Agreed with everyone else. Marginal processor speed increase will be hardly noticeable. Assuming it's for school, if she is doing thing like Photoshop or video editing, memory boost will give much more tangible performance benefit.

But as MTB said, if she's just using it for Facebook etc, tell her she can buy her own computer :D

Hang on, how old is your daughter/how old are you? Did you breed early or do you consume souls to stay looking young?

Been there done that. As Public Enemy once said; Don't Believe The Hype!

Waste of money for just another operating system wrapped in a stunning shell.

Never ever again!

Macs are worth every bit of 'hype', sure they're more expensive but they're head and shoulders above pc laptops. Especially for kids and people that aren't IT inclined.

Today you can get a previous model 13" MacBook Air from the Apple Outlet for $960. That's actually not a bad buy, all things considered.

Ok, she is 13 and goes to private school, their operating system is mac. she loves the computer but this one is dated and she is having to redo multiple things and reformat them to old programs that her computer wont do.i just dont want her to struggle with school, as its already hard enough for kids these days. i figure its 2k for a new computer that the good lord willing will last her 5 years like her last mac did. btw its still going and we will use it after it gets deschooled for my personnel use if you know what i mean=P~. Yes she also has the BOOK, but thats what her iphone and ipad are for. computer is school work homework only, which she takes pretty seriously, or she loses the other I's and its a sad house when this takes place

If she is 13 why on earth do you want to give her a Macbook Pro?

thats what she needs MTB, stright from the teachers who run her classes. mate i had a #2 pencil and paper, a manual typewriter if you were super awesome student/not naughty.
* i never got to use it.

trust me i would love to spend that 2K on myself but, if its needed then its needed. got no other explanation than that mate:smt102

Some schools get very particular about minimum requirements. God forbid they told my wife my daughter needed a Mac rather than a pc. This must be why we like the state system, where I'll get the new laptop and they get my old half working hand me down 😉

:), im the opposite, i get the hand me down and the kids get the good stuff. but yea thats what this school required and the previous one wanted the same running system from years 3-7.

Why?

There are so many reasons. The biggest and most glaring one is that they're made by a single manufacturer with their own hardware vs being built using parts from 100's of 1000's of different combinations of hardware.

How can you be you sure the teacher knows the difference?

ask why they need a Pro. If the teachers are saying it, then its likely they are just guessing (caught up in the hype). If it really was a minimum requirement then you would receive the minimum spec from their It dept in writing, with some qualification.

a current Macbook Air craps all over a 2 yo Macbook Pro (assuming SATA disk drive). IMHO get her an AIR now, then another one which will be even more portable and lighter in 3 years time. Total cost probably less then a Pro that lasts five and she wont be whinging how slow it is in 3 years time.

with good reason, I can actually imagine all the difficulties students have with sourcing their own laptops and software anyway, so many problems with kids screwing up their machines and so on, and the schools highschool staff trying to figure out where the support boundaries begin and end.

My kids school went down the path of a standard environment, so they supply all the laptops under a lease agreement, so every kid gets the same computer from grade 4 to 12, plus the software, including specialised stuff, like CAD if they need it. I think we pay $80 a month extra for this. They beleived they save a fortune on support costs doing it this way, if a kid complains somethings not working, they wipe it and reinstall the standard system and on their way again.

p.s. they chose Macbooks

I checked out after most of that and said thanks and just got one. Cheers Everyone for input, always nice to get a few opinions. computers arnt my strong point, but neither is golf so go figure, but if you want to kill a pig, then im your man lol

my macbook air craps all over the 5 pros i have they are all the same year models just my air is maxed out. i can run anything on this. I always have after effects, photoshop illustrator and a few other programs running different things at the same time without any problems.

Ditto. Had to have my MacBook Pro's HDD replaced too.

I can GUARANTEE you as someone who teaches the elderly and the thick (which are quite often one and the same here) a PC is about 500 gajillions times easier to teach than a Mac.
