View Full Version : Great Irons & Woods Pre 1990. Those sticks you liked or had

Jack's pictures of a great looking set of Cobra Mild Steel Blades got me thinking of some of the great sets of sticks I've had over the years.

There are plenty of threads on crap clubs we've had/used.
Thought it would be good to talk about some of the good ones we've had the pleasure of playing or those ones that some one else had in the club that you wanted yourself but were never able to get. Post pics of the models in question if you have them or can find them.

For me it's:
No.1_Cobra Tourmodel II's.
Got down to 12 playing a set of PGF Slammers (shovels) in my Junior years and went from 12 to into single figures playing my old man's Prosimmon Hallmarks when he was recovering from a knee injury. A couple of good golfers in the club had Tourmodel II's and I just loved the look of these blades and it was time to up grade from the shovels. They were no longer available new so I bought the replacement model TLC Grind (see worst stick thread). I tried hard to like the TLC Grinds but within 2 months I was regretting buying them and was on the hunt for some second hand Tourmodel II's. Got lucky after about 6 months when someone traded a set at the only Pro Shop in the area for some Spalding Tour Editions. Word got back to me that a set had been traded and a good deal was struck with the Pro as he knew I was unhappy with the TLC Grinds. Played a heap of good golf with these for a couple of years before upgrading to something else.

No.2 Golden Ram Tour Grind Vib. Match
Was happy with the Cobra Tourmodel II's but these always caught my eye sitting in the rack every time I went up to Renmark for a hit. All shiny and new and a slightly smaller head than the Cobras the voice in the back of my head keep whispering "you have to have these". Finally succumb to the inner voice. Played a heap of good golf with these for a couple of years too before the cavity back craze really took off with the Tommy Armour 845's and I followed like a sheep.
3040830409

No.3 Prosimmon Hallmark
My old man had a set of these for 2 months before getting a knee injury playing indoor cricket in the Golf Club Team. I played these for about 3 months while he was on the side lines and went from 12 to single figures while waiting for my TLC Grinds to arrive. This was my first time using blades and hit them quite well. I didn't mid the look and loved the feel.
I can't find any pics of these.

Hatch, the clubs from that era were really good. I had a set of Prosimmon Staffs that I played my best golf with. Tiny little heads but great ball flight and control.

For anyone after a set of Cobra Mild Steels, have a serious look at these:

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/wauchope/golf/cobra-true-temper-dynamic-gold-r300-made-in-usa-clubs/1046706219

Full set 1-SW and they appear to be in really good nick. The price of $300 is completely unrealistic, but if you could get them for $150 then its a decent deal. They are very hard to find especially in a full set. There appears to be a couple of persimmon woods as well.

Was it the Macgregor tourney blade.. The wider one...

That was my favourite of the time.

Maxlfi DP 30. Maybe a little later than the vintage you guys are talking, but sweet none the less!

Which one Virge? The Muirfield 20th was the longer blade model that came out in 86 after Jack won the Masters with them. All the other Macgregor musclebaks are essentially the same club.

Agreed, a favourite. I still play with a guy who uses them (and flushes them). He loves them. Allenby used them as an amateur when he finished 2nd in the 1990 Aust Open at RM.

Very true - the one i remember had a diamond shape muscleback that was very subtle in the head. Trying to find one in google images.

Too many other versions of it.

I used to think the Cobra mild steels were the best looking clubs ever. Now to me they look like junkyard scrap metal.

The only pre 1990 sticks I've ever owned were PGF Status blades and Prosimmon DRK III's. I reckon the PGF's might even still be floating around at the olds... Might.

There were a few versions of the Muirfield, the 20th was the largest. I prefered the standard Muirfield, nice compact blade with the diamond stamps, but they were all good.

I used the 1 iron from the 845 set for a few years. The most offset club I've ever seen. Great fairway finder though.

I've gone back to putting with this 1979 model Ping Anser with the slot in the bottom. Still the benchmark for the style.

Macgregor made some great blades had a set of colokrom a thin top line. Copper faced! 30492

Got a set of Brosnan Tour Classics must have been crap as they gave them to me.
Then moved onto the Ping eye 2 bandwagon that lasted years!
Had a Hogan speed slot driver. A beast of a club with a ping 3 wood.
Agree with all of the above some great sticks around!

845s were awesome sticks.

Jack. That Anser is a thing of beauty. I still have the Redwood that you were kind enough to move on along with another that I bought and had re-milled and re finished. Just love it.

The sound that the slot on yours makes is awesome as well. Rarely, if ever replicated.

