There's still a week to go, but there'll be some who won't play any more golf for 2013 so it's time to start looking at how your golfing year went. I'll roll out the same questions as years past, with a few minor modifications... just copy the headings below and add your responses.

How did you go?
Overall, I feel it was a positive year. I didn't get to put my name on any trophy's, but I feel as though I have consolidated my game & found some consistency (for the most part). I'm still not quite happy with where my swing is yet though.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Outside of specific Champs goals, I didn't have anything specific I set out to achieve, except beating Lefty in matchplay. That may have taken a few goes, but I got there in the end. 8)
A more recent goal borne out of greater consistency is keeping all of my flagged rounds in single figures. I have that covered at the moment, but this will be a rolling benchmark.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Definitely forwards from my perspective.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Both the Champs trips (VIC & QLD) were fantastic. Meeting up with a bunch of OZgolfers (new & old) again is always a highlight.
I may not have given it much airtime due to playing off social tees, but shooting 67 (-5) around my home track was a memorable experience for me.

Did you play some great courses?
Sure did... all of the VIC Champs courses were fantastic, all of which I had played previously except for Spring Valley. I also enjoyed the QLD Champs lineup, my favourite of which was Lakelands, closely followed by The Glades. I wasn't overly excited by Royal Pines, but the chance to play a course setup for the big boys was also exciting.
---------------

Handicap
Started on: 7.9

No. of rounds: 59 in GL so far, with a couple more expected in the next week or so. There were also 8 un-handicapped Champs rounds and countless social rounds at my home track.

Highest Handicap: 8.0

Lowest Handicap (Anchor): 6.2

Finished on: Barring anything crazy, in the next week, I'll finish on 6.6
---------------

2014
What are your goals for 2014?
Tweak my swing a little more. Keep the flagged rounds in single figures. Win a Monthly Medal.

Got any golfing holidays planned?
The only one booked in so far in the VIC Champs. There is potentially a Europe trip on the cards in the 2nd half of the year, so I'll be aiming at a round or 3 on another continent if it happens.

Have a particular course lined up to play?
The VIC Champs lineup. I can't wait for Royal Melbourne to tear me a new one. I'm going to shoot a thousand and enjoy every moment of it.
It'll also be nice to finally get to see the back 9 at the Dunes.

How did you go?
Inconsistency would sum up my year. FIFO work limits my practice ability. But a change to a new job has at least kept my golf relatively steady

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Yes – I broke 18 handicap, and I got the Mrs started and now she loves to play.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Forwards, although I haven’t killed my occasional hack slice.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
9 rounds of golf in 7 days at Mission Hills, and playing with my mate when he finally broke his lifelong dream of breaking 80.

Did you play some great courses?
World Cup, Faldo, and Norman at Mission Hills were the best, although I played Palmer Coolum for the first time and really enjoyed it.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Kind of. Was getting the shites almost every game, went out this year to just try an enjoy it. I think it worked.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Forwards, then maybe a slight hiccup (re: injury) at the end of the year which has set me back

How did you go?
As expected I guess. Played some good golf, played some truly horrible golf, but enjoyed my time on the course. It was certainly different to be going out 'for fun' as opposed to trying to always play to handicap or something.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
I don't really know what I wanted to achieve. I think I just wanted to enjoy golf more and I think I am starting to do that.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Backwards.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Playing the Holden Scramble regional final was fun. And playing Royal Pines the week after the PGA was great. Making back-to-back birdies there was pretty cool as well!

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Probably a touch forward. My bad games are nowhere near as bad as they were. Putting is better.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Shooting a 68 at Highlands GC in the final round of the champs. That achievement was overshadowed by coming from behind in a surprise win to take out the champs.

How did you go? It was decent, but sensing some good things just around the corner with my recent change of home courses and some swing tweaks that seem to be bearing fruit.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve? No real goals set.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards? Tiptoed forward a little. Certain areas of my game are on the improve whilst others are still in need of work. But I can happily say that I have far more confidence in hitting driver off the tee than ever before.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share? Besides a B Grade monthly medal win in November, plus NSW Champs weekend, not much that I can recall.

