So, just picked myself up a nice set of Mizuno MX-900's. Decent price and couldn't resist. They do look very nice indeed. Might try to upload a few pics.

To me they look like a SGI iron or even UGI. Quite thick top line (especially the longer irons) and the 3 & 4 are basically hybrid irons.Mid irons are chunky, short irons a bit thinner and smaller.

But on the Maltby charts they only come up as Conventional 503 rating. If that is near the mark they would turn out to be the hardest iron I've ever tried to hit! I know those ratings aren't the be-all and end-all, but surely MX-900's are SGI at least?

Anyone else out there playing them, or played them previously? Are they as nice and forgiving as I hope they will be?

Hope I can hit them, or they will be up for sale again shortly :)
Actually, no. They look too nice. Pics up in a minute.

Don't worry about the overall rating Maltby gives.

Based on the numbers, they will launch easy, have decent size sweetspot, but won't be as forgiving on strikes towards the toe as others.

You have bought them, so forget the numbers and let some swings tell you what you need to know.

Thanks for that benno. I can't make head nor tail of the maltby ratings except the overall figure.
Love someone to tell me what the different numbers mean.

And yeah, I'll definitely be giving them a good work-out. Hope they go well for me.

Thanks for that benno :)

It seems the MX900's do have a high MOI so probably nice and forgiving.

I'm a sweeper not a divot-taker, and I tend to hit a high ball. I suppose if I want a set that gives a lower flight, then higher Vert Cog is what I should look for? (assuming I go by these numbers).

Theoretically, yes.

Though a high flight with a sweep might be a swing thing, not an equipment thing. (That's only a hunch on my part)

What's the characteristics of your current irons according to mpf?

The two best sets of irons I have hit are TM Burners and Cobra AMP's. Still got the AMP's. Sold the Burners and regret it.

Burner VCog 0.94 MOI 15.4
Cobra VCog 0.81 MOI 13.88

So both sets are pretty high in the area you mentioned. Sounds plausible that these figures fit me ok.
I also enjoyed playing Cally X20's (0.76 & 12.49) but did hit them very high as well. Nice and straight though.

btw - I see there is a Basic VCog, then VCog adjust giving Actual VCog. Which do you go by?

I played with a set for four or five years. Lovely forged iron feel to the short irons and I found the four iron as easy to hit as any hybrid. But recently switched to an old mans graphite shaft in the jpx-EZ irons. Won't ever part with the MX 900's though...

There is a set of 3-pw with graphite regs for $290 on Gimptree Brisbane.