Had a set of the Muirfield 20th they were OK for me then, i found eye2's they stayed with me for the next 10 years

Decent sets i had from the period

FG17's - the loft went out on these real quick, complete with the JP wedges all really nice
Maxfli Australian Blades- the ones with the gold script writing loved the block letter ones like Terry Gales but they were Japanese only
Hallmarks- longer in the blade than anything else i really liked them, every one had a set
Sounder SBIV - bought these not long ago but they got lost in a move nice compact great looking bats

I liked but could never afford anything Mizuno they were the MS back then, also love the look of the TP9's? the ones Lyle used at Augusta great looking irons

No idea about Woods, i can recall i had a hallmark driver and 3 wood, a Joe Powell deep head thing, a couple of hogans and a few Clevelands I always wanted the M85W Eye o Matic a great looking stick, i never found one. Got one of them in the museum Jack?

Cheers mate. I have quite a collection now and keep adding to it by doing up the old neglected bats. Its a labour of love.

Geoff Flanagans "Hole-in-one" golf shop was in Centre Rd. Loads of really cool old stuff. Bill Edgar from Comm used to work there most days before he passed away. I bought a few sets there before they closed down.

Wasn't playing back then, though I did start out with a set of Wilson Staff blades from that era that turned out to be quite sought after so sold them for 5x what I paid for them :)

A set of irons that I liked heaps, (and kept for 10+ years), were the 1996 Lynx Black Cats, the ones with the plastic polymer insert in the cavity and the .400 steel 'Flare' shafts that were irreplaceable as no-one made them a short time later!

I started playing golf at 17 using a borrowed set of macgregor blades not sure if they were the muirfield blades but they were hard to hit for a beginner. The next 10 years I went through various sets of cavity backs eye 2's, 845's, lynx paralax etc which werent really classics. I have a small headed Macgregor 1 wood in the shed which I picked up about 10 years ago was mint until I put a sky mark on it:( Recently I have had 3 sets of mp33's but they would have been late 90s to early 00s great irons.

The 845's fit the brief. They came out in 1988 and ran all the way through to 1998.
At a rough guessimate nearly 30% of the single figure golfers I was playing with and against in Riverland pennants were gaming these a year after release. I jumped on the band wagon in 89. I used these irons for more years than any other sticks I've owned.

They were like the poor man's Ping Eye 2's. Pings were near double the price of most other clubs if memory serves me correct.

Yes they were the ones Norman used I knew they had different writing on them, one of the Vic opens at yarra I was watching hit wedges to Williams who was catching them in his towel he didn't have to move once.

At the same tournament Norman had a hit of Gales Maxflis on the range, never seen that before.

CT what was the set of dunlops David graham used at the Heath when you were there, He gave them to the prick of a pro there at the time who promptly put them in the shop at 2k. Circa '87. Graham then used Hogan PC's for the rest of the tourney

My first full set (mid 1980s) was the PGF Status Mk-III, but the really good players in the club were all rocking either the PGF Aristocrat or the Prosimmon Hallmark.

I actually found the old PGFs in the shed at my parents house recently - the grips are almost totally gone now, but the heads still look pretty good. I hit a couple with the 7-iron (best remaining grip) and they still go pretty well with the Maxfli HT Tour Balatas that were also in the bag .....

Maxfli Royal only mark on them was the dot and the circle. Most of royal stuff was just pure. Heaps of Japanese tour pros played Dunlop back then including IBF.
Lenny the pro at KH was a little different he would have used the coin for the punt. That Vic Open was unreal plenty of funny stuff a massive argument between The Dog DG and the cheat Stanley missed put on the 3rd during the masters almost came to a fist fight on on the tee during the pro am. Faldo's and Norman's women, Mckays alby, Newbies having a smoke. Ogle's dummy spit so massive he threw his clubs away. Yeah plenty of great and not so great equipment. It was the start of the transition to the modern golf clubs of today!

They were a "hand-me-down" set from a friend - they weren't in great nick! Which is probably why I looked at the Aristocrats and Hallmarks with such envy :)

Mind you, I played with them for a fair while, and my next set was the Status Mk V so I can't have hated them too much.

No mention of the pornos playing in the proshop workshop!!!! As the first year trainee I spent most of my time buffing clubs 5 days a week! Buffed plenty of amazing irons and dipped heaps of great woods during my time there. Occasionally was let out to play with the members bloody funny stuff! Had to leave the Heath after getting caught with a Lacey Underall on the course.

Some of Australian Blades should be rating here? Some models looked great! Found this.

However, the first american models were not available until 1976....if you find a set they're stamped with the old school Maxfli dot on the heel and I think "made in australia" next to it....they made a model retooling in 77 and used the same die until 83 with minor cosmetic changes (77-78 was Maxfli in script on the muscle with a dot next to it, 78-81 was MAXFLI stamped on the muscle (if you've bought Maxfli balls recently, it's the same font), 81-83 was Maxfli in another script on the toe).

