I haven't had much worthy of posting about in here for quite a while. My swing has deserted me, and my handicap is heading towards anchor with a bullet. At least a part of today's round should be highlighted, though. I played in the Pink Tee Challenge (Breast Cancer fundraiser) at Paradise Palms today. It was an individual stableford round played off the ladies tees.

As it was a shotgun start we headed out to the shortish par 4 15th to begin the round. I drove it to the front edge of the green, chipped past the hole (downhill), then made the 4m putt back up the hill for a birdie.

16 is the shortest par 3 on the course, playing at around 105m today. I hit my 52 and got a fortuitous bounce to finish about 2m under the hole, then made the putt for another birdie.

I pulled driver left on the par 4 17th to a gap in between some trees. From a downhill lie I got my gap wedge over the trees and onto the fringe 3m from the cup, then knocked it in for a ferret birdie.

The 18th is a dogleg par 5 around a massive hill and then down to an unsighted green perched next to a lake. I tried to smack one over the top of the hill but shut the face and pulled it left. It still finished on the fairway and I had around 160m to the flag (which I could only just see the top of). I didn't quite catch my 6 iron but it still had enough on it to reach the fringe at the front of the green, narrowly carrying the creek just short. My ferret eagle attempt from around 12m died about 6 inches short and right of the hole, but I tapped in for my 4th consecutive birdie.

Skipping the 1st (par), I teed up driver on the 2nd and blocked it across onto the 3rd fairway about 80m from the pin. Another deft gap wedge and I had another uphill putt from about 3m which I promptly canned for my 5th birdie in 6 holes.
2 more solid pars followed so I found myself at -5 almost halfway through the round, a place I've never been before. Of course, that's when the bad swing habits resurfaced and I started the not-so-slow, painful descent back to black numbers. Luckily I had enough of a headstart by then that I managed to finish with 76 for 41pts and the win in the Mens division.

34 points today ( 16/18 ) - been working on the putting and everything seemed under control (only 1 three-putt on the front 9) but went kablooyee on the 12th - par 3 tee shot to 25 feet, first putt 12 feet past, second putt 8 feet past, third putt 3 feet past, fourth putt next to the golf cart

Back under control but lipped out makeable putts for par on 16 and 17 - regulation par on the 18th to finish (probably only the second time I've done that in the 12 months I've been a member of GC - long uphill par 4)

Thanks guys. Despite teeing up from the ladies, Paradise Palms is an unforgiving course and the generally poor scoring by the rest of the field illustrated that. The real story behind my score was the putting.

Nice work Courty, 5 birds is pretty special scoring.

I didn't quite manage 5 birdies, but I did end up with the same gross score of 76 for 43 (21/22) points today at Reddie Bay. I was only OK off the tee, but my irons were really in the slot today, and I managed to hit 50% GIR and I made 4 good up and downs.

Stats;

8/14 GIR
9/18 GIR
29 putts
4 U & Ds incl a SS

2 birds
11 pars
4 bogies
1 dbl

T'was enough to win A grade by 4 shots. HCP slashed by 0.8 to 9.9. Lowest for 2014 so far.

Gees Courty, you should be kicking yourself to have blown an opportunity to post in the Cracked The Game thread, and then start another blowup about whether it counts from the red tees.

As for me, back to the mundane reality of Ballina on greens running about 5 on the stimp after three blissful days on SA greens last weekend.

I was trying a different swing thought today, which was partly successful. My 34 points wasn't really due to dodgy swinging, but bad putting. Anything over about 20 feet I kept leaving 5 feet short, which irritated me greatly. Get em to the hole, I kept saying, but I couldn't make myself smash the ball hard enough. What was worse was that one of my playing partners was knocking in everything under 25 feet.

Some quality rounds there. Nice work dunteachin and cantchip.

Yesterday was my first comp round since my 43pts on Wednesday. Started well and it really felt like a continuation of Wednesday. Even par through the 1st seven, but managed to dribble a couple of lazy bogeys to finish the nine with 21 points, the same as Wednesday's score.

I started well on the back nine, with a solid tap in par on 10. Dribbled a shot on 11 from the middle of the fairway, but back on form with a tap in par on the 12th. 28 points to here, and we had already closed out the 4ball match at this stage. Then the wheels fell off! pulled my tee shot on 13, got a ricochet back into the water. Lipped out the bogey put, for a double. Then doubled 14 and 15, again with lipouts for the bogey putt. Flew the green by 30m on 16 and almost made the up and down, again another lipout! Pulled drive on 17 lead to another double! Good drive and 2nd shot on the 18 and I am looking at a little flick wedge to the green. Managed to catch it a groove thin and sent it oob over the back for a double bogey finish (bogey putt, you guessed it lipped out!)! Ended up with 33 points (21/12). This game can really bring you back to earth with a thud!

