View Full Version : Issue Site hangs from time to time

Daves

Anyone else been experiencing this in recent months? Site seems to go byes byes at times during the day. If you try to post or refresh , my browsers just spin the "wheel" so to speak. Sometimes it goes for a quite a while and you get server timeout responses etc.

I don't think it is related, but I also have probems with typing in message reply/post box. All cursors disappear, and there seems to be some java issues at times as well?

I have definitely experienced slowdowns, but I always blamed it on potential issues with the work network.

Jarro
9th September 2014, 01:58 PM
I haven't had any issues with it lately ??

I've been having some issues today too, but I figured it was the work network as well as I was having issues on other sites at the same time (I really should be working anyway)

I've experienced this at least once a day.

A few times today.

Do you think it could be the Pro Shop? Should we shut it down?

I'll have a look and contact the server host, if needed.

Guys, when this happens could you please post the time it happens and the link that you were going to in here. The hosts always ask for specifics. Thanks.

It would be when the backups r being done on the host servers.

AndyP

Any updates?

Any updates?

Nothing dramatic, the odd sluggishness, but nothing of any consequence since my OP.

Daves

The site was cycling for a few minutes just now.

AndyP
24th September 2014, 07:15 PM
Thanks Dave. I have submitted a ticket for this now, so we'll see what the hosts have to say.

Some timeouts over the past 15 mins or so...

Daves
24th September 2014, 08:42 PM
I am having issues again now (last 10 minutes or so). I restarted my Browser, but that didn't make any improvement.

Daves
24th September 2014, 08:43 PM
And just as quickly back, and at full speed.

Steve57
25th September 2014, 04:54 AM
I had the same problem last night at the same time as Daves and KJ.

AndyP
25th September 2014, 06:11 AM
Thanks gents. I've added that instance to the support ticket.

AndyP
26th September 2014, 10:25 AM
The host suggests that it is the Baidu spiders causing the slowdown. I'm sure that I have blocked them before, but maybe they have changed something to have another crack. I'll look into it.

AndyP
30th September 2014, 07:41 PM
I still think I have blocked them before, but I think the file that was edited to do that got overwritten.

I have re-editted the file, so I hope this stops those annoying slowdowns. Please let me know if it happens again. Thanks.

Just had a minor hang for a few minutes, 14.25 to 14.28.

Daves

Which was a precursor to a longer hang, 14.31 to 14.37 so far....

AndyP

Big time struggling. I can't see any Baidu spiders online, just Google, Bing and Yahoo.

I think I was experiencing the small hang up....

AndyP
7th October 2014, 03:39 PM
There are 66 "guests" online at the moment. The server hosts said that there were a lot of hits through Tapatalk when the slow down occurred on the 5th, so I'll turn Tapatalk guest access off and see what affect it has.

AndyP

The site was very slow this morning, has just come good. Thanks Dave. I have emailed the hosts to see if they can trace the cause.

AndyP
28th November 2014, 07:42 PM
When reviewing this time I noticed a large amount of requests to the register.php script, all using HTTP/1.0. The current standard in any browser from the past decade or so is HTTP/1.1, and we primarily view 1.0 with malicious activity (e.g., brute forcing, spamming, etc). I believe this is what caused your site to slow down.
In the space of 10 minutes, one of the IP addresses had a crack 105 times. As a result, we will get the 3 IP addresses responsible for most of this blocked.

Thanks for reporting, Dave. I'm sure it will happen again, so it would be appreciated if those instances are reported also.

Yeah I tried to get on a few times (phone and PC without luck). Think I was trying mid-morning WA time

AndyP
30th November 2014, 05:28 PM
Yeah, I think there was some issue, but I don't know what exactly.

I restarted the server (I can do that from my iPhone, which is pretty cool), and it seemed to kick back into gear again. If you see an outage like that, post a message up on the Facebook page (or check it, as I may have posted that I already know about it), as that should give me a notification or send an email to admin @ ozgolf.net. It is no guarantee that I can respond quickly, but I would look into it as soon as I could.

It is a shame about affecting the punters club. I hope they were losing bets that were going to be put on (I haven't checked that thread yet).

There were a couple of "outages" during the evening. I did notice a lot of spiders working the site when I had a look at the front page.

AndyP
7th December 2014, 08:01 AM
How many is a lot for the spiders, Dave? Have you noticed that is was more at other times, or have you only looked when the site is slow?

Daves
7th December 2014, 08:30 AM
I look at the who is online page occasionally. Seemed to be a lot more spiders than usual, perhap a dozen or more and multiples of each.

AndyP
7th December 2014, 08:39 AM
There's 25 known spiders right now.

AndyP

The bottom of the front forum page gives a summary of who is online, including spiders. It also lists the number of guests, which could be unknown spiders or these IP addresses that "attack" the site.

Not really that weird. Telstra had a routing issue that knocked out all connections to USA, obviously Ozgolf is hosted in the US. Pretty sure it was still out even until very late Wed night. I think the problem was with service providers at the other end of Telstras routing/peering etc not Telstras own gear. Though you would think that a company as big as Telstra would have alternate routes already in place.

AndyP
11th February 2016, 08:03 PM

It only came back because I re-started the virtual server. If there are issues, please contact me; if I don't know, I can't do anything, although it is ****ing ridiculous that I have to do a restart.

I'm once again waiting for an answer from the host in regards to this on-going issue.

BenM
28th March 2016, 06:04 PM
Don't know why it never clicked that you had a VPS. That being the case, it doesn't sound like a networking issue - more that the forum software is causing the web server to hang - whether it be because the CPU/RAM is maxed out, or something else.

Next time it happens it might be worth doing a bit of quick troubleshooting; if you have shell access you could run top and see whether something is obviously maxed. If it is, the next thing is figuring out what causes it... that could be easier said than done. But if it's just apache that's hung (for example) you may be able to set a cron job to just restart that early in the morning once a week or something.

Anyway sorry I didn't contact you - I figured you would know about it eventually and I was out playing golf most of the arvo anyway!
