Maybe the first year should be super simple so it happens, and maybe we can plan the following year over beers after.
I see the main hurdles being where and when. I also see multiple weekends being too hard.
Perhaps we pick a Sunday in 2 or 3 months time so we can publicize it on the forum then book some time slots and show up for an 18 hole comp.
I know I've read lady bay gc mentioned, but people also come from yorkes so where do we play?

Surely they would jump at the chance to hold such a prestigious event?

And hopefully discount their green fees a bit in recognition :)

Seriously tho, what do we need to do to make something happen?

Pick a date and see who is available - what about weekend of Sept 13th/14th?

Then determine a budget? And see what courses are available?

Hope this gets off the ground and there is a reasonable turn out. All the best with those putting in the effort to make it happen.

Having said that I'll be a no show for any thing all of October and first 2 weeks of November, Club Champs. Just putting it out there, not expecting anything to change. You'll never find dates that suit everyone.

Im thinking a handicap event will be more enjoyable for the majority of participants, but what do you do with people with no handicaps?
Perhaps they could bring their last 4 or 5 rounds (signed cards) and we could take an average.

There are various websites that would calculate a handicap if you enter your rounds on them. Having them signed is more difficult I guess.

Qualifying rounds, aka smaller, earlier meet ups could be a way?

Or just trusting people to do the right thing and not cheat? :)

To get the ball rolling for S.A's first Champs, one day is a good start. As has been mentioned numbers for S.A games have started high and ended up as bugger all when it comes game day.
One day however is long way to go for any interstate participation so be prepared we may not get many or anyone from interstate (clash with W.A doesn't help either). It's up to all us S.A forum members to make the first attempt successful with a decent turn out then we can aim a bit higher/longer for the next one.

You would never get a weekend comp unless you played at a public course on the Saturday. An option would be the resort style courses like Tanunda pines, Wirrina, Mccracken or links lady bay. I'm a big fan of Mccracken and lady bay.
Mccracken do scoopons or similar from time to time

A weekend is do-able, Tanunda/Barossa, McCracken/Victor, (or Goolwa, Mt Compass), Wirrina/Lady Bay if need be - hate that place! Could always make a weekend of it and go Riverland?

Depending on how things go in November the above are in the mix for 2015!

McCracken/Mt Compass would be a good double on the South side.
Ease into the 2 days with the easy one McCracken, than savage everyone with the much harder and punishing Mt Compass.

On the North side any two of Barossa Valley, Tununda and Gawler would work well.

There's nothing in the middle that's worthy or relatively easy to get on.
Mt Barker, average (I personally don't rate it).
Stirling (Mt Lofty) would welcome visitors I think, pretty but not worthy.
Oak Bank, forget it.
Highercombe, forget it.

S.A is very lean for quality courses with relatively open access.

The Saturday is Medal of Medals day at Fleurieu (Mt Compass) we could probably get on from about 10 onwards. The Sunday shouldn't be a problem any time.

By the way I have already qualified for Medal of Medal day but not to worried about missing it for the inaugural S.A. OZ Golf Champs.

6 par 3's for start.
+ Small greens with spongy Kikuyu surrounds makes for a day of crappy fickle bounces (one pops straight up or backwards and another springs off running)

I don't think he knows we exist any more :grin:Hey, I never forget where I came from :D

But seriously, I could look at Kooey/RA, but well tbh, I'd rather play at a course I only play once in a blue moon. My preference would be (not in any particular order):

Sandy Creek
Wirrina (used to be a member and know guy in the pro shop well enough to get easily something organised for a larger group)
Links Lady Bay (love the course, wish I played it more!)
Fleurieu
Victor Harbor
McCracken
South Lakes (Goolwa)
Barossa Valley (interesting course, but perhaps a bit far away for most?)
Glenelg

Riverland courses (Berri, Barmera, Loxton, Waikerie) I'd be happy to play as well, but obviously hard for others distance wise.

One course I rarely find mentioned anywhere is Mount Pleasant. I reckon it's a great little country course. It's a full 18 hole track with some really interesting/challenging holes (even shooting over a large water hazard) and will definitely be doable on a saturday I'd say. Not much to play it either.

My not playing list (already play them too much, or not interesting enough for a golf day, or mud tracks in winter):

Ozzie
Highercoombe
Echunga
Any of the 9 holers like Oakbank, Penfield, Regency.
North Adelaide
Two Wells (not very welcoming when I wanted to visit/play there one saturday)
Belair
The Pat
West Lakes (was a member there last year so no real desire to play it again any time soon)
Tanunda Pines (not treated so well there as a visitor last time)

Hey Daggs, had a BBQ brekkie with Flavzz this morning to watch the end of the US Open - pretty sure he'll be O/S when this is scheduled. Hamo has a kid on the way, dunno if he's still playing.

Love all the I'll play here / but not here etc :) I'll show up anywhere as long as the 19th has cold beer!

My mate Jamie works at West Lakes, I'm sure he could help out. He's got lots of experience with corporate days and pro-ams etc, I'm sure he'd be able to help out if needed. Plenty of time, so I can make a few calls if required.

But in all seriousness I definitely think money up front, just one entry fee, is the go this time. And if nadg is the one holding the money then we need some security details from him!

Here's the latest venue info - RA:

Marcel has gotten back to me regarding costs, (thanks for that), and this could come down to how many RA members participate due to RA's guest policies.

At best it looks like the cost could be $100 per head, and that amount also includes a bit for the prize pool, BUTas I said, this is dependent on players v RA members ........... !?