Did you play some great courses? Royal Pines and Lakelands were standouts. Not sure if I can genuinely call our Sat/Sun QLD champs courses great given the bunkers being GUR. Moss Vale was also a pleasant surprise.

Handicap

No. of rounds:16 (similar number of social rounds)

2014
What are your goals for 2014? Single figures is within grasp. I just need to see to it that I can put in a good 18 holes and not just one of the 9s. Plus to make the most of time and get at least 3 Saturday rounds in per month, plus play club champs and do well.

Got any golfing holidays planned? NSW champs in June, possibly City of Cairns whenever that is, and maybe QLD Champs if I can be diligent enough in my saving plan. I may also be going down to Melbourne for a couple of days in April so will take the clubs down for a round somewhere if time permits.

How did you go?
Had a great time. Nice mixture of reasonable golf (for my level) and complete embarrassment.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Didn't set any goals.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Both. Scored better but swing turned to shit badly and was really inconsistent.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Shooting 5 points for the front line at Araluen in the WAnkers Summer Cup was the most memorable. Managed to double my efforts to finish with a whopping 15pts.

WA Champs were great fun again. Played shit, but Sundays rounds with Shorty and Rubin was the funniest 18 holes of golf I've ever played.

Won overall nett in Club Champs again, and gross in B Grade.

Finished the year with a two man Ambrose comp with Dad, first time we've played together as a team. We were rubbish but had a blast and hope to do it again.

Did you play some great courses?
Cottesloe Golf Club was a standout, really liked it and played well there to boot.
Played Meadow Springs fort the first time and was really impressed by it.
Had a hit at Royal Hartfield for the first time and liked it also.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share? Improving my mental game with the help of Bob Rotella's books. How did you go?

Not well. Surprised myself with some gross wins at WA and QLD Champs, but lost my first ever OZgolf Matchplay and Club Champs final (not to mention allowing Courty to "nick one through slips for four". Never again!). Despite feeling like I've struck the ball really well this year the handicap has gone out from 12 months ago and confidence is shot. A broken shell of a man.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?

No, the club champs win was my only goal this year. Lost 7/6 in the final despite being only 3 over so I guess I can't complain, but still.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?

Forwards, then extremely backwards. Seems I'm a bit of a mudder. Handicap trend over the last 3 or 4 years sees a very distinct lowering during the colder, soggier months before blowing out during summer.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?

Not to toot my own horn but I think VIC Champs went pretty well this year, with a great social aspect.
The trips to WA and QLD were both awesome in their own rights, and meeting (or seeing again) a great bunch of guys is always a highlight.
A couple of under par rounds for the year were nice to experience again after a 15-month hiatus.
Undefeated in Div 1 Pennant playing at no. 2 was special and went well with doing the same last year, although was at 3 or 4 last year.
4 rounds with Solarman. And seeing Haysey's swing in the flesh.

Did you play some great courses?

I thought Southern GC was very underrated after playing it, and while not a huge fan of the style of courses, St Andrews Beach and Moonah were very good. Spring Valley is always superb.
Thought Kwinana was a nice track and the pick of the WA courses. Secrets and Meadow Springs both more than good too, although I would kill to have the back nine at Meadow Springs again.
Enjoyed Royal Pines, The Glades and Hope Island from the QLD courses.
Cairns GC in August is a magnificent track, in December, not so much.. Paradise Palms was nice, if not ruined by one ****ing hole! ;-)

The scouting mission to RM West in October, while played in horrendous conditions, was very special.

Club Champs this time around is a must, and REALLY want to get to 1 handicap. Flirted with it a couple of times in the last 24 months, reaching 1.5 the first time around and 1.9 this year.

Got any golfing holidays planned?

