid up the bank, roll it 30ft past up the hill.
5. Sink a 30ft downhill putt.

5/1, jobs done.

mint
6th February 2015, 08:04 PM
Drove it... Made par.. I hate myself

BenM
6th February 2015, 08:55 PM
1. Pull hook 4i into fairway bunker.

2. Push wedge into right hand trap

3. Perfect trap shot but couldn't stop it and roll 15 feet past

4. 2 putt for easy 5/1 and win hole

LarryLong
6th February 2015, 09:22 PM

Another dickwad here, but in my defence I thought I went with the right play - 4 hybrid off the tee should have been a perfect ball to somewhere near the front of the green, but I smashed it out of the middle (by my standards) and it bounced like a super ball and rolled all the way into the left hand bunker. After that it was a game of tennis using the flag as the net. Wipety-wipe.

1. Duck hook hybrid into first bunker on left.
2. Clean pick blind 9i out of trap from 128m and stick it to 3m.
3. Lag to 6 inches
4. Tap-in par! :)

7th February 2015, 10:04 AM
Softy here!!!

15. 5 hybrid off the tee, sand wedge to middle green and easy 2 putt par.

1. 5 hybrid again short left of the green. Texas wedge and 2 for putt par.

matty
9th February 2015, 12:38 PM
Drove to the back of the right bunker, blast out, 2 putt par.

The hole was doubly interesting as me and Mint were dormi in our match. He needed his 2 putt to win but left the first 5ft sort and just missed the next. From memory the 15th was the end of both singles and the match.

Never underestimate a short par 4 at Victoria!

Hybrid to 70m out. Pull a little Wedge flick into the green side bunker and short side myself, Duh! 2 in the bunker trying to be delicate, 2nd one to 5 feet, make the putt, bogey.

oldracer

2 Iron, 9 Iron to front of green, long lag putt then in for par, bit soft I know but I needed anything on the short stuff

9th February 2015, 05:52 PM
5 iron to sand and trees on the right side of the fairway. Had to try and punch one out with a 5 iron to miss some low hanging branches. Came out too hot and left, ended up in the left front green side bunker. Bunker shot out which rolled to the back edge off the green, 2 putts for bogey.
