Created this thread as the 2014 GSM thread. As I don't have access to the EOI thread, it was easier to create an new one for us to keep track of the status as I will update it regularly.

Thinking about capping this event to 24 OZgolfers and 6 Vines members to keep the cost to $35/head for each round. At this stage about 3 members/reciprocal are Ozgolfers already. The other three members have played Ozgolf events previously.

I'd like to book this in as soon as possible as the playing slots are filling up early.

Accommodation
The Vines is in the Swan Valley region in WA. It is semi-rural with wineries and breweries as its primary tourist attractions. Ellenbrook is the nearest town (7 mins) with about 15,000 population and has major shops and restaurants. Perth city is 40 mins away. Accommodation will be at the Vines resort. We will be staying in groups of five in the chalets/apartments. Each unit has a Queen and four single-sized beds in three bedrooms. Each apartment is self-contained. Pool, squash and tennis courts are minutes walk from the apartment. The golf courses are minutes walk.

Apartment is fully self contained with two bathrooms, a fully equipped kitchen with microwave, fridge, oven, dining, lounge with television, laundry with washing machine and dryer. The cost will be about $65/head/night. Buffet breakfast can be included for $25 more. There is a Cafe at the course that can make bacon and egg rolls etc.

All the breweries, wineries, Supagolf and restaurants and the usual fast-food outlets such as McD, KFC, HJs, Dominoes, Eagle Boys, Subway, Nandos etc. are about 10-15 min drive away.

Golf
20th Nov, Thursday - TBD

21st Nov, Friday - TBD
Afternoon - Chequers Golf Club for 9 and BBQ onsite. Alcohol is cheap. They could do night golf if we're motivated enough. Chequers is 15 minutes from Vines.

The Vines Resort and Country Club
The Heineken and Johnny Walker Classics have been held here previously. Playing both 18s will allow you to experience the composite course used for tournaments - Ellenbrook 1,2 - 12-18 and Lakes 10-18. The cost will be $35/18 holes (Member's guest pricing). Carts will cost about $21/person.

Tee-off around 10.30am. To provide time for breakfast, swim and spa and golf after!

22nd Nov, Saturday - The Vines - Ellenbrook Course: At this stage this is tentatively booked. Afternoon - Supagolf and then Elmars, Feral, Mash breweriesetc.

23rd Nov, Sunday - The Vines - Lakes Course: At this stage this is tentatively booked. Afternoon - Presentations, pool, tennis, BBQ onsite in members area.

With the lack of Easties attending this year, combined with the fact that Sun City is still under renovations and the fact that The Vines is in atrocious shape, from all reports; the suggestion has been made to return south and play some quality golf courses.

Prelim discussions are looking at Mandurah/Binningup combo on Friday and then Bunbury & Capel on the weekend, best case scenario.

Personally...I am driving 4+ hours so don't give a toss where it is as long as

A) Accomodation is close and relatively affordable.
B) PUBS....staggering distance to accomodation.
C) Transport to and from course is relatively easy (hell I could fit 5 with equipment but the alcohol content might be an issue).

From what Nuffie was saying there is a chance the vines will be ok but working out an alternative is no bad thing either.

As long as its not Wannerroo, Kwinana or Kennedy Bay (nothing against them but trying to play more courses this year) I will be there with bells on....or off...depending on the beer :)

Not fussed with where we play. If we had more non-WA, Vines would have been a much better option due to location, facilities and course style.

However, as it is going to be predominantly WA, I'll cancel the Vines and we'll do the same as we've always done and play the same courses.

Someone will have to pick up the organisation. I'm not to keen on paying the deposit at the Vines and then chasing up the late payers as they start to pull-out.

Fairways are 8/10, muddy patches and dry spots in some parts of the fairway.
1st cut rough is 7/10 due to dire wring lengths of grass.
Bunkers 7/10 as the edges a well defined, sand is thin in some spots but not worse than others we have played in terms of consistency.
Greens are 6/10 generally as the they have multiple grasses that have been treated. Running true but slow - about 8-9 ATM. Comp days, faster as they are rolled and cut. Both courses are due to be cored soon so it's moot at this stage.

Overall perspective for both courses.

My $0.02;

I played nine holes there last year with Vic and it wasn't in super nick, but there was nothing that was that bad that it would have any significant effect on your enjoyment of the weekend. The greens were slow (and also covered in dew which made it hard to judge anyway).

Personally, I'd rather play The Vines than Secret Harbour.

G.K
31st March 2014, 03:19 PM
I had a hit on Ellenbrook on Sunday too and agree with Vic's comments regarding condition. There was a few greens that were looking a bit worse for wear. 14 in particular has seen much better days. But overall, the greens were rolling true, just a bit slow(dew had a bit to do with it on the early holes however). I even managed 5 x one putts and only one 3 jack so they can't be all bad. Noticed a few bare patches on some fairways(3 springs to mind) but nothing too major.

The 3 bunkers I ended up in we're in better nick that what they have been in the past. They looked to have been groomed by the greens staff recently which I don't recall noticing before when playing there.

If the course/s are no worse than their current condition by November, I don't have a problem playing there.

In regards to staying/not, is there any folks out there that would attend if it was held local(i.e. Vines), but would not otherwise be able to if it meant spending the whole weekend away?

I'll be playing if it's held local but won't be if it's down south and means a weekend away.

I have no issue with it being moved down south though as one of the big reasons for events like this is to get everyone away together and the hijinks that goes on at these weekends away that wouldn't happen if everyone went home at night. I would prefer to be staying rather than heading home each night but would rather keep the brownie points up my sleeve to potentially get back to Vic Champs again next year or perhaps the Qld Champs.

I cop a lot of sh** for being a tightarse, but being on one modest income forces me to be. I flake out by 10pm every night anyway so I'd be staying until around then to socialise, and going back home to save money on accommodation. In my situation, it doesn't make sense for me to spend $400 on a weekend if I can get 90% of the golf and social fun for $200.
If it becomes a weekend down south, the total $$$ outlay will determine if I go or not but in that case I'd be more willing to spend the extra money.