Nice shooting mate!

Played Darwin GC today. First time with my daily handicap at 14, unusual heading out knowing you HAVE to make 4 pars!

Started well getting on the 1st in reg, then 3 putted - the greens were furry, bumpy and sandy. Was super hard to make putts today, probably the worst conditioned, inconsistent greens I have played. Bunkers were also awful - we have hit wet season.

Driving was ok, iron play ok, short game just ok. Nothing really great to write about. One wipe on the front on the index 18 par 3 5th. Hit it on to the bunker (concrete), airmailed the green getting out, then missed the 1ft bogey putt.

Par today , plus 2 on front nine, was still plus 2 with three to go... finished even. Took nearly 45 minutes to play the last 3 holes, group in front were ridiculously slow. 4 hours overall for par is not on, considering such a small field today.

Went into the final round of club champs thinking I would be ok in gross for B grade with 86 86 85. Surprised to find out I was leading, so seeded for the final Sunday. Luckily, my good mate Monsta was also seeded, so we caught up for beers before the round and were feeling good...

Started par/bogey to maintain my lead, and thought all was good. Player 4 went 6 9 9 to be out of it. Other bloke was 4 back and no concern... Hooked my tee shot on 3 back into the wind 50m left of target and took a solid triple.

Go to the 9th and Monsta had 4 out of the required 5 on me, with dickhead a couple more back. All was good.

Until...

10th - Benno 7. Monsta 9. Monstas 9 was very unlucky. First was down the left so he hit a provisional. Could not find it, and the provisional was in the drink. BANG. 9. I hit my drive 15 m just past the ladies and played like a spaz for the rest of the hole.
11th - Benno shank into piss, triple 6. Monsta 4 OD went par par and was in the game again.
12th - I hit magic wedge to 8 foot above the hole, lip out putt. OD jags a 30 footer for a 5 to have a decent lead..
13 - I make a rubbish 9 - water, crap, crap crap, crap etc.
Stood on 14 5 behind. It was all over for me, Monsta still just in the game.
Went past the clubhouse. 2 Dr Carltons please.
Went par par bog par bog.
OD found out he was leading and melted with double single triple dougle triple double. DONE.
Not realising at the time, Monsta had an unplayable on 17 and took double.
I rolled in a bomb on 18 for par. Monsta made 5 for a bogey and runner up.

Seriously, that was one day of all emotions, but I am glad I got to share it with Kev. We all had our chances....

Congratulations to Jerry Springer who had 75/64 today to win the A grade nett by 13!!!!!!

Congrats Benno and Jerry!

Played Ambrose Saturday and started hot with -3 through 3 and then could only manage pars on the next 2 easiest holes on the course before a couple more birds home turned at 31 , another 5 birds and a bogey on the front saw us finish with 63 / 59.5 nett for no prizes but I found some form after remembering something from a lesson I had when I first started playing nearly.

Headed to the range before Sunday to confirm what I thought and ended up shooting 79/70 or 38 points on the Sunday after being 6 over through 4 because I flew the first couple of greens ( the tip was helping my ball flight into the wind massively which was a major issue for me). New driver went like the clappers on Sunday too.

Pretty excited to hit the range a few times this week and make sure I keep that swing thought/feeling.

7/11 effective tee shots, 8/18 effective approaches, 2/9 up and down successes, 1/1 sand saves, 33 putts.
1 birdie, 8 pars, 8 bogeys, 1 others.
Scoring: BPBBXPBBB PPPXXPPbP
Score (http://www.ozgolf.net/andyp/Scorecard/rounds/20141130-p158.html): 43-33-76 (+9) par -5/+1/-4 (Par 35-32-67)

I had a little bit more time off from playing (my first round since the Qld OZgolf Champs), not that it is easy with junior cricket or running on weekend mornings. I lowered my expectations and just went out to try and hit some good shots and hopefully score under 80. I had a scrappy start, although it didn't feel like I was playing that bad (it was the short game holding me back). By the time I got to the 15th tee I had a poor score of 7-, with some tough holes to come. A quick calculation in my head told me that I needed 2 over in the last 4 holes to break 80, which gave me something to aim for. I finished the last four in 1 under.

I'm happy with that, especially since it felt like the swing was okay, but only a little off target at times.

Next round: Medal of medals on Saturday and this is the first time I have ever played one of these.