The one and only VIC champs. I honestly think you'd struggle to line up 5 better courses to fit in with what we needed than the ones we have. Maybe a National Old, or a stronger course for Monday but in saying that there is certainly nothing wrong with Kew GC.

Have a particular course lined up to play?

I love Woodlands GC, and of course RM West is the ducks nuts. Kew GC will be a relaxing round in a beautiful setting.
Honestly, I'm not trying to sell it but anyone who isn't playing all 5 days of the VIC Champs is missing out.
Nothing set beyond that.

Not great but had a heap of fun learning the game in my first year
Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Didn't really set any goals apart from improving and I've done that so I guess I did

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Forwards, it surely couldn't have gone backwards!

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?

Winning my first ever matchplay, sorry Yoss!

Dropping 6 shots in 7 rounds was good too, managed to grab a heap of comp wins in the process and get myself enough golf balls to last a while.
Did you play some great courses?

No real amazing courses but really liked both Kwinana and Hartfield best of the few I played

How did you go?

Took the game back up this January after not playing seriously since 2002. Was off 6 when I left the game as a 19yo, came back to the game by playing 20 rounds in January in Mornington Peninsula, then got my hcp in Feb at Royal Bexley of 7... Which was probly a bit low but I happened to hit it well during my hcp rounds. Practiced a lot from Mar-Jun and got down to 5, then got lazy and hung around 7 for the next few months, just getting back down now... Overall better than i thought...

How did you go?

I had great year both on and off the course. It was great to meet and play with so many ozgolfers this year!! My handicap went from 3.8 to anchored in 22 rounds, mainly due to a lack of golf. Since then I've been playing more and now I'm back down to 4 and on my lowest ever handicap at 3.8.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?

In patches achieved what I wanted, which is to become more consistent. I ended the year on a lower handicap than I thought I would, but my bad rounds are nowhere near as bad as they once was.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?

I think I have taken some major steps forward with my game after spending some time before my club champs at the practice range with Virge, (massive thanks mate!!) and working hard on my putting in the last 12-15months. Through a lack of games and bad technique I was feeling like my game went backwards and I hit my anchor so decided my game need some work and I took the 1.5hour up to see Virge a Narrabeen. After about 10 shots, Virge started to tell me how shit my swing was and set about teaching me proper swing path and how the release a club. About 3 hours I was still swinging it like a donkey, but knew I was on the right track. A couple more visits and the long ame is slowly coming around. As a bonus of what Virge is teaching, my release and path is so much better and as an added bonus my short game has improved out of sight. I now have shots that I didn't have 12 months ago and I feel like I'm a 10 times a better player than I was a year ago and my bad games are not so bad.

My putting has come along way since I've changed from left hand low back to conventional grip. I was averaging about 36-39 putts around, which was combination of bad chipping and plenty of 3 putts. Now I'm going around 30 putts a round, with a low of 24 at Canarvon a few weeks ago.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?

There have been quite a few highlights this year but the rounds that have stood out are:
19.01.13 at Glenmore - I had 77 Scratch off 6 in their Cup day, first time I've shot under my handicap of what I considered a really low handicap
20.01.13 at Cabramata - 40 points off 6. It was great to follow up a great score with another good score
12.10.13 - 2nd round of the club Champs - 77 scratch - First time shot under my handicap in the champs.
24.01.13 at Stone Cutters Ridge - 41 Points off 5. This round was full of firsts: First time I played off 5, First time I was on the same handicap as my mate and first time I shot even par anywhere

22.12.13 at Cabramatta - 41 Points off 5, first time I shot even par around my home track. I felt I almost played flawless golf and gives me confidence I can go under when I'm next in that position.

I also got into a couple of Vardon events when I was off 4.

Lastly attending Qld Champs and meeting all the guys, what a great 4 days off golf!!

Did you play some great courses?

Royal Pines cos that's where Adam Scott won
Glades I have the Glades, and it was the most fun I've had on a golf course for awhile.
Lakelands - Awesome but fair test of golf.

