I have completely lost it. Help!!!

I used to be very solid with an 8 iron around the greens, bump and run was my go to shot, often resulting in tap-in. Now I am not even able to get this right and am resorting to putting from silly spots. My wedge play from around the greens is crap, too hard, too soft, fat, thin...I just have no idea what I am doing. Every shot I hit within 30m of the green is terrible, often resulting in bogey or worse. I am scoring bogey from bogey after hitting to <100m middle of fairway on par 4's pretty much all the time.

I am at a complete loss. All I think about is 'I hope I don't embarrass myself' when I chip/lob/bump-n-run. It is the main reason I cannot score ATM.

Anyone got some good tips or articles? Willing to try anything.

TIA,
-PJ

Hi PJ,

I recently downloaded the Monte Scheinblum Short Game Video and found it very good;

I went through the same thing mate and I found I simply wasn't committing the the shot properly as I was too busy fretting over the what ifs.... what if I knife this, what if I chunk that etc.... spend some time hitting chips and pitches to no target in particular and just commit to the stroke. Then work in target practice once you feel more comfortable.

You will find this is pretty much all in your head as it is stemming from all the negative thoughts you have about the shot. If you are standing over the ball thinking "I hope I don't embarrass myself" nothing positive is going to come out of that.

I have seen you hit good shots so I know you can do it, now you just have to believe that yourself.

Commitment 100% to the shot. Pick out a landing spot & definitely don't think about blading it across the green!

Save for me - but I just went up to the practise green and spent 20 minutes chipping, just working on contact.

The first 50% were putrid, but I holed 4 of my last 10. Chances of that holding up for the weekend? 0.

Very hard to give a fix ithout seeing your faults. Chipping is 2nd easiest swing in the game. Getting it close to the hole is another matter.

Sounds like you have the chyips. Bogle says welcome aboard.
Your not thinking of broomstick and belly chippers I hope?

Seriously, lots and lots of practice working on not letting the club head get in front of the hands.
Was looking at counter balance putter stuff on the web this morning and came across this
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=7R2qITAOpDM. You have to watch a fair bit before he mentions wedges and chipping. I found it quite interesting and has got my interested in heading down this path. I've just added another cost to getting my new wedges.

Two things I do, 3 or 4 practice swings and make sure my weight is predominantly on the left side.

Only swing thought then is "hit down for height".

as a bandaid if i get yippy i find i can do baby pitches (letting the clubhead release, getting body around) for like 30m shots.

Wouldn't want to try it on a 10m or less though.

L4G you're playing off 4.2, you can't be that bad...what technique are you using for chipping?

Most chipping yips come from doubt or fear of hitting a bad chip.
say you are a great chipper and yoy are going to chip it close. Dont think about hitting it fat or thin.
Positive thinking helps.
if you havnt read bob rotellas books get on them. They are great.

Bloody hell. More Rotella kool aid.

I'd argue that most chipping yips come from a history of crap chipping.

Put the book down and hit 1000 chips to a flag 30m away.

Say you are a great chipper when you are a great chipper.

All shit chips (yips) come from a poor technique. So for first time ever I sort of agree above wih 3pp. Get a short game lesson btw from a respectable pro before practicing a poor technique!

I went thru years of chipping it bad and almost got to the point I'm sure I had the yips. I was terrible inside 100m and particularly inside 30m especially if I have to carry a bunker or water or any obstacle. Now my short game is my strength of my game and have rounds were I've only hit 4 or 5 greens and shot or 4 over.

I went from bandaid solution to band aid solutions which had various levels of success and brief periods of times but the problem always comes back.

I got a few lessons from Virge and this has give me a good foundation to work on ans he also gave me a system.

I've developed the following keys keys to my short game.

1. Keep the club head outside your hands
2. Use the bounce
3. Control the distance with the length of your swing.
4. Use the lowest loft u can to play the shot. ie don't use 58 when u can play the shot with a 54 or 50.
5. Get matching wedges