Basically an RA member can have seven guests, any more than that and the cost sky-rockets to $170 a game; so doing some maths 2 RA members playing The Champs can sign in 14 guests, a total of 16 players. Along with Marcel I do know of one other RA Ozgolf member, (though he has been very quiet of late, babies do that!), and Marcel may be able to get another RA member on board to help out guest wise.

One other thing, we'd probably need play 1pm onwards, which is fine BUT the clubhouse closes at 6pm ........................... not long after we'd be finishing our rounds meaning no 19th hole to catch up/chatter/prize giving etc.

Let me know your views on this ASAP please so that things can start happening, i.e. going with RA OR sorting a different venue!?

Cheers guys, fire away.

Is there another watering hole we could use as the 19th?

It would be nice to play RA but if it doesn't work with champs numbers maybe we could just do an OzGolf day there and when the places are filled, hard cheese?

The cost doesn't scare me off personally. It's not a course I'll get to play often so I can justify it as a special occasion...

Sounds good to me, the Seaton hotel is just down the road if we finished late.

If it's a late start, a meal at the hotel down the road might work out well

I'm fine with the cost for RA. Would certainly sort out who was serious about committing to the day.

It would be a shame to not have time to socialise, met fellow forum members, have a presentation and talk crap about those memorable shots over a few drinks and something to eat. If we have to travel to another place after the round I think a fair portion would just go home and that defeats the purpose of the Champs.
The Links Hotel is real close but is a little bit daggy if you ask me and I've been there very recently.

Like Coalesce said, RA may be better off an Ozgolf day with first in best dressed as the 7 guests of Marcel.

Not necessarily so! Was going to work out the total cost, green fees+ prize pool then divide it by the number of players so ALL contributed the same amount :-)

Going by the replies so far though maybe it would be better just to have an Ozgolf SA day at RA and start organizing The Champs elsewhere - looking in to it ............................ hmmmmm.

RA would make a great spot to hold a SA Champs.

Given the inability to organize a regular Ozgolf day with more than an handful attending, perhaps we need an event at the best course in SA to attract a good number of people.

Bit of a long shot I know, but I wonder if RA would be against the idea of dragging along our own BBQ and esky and setting up out near the practice fairway?

Personally, as Marcel has now managed to shanghai another RA member to take part, I reckon 14 'guests' should be enough, so on that basis I have voted, (in the poll I have added to this thread at the top of page), for the event to take part at RA. After-golf proceedings we can/will look in to for alternatives.

Have set the poll to run for 30 days, so mid July/August time I will be after money :-)

A silly question from a newbie to golf travel. After you get there, how do you get around? Rentacar, taxi or something else.

If a Kooyonga game is on the schedule, I could talk myself into this, particularly if I could justify making a proper holiday of it and staying for more than a few days. As interstate visitors, we could probably get on at the other top courses if we wanted to.

I can vouch for the quality of Royal Adelaide as a golf course, almost as good as the quality of Marcel as a host. I also played Links Lady Bay when I visited. It is a very good course.

Somewhere like Fleurieu/McCracken you can normally get on quite easily on a Saturday arvo.

Fire up the navara?

I think it is still smoldering!

Got 4 days in Bali for golf very close to this, so might hit this first, then head straight to Bali. Bit of wheeling and dealing to get that OK'd at work, so see what happens.

Ok If it is Fleurieu.

Coalesce has already put his hand up to taxi who he can down there. I think I will be playing that morning in Medal of Medals won Dec Medal I think that counts in this year. Will check up on that. If I am not I will taxi down there as well. If I am playing in the morning I will be able to taxi back in the arvo to Adelaide.

Anyway I am sure we will work something out.

Put me in pen, guys. I've decided to renew my acquaintance with Marcel and Royal Adelaide, and see what else happens.

My plan is to spend four or five days in Adelaide and make a bit of a holiday of it. So Saturday at Fleurieu is a definite if it happens, and if someone is free on Friday or Monday I'll do that one as well.

I intend to hire a car for the days I'm there, so I'll drive some other visitors around if they are staying in the same part of town.

At this point in time Benno-r no actual tee times are booked, but I believe a stipulation of playing RA on the Sunday is that we tee off around 1pm+!? Marcel is currently swanning around Europe until mid August so unable to give you any more info - sorry.

Working out costs :)

nadg63
6th August 2014, 08:44 PM
OK, have been busy doing the maths and it works out to be $100 entry fee per player to take part in the SA Ozgolf Champs at Royal Adelaide.

This figure covers green fees and a percentage that goes to a prize pool - though what that will entail I've not settled on yet!? (trophies, balls, wine, cash .................. who knows; waiting on feedback from other State round organizers to suss what they do) Also the prize pool amount is going to vary depending on how many participants there are.

Now payment:-

Those that are listed to take part, PM me, I will send you account details, (based in Nigeria .................... ;) ), then payment can be transferred to that. As we are now in to August, entry fees to be paid by the end of September to guarantee your place. If you're listed at the top of the page as an entrant your spot will be 'held' until then, come October 1st though, if you've not paid and someone else wants to play they can claim your place!

About to PM everyone listed as taking part so there'll be no excuse for not having seen this notice :)

PS: Still TWO spots up for grabs!

I'm a definite, but I'll wait until Marcel returns and tee times and dates are confirmed.

I am thinking that I'll probably arrive Thursday and depart Tuesday, playing a total of three days of golf, and having one day of sightseeing, but I'm not sure whether my extra golf day will be Friday or Monday. There is still plenty of time before I make that decision.