I always enjoy myself on the course, sure there are times when I'm pissed off & frustrated as buggery but I wouldn't have it any other way. I've got a great bunch of mates & I don't know anyone who has more fun than us while playing, sledging, beers & bourbon, I love it!

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Yes & no, had some really good rounds but there was some junk too. Didn't do anything about my $2 head

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
I broke my foot early last year & didn't stop playing golf which was stupid. Two things happened because of it, firstly it hurt like hell & has only come good recently & secondly because it hurt so much I didn't transfer my weight to my front foot (the broken one) & it has unfortunately become part of my swing. Doing my best to get rid of it now though. Also need to get rid of the hero stuff & accept that sometimes bogey is a good score. Putting improved plenty (cough NSW putting champ cough) but have lost some distance off the tee, hangover from the foot.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Plenty of laughs, met plenty of good people, upset a few dickheads & managed to shoot even a few times at Dunheved & my home track Penrith.

How did you go?
Enjoyed my second year of golfing addiction immensely.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Managed to play 9 holes fairly regularly with some 18s thrown in as well, which allowed me to learn my swing a bit better, and now I have some idea of what I did wrong when I pull out a really shocking shot.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Starting from a fairly rubbish place, forwards was the only option :D
Broke 90 a few times, and an 82 was tantalisingly close. Scored my first eagle and improved my putting a lot.

Well yes, I beat Canuck again.

I had my first ever losing year at pennant (2-6), which was a reflection of form and being thrown to the wolves at #1 all year.

No doubt backwards. Playing once a week and never practicing will do that.

Not playing at Nambour or Nudgee added to my golfing experience for the year.

"Great" is a seriously overused word. There would be lucky to be half a dozen great courses in Australia. There are quite a lot of very good ones though.

How did you go? Looking at the year as a whole it seems I was just spinning my wheels, going nowhere. But looking at the different stages in context with the events that transpired at that time it's fair to say I'm fairly content with the way it all turned out.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve? Both yes and no. I recall setting a goal to get to as close to scratch as I could, as well as improving my stats across the board. Cant say honestly if my stats have improved because I haven't kept track since before June. Only just started again now.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards? Both- managed to stay at 5 for the first 6 months before heading out and resting on my anchor for a while before reeling it back in in the final 3 months of the year. I am on the upswing of improvement atm which is good.

Are there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share? I shot a couple under par for 9 on three occasions, had my first legit hole out from the fairway for eagle and had more birdies than ever before including a run of 6 over 18- my most for a round. I did have a great game with my Step-Father at Paradise Palms over the Oz day long weekend which was something we have been trying to do for ages.

If you want to organise a Monday off work in February, I'm planning on playing there with PGN, $65 including cart.

Apparently the discounted rate is only for PGN members. Guests of PGN pay the rack rate.

You might be able to sneak it past the pro shop peeps tho.

How did you go?
Best year enjoyment wise, with my wife taking the game up. She started playing in March and has gone from 45 to 26 cap.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Didn't set any playing goals. Have however finally got a club set up that has taken years to find/waste money/buy/sell/swap. (Except putting)

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
Forwards.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Winning the Gavin Simms Memorial
Winning the Nullabor Cup
Hole in One at Royal Queensland.

Did you play some great courses?
Wouldn’t say great courses, got to play some interesting ones.

How did you go? Pretty happy with how I played. First year I played full time, rather than on off once a month etc. managed at least one game a week.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
Aimed to get to single figures, started at 12. Never really gone lower, hovered 12-14 for a number of years, managed to get into single figures early in the year and got it down further and further.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards? Forwards

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share? No real low rounds just ground out scored 36/37/38 points

Did you play some great courses?
Not really, tend to play my own track but got to okay The Australian which was lots of fun

All in all a pretty satisfying year. If I can build on that for next year I hope to make it down to 3 at some stage. Ultimate goal would be to remain 4.4 or less long term.