The line line sort of faded off and on after that. Maxfli released a line of musclebacks called "Pro Special" that replaced the Australian Blades from around '85 to '89 and then the DP-30s showed up. The DPs (DP stood for "Dunlop Performance" and there are a myriad of other DP models offered overseas) were a very popular overseas model that has a very Japanese look in compairson to other Australian Blade models, the toe is fatter towards the bottom and transitions into a sharply pointed toe...also has a pretty high heel.

In '92 Maxfli had Tad Moore on their design team and he designed the TM92s, which were the last actual forged Australian Blades. Those were around for a handful of years and the line again disappeared until the MCT-97s (designed by Maltby) were released. They were followed by the last iteration of the line in 2000-2001.

Ha, was just talking about this very club on the weekend with a mate from Kapunda. John Daly was using one as he was caving the face of everything else at the time. He pulled up a pic of the Wild Thing in full swing with one as I'd never herd or seen one before. I found a heap of pics of one on the weekend. Not sure if I saved any but shouldn't be too hard to find again. I'll try tomorrow when home from work.

I think it was a Kevlar composite head and a real white. I played a few different versions for a few years 91 -93.The titanium shaft was stiff as and produced in a stock 44.5 inch considering that 43.5 was stock back then it ripped.

Gee they've aged well as they still still feel fantastic to hit. Not harsh like I thought they might be be. Even the miss hits were no worse than what I would expect with my current AP2 712's. I would doubt it as Norman was a Spalding contracted player from 78 - whenever he changed to cobra. May have been a set made for him for an appearance in Japan most OS players who played in JPGA events got sets of Mizuno's given. The logo's would suggest these are not custom grinds as the ms1 model was the club of the day and these are not square enough. But I have been wrong many times before as these look like great sticks.

Said he changed depending on what country he was playing in at the time. most OS players playing in Asia in the 80 and 90's played with local clubs like Maruman, Mizuno, Dunlop, Pro Gear etc as a players merchandise contract was generally written for their main tour epga and uspga whilst they could use who ever paid them the most in Japan. Not sure if its the same these days. Or that RMc is a club ho?

Gamed the Cobra Tour Model II's in comp yesterday.
Hit some great shots including a flushed 3iron all over the pin on par 3 14th into the wind.
Felt good to hit, not harsh and unforgiving. They are 1/2 a club shorter length wise but that's easy to adjust to.
Looking forward to gaming these again.

More Vintage goodness arrived today.
Set of Cobra Mild Steels 1 iron plus 3-10 iron. Unable to tell exactly what shafts are in these as they have no bands. They are True Tempers thou.
These look very similar to the Tour Model II's and were made during the same time. The Mild Steels ran from 1982-1986 where the Tour Model II's ran from 1982-1984. The muscle back runs slightly higher and cuts off to a rough finish at the very top.
Not sure when I'll get these out for a game as the Tour Model II's are going so well atm. The grips are a bit crusty and need to be changed.

Very nice, your current gamers or just for collection?
What year did they run from?

Sorry for all the questions, I just like the old classic blades.

These arrived a few weeks ago. Was doing a ph clean up and realised I hadn't posted pics. Too busy re-shafting the Mild Steels.

Very nice! It's funny how a lot of the sets back then were designed for carrying 4 woods and only going to a SW. Obviously balls went shorter and spun more but now it's all about carrying 5 wedges!

Nobody ever carried four woods though.

Back when I started the 5 wood was uncommon, and it was only when the Little Slammer and the Cobra Baffler became popular that 5 wood started to be standard. Usually the set up was 1 wood or 2 wood, four wood then 2 iron, 3 iron. No gap wedges back then, either.

There is no doubt that when polished up the persimmons look great. Nice pics Hatch.

Very impressive Hatch; you should come with me to Victoria next year for the vintage day.

I'll be keeping an eye out to see if I can make it work.

Do they feel terrible on miss's? They look like they would

They are just like any other blade I have hit. Pure out of the middle, but weak out of the toe.

I use the Callaway supersoft ball and the low compression ball makes all hits feel solid.

If you used a Pro V or other high compression ball they jar and put a lot of stress on the shaft.

The clubs equate to 2 full clubs difference with modern lofts. (eg the 1 iron has modern 3 loft)

Rebooting this thread, as I've started to collect a few of the more classic clubs from the past.

They aren't so easy to come by in Australia, well at least in my experience.

But recently was able to come by a Wilson 8802, a set of Muirfield 20th anniversary irons and matching woods.

Picked up a set of '73 Hogan Apex irons last year.

Anyone else collecting?