How did you go?
Equal parts enjoyment and frustration, need to remind myself it's just a game!

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
On the course - Not really. Had some lessons with Brad Parker up at Wembley who has been great. Iron play is the area that has been costing me, was getting too focused on form over results and steering everything. Hitting irons well on the range now just need to transfer to the course. Had a few rounds where I hit ever fairway and missed every green... Frustrating

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
forward in terms of handicap drop but not as fast as I'd hoped given how well I had been hitting it on the range

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Lots of enjoyable rounds with like minded people is probably the highlight. Winning the NAGA at the GSM is up there as well!

Did you play some great courses?
Lucky enough to play my home track most weeks, can't remember a time this year when it was in less than excellent condition. Played Lake Karrinyup a couple of times before the Perth International, great track for the power draw!

I had a good year. First year of playing regularly after 20 years of once a round golf.

Started in may, begun with a 15 hc, and got it down to 10 now.

Im having fun.

How did you go?

Um. Terrible. It was always going to be tough to follow up last year but I exceeded all my wildest expectations of how bad my golf game could get!

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?

Not really. Didn't get to defend anything that I won last year (didn't even qualify for club champs finals). I did manage to get my name on a couple of pennant flags in my first season playing, it's about the only thing I can say I really achieved.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?

Backwards, in a big way. Went from 6 to being anchored on 11, and haven't broken 80 since March.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?

Hanging on to win the final match of our pennant final in front of an audience from both teams + extras. That was tough, but good. 4-3 and we got our name on the flag.

I also caddied for a mate in a higher division and watched him hole out from 100 metres to win his match and get them over the line for the northern Tas regional flag. Pretty awesome way to finish our pennant season.

Did you play some great courses?

All the Vic Champs courses were great - Spring Valley broke me completely, but I'd still love to have another crack at it (maybe with a little less wind) :) But Southern and StAB were probably my favourites, for different reasons. Didn't really get to play anywhere else - not sure if it was this year or last year I played Tasmania GC for 4 holes before they closed it due to wind - looking forward to getting there again and playing it properly.

What are your goals for 2014?

Get back to single figures again, and just try to score more consistently. I don't believe I can maintain a 6 handicap all the time playing once a week, but 8 or 9 shouldn't be out of the question if I just get my mindset right. Part of that is learning to just relax and enjoy it no matter what happens.

Got any golfing holidays planned?

Yep, Vic champs.

Have a particular course lined up to play?

Doing a Barnbougle/Lost Farm run next month, so that'll be fun. Then following that up with 4 great courses in Vic champs in Feb. REALLY looking forward to Royal Melbourne, even though it's probably going to kick my arse. Beyond that, who knows.

How did you go?
Good. I played in patches where I would have over a month off, then play several weeks in succession. I don't play or practice that much overall, so I'm happy to maintain my handicap in single figures. My scores are fairly consistent too.

Did you achieve what you wanted to achieve?
I don't see the point in setting scoring goals, if I'm not going to work towards meeting them. I made the pennant team again, which was a goal. I was disappointed with my performance in the club champs, despite improving on 2012 scores.

Did your golf game go backwards or forwards?
I'll count it as forwards.

Any there any outstanding experiences from the year, that you'd like to share?
Both OZgolf Champs were fantastic weekends and I love playing pennant for the club. I didn't have any of my own trips this year though.

Did you play some great courses?
All the Vic Champs courses were pretty bloody good. I'm very much a home course player now though.

Finished on: 8.0
---------------

2014
What are your goals for 2014?
No handicap goals, although I'd love to play off 7. Make pennant team and help team win division, improve on club champs scores, and qualify for matchplay champs. These goals are a bit dependent on potential clashes with running.

Got any golfing holidays planned?
Vic Champs. I travel to Melbourne in July too, but I don't know if I will have the clubs.

Have a particular course lined up to play?
Nothing besides those that have already been assigned.
