Got the new i5's coming, but I have decided not to use an existing set of PX 5.5's I have.

I like the PX's I have, but I really love the CFS stiff stock shaft in the Pings. With the G25's, I can get a nice high trajectory with the CFS. The PX are not as high, and distances are similar.

I have read that the DG superlite is similar to the CFS, as is the KBS tour.

I haven't used the KBS before, and I have used DG S300's, but found them too heavy.

Any thoughts shaft gurus? Help me spend some money.

And if you have shafts - I probably only want new, as the pings are ferrule-less and I don't want any daggy tip prep showing.

Cheers,
Ben

Modus & KBS tour sounds like what you're after. Im gaming the modus, smooth stable/accurate.
Just enough spin & higher launch than px. KBS is higher launch to me out of the 3.

How do you find the flex in the Modus? I like CFS Stiff and PX5.5 std and soft stepped.

I read the Modus were quite soft to flex.

What shafts are in the i5's or did you buy head only? I am with you on the cfs shafts I like them in the i20's.

The shafts were rifle 5's. I play +1", so I knew they were too short, and I was going to use the PX 5.5 I have, but thought I might give something else a go.

I have no real data but the px 5.5 (non flighted) & stiff modus 120 feels about the same flex. I like both.

Believe me, if I could get a brand new set of CFS-S, that's what I'd do!

what if you soft step them

benno_r
4th December 2013, 08:25 PM
I think CFS-S soft stepped will be too soft.

Right now I think it is going to be KBS - just need to decide which flavour. The tour V looks promising - Stiff sits at 110g, about where I like it.

Well I found somewhere for decent priced KBS. Anyone know how to get hold of some cheap(er) Modus 120? Does anyone in Australia stock them?

I talked to the importer today, and he won't sell direct. Problem is my local shops wouldn't know what a Nippon is, so I doubt I'd get a discount.

Cheers,
Ben

yeah i saw them, they don't have the shafts I want. It's cool though, my i5's are halfway here, and I am itching to tinker. Even thought about some steelfibers to be honest

You'd be a chance of finding something decent from Proclubs http://www.ebay.com/sch/m.html?_odkw=shafts&_osacat=0&_from=R40&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEFSXS%3AMESOI&_ssn=proclubs&_trksid=p2046732.m570.l1313.TR11.TRC1.A0.Xshafts+i ron&_nkw=shafts+iron&_sacat=0

Not wrong - I'd grab the matrix if they had decent tip prep for ferruleless irons. Also a great price for some new C-Tapers as well, but I am looking for something a little higher. Looking at some pXi as well.

C taper is so accurate but definitely low & quite firm. Had to play that in R+.
Definitely lots of choices nowadays.

I play C Taper stiff soft stepped and have no issues with height, definitely higher than dygolds for me anyway.

That's what I was thinking - I got recommended C Taper S softstepped, or PX 5.5 in the Mizuno analyzer. The PX 5.5 in my tour edge go ok, and I have hit Mizuno JPX pros with C-Taper which I liked.

I just worry that Ping i clubs are lower launch the the g's, so thinking maybe a little higher shaft like KBS tour, Nippon, or pXi.

I've got two sets of i20 irons, one with KBS Stiff and one with PXI 6.0 and I like the PXI better.

Maybe it's the weight difference but as a previous user of both PX and PX Flighted, IMO the PXI are better feeling and the trajectory is perfect for me.

i'm with Pt my pxi 6.5's are nice and light but still have a high strong ballflight

benno_r

I don't want to go any stiffer than the PX5.5 I have. I have read pXi plays a hair stiffer - should I stick with 5.5 in pXi?

Captain Nemo
5th December 2013, 10:58 AM
I have i20's with KBS Tour stiff, wouldn't change em.
Fwiw everyone's different.
take Virge for example.
2 marker and plays PX 5.5's and more recently, C-Tapers in R+ (last tome I peaked in his bag....)
I don't know whether they were stock ore hard/soft stepped, he'll tell you.
Prob nab some old pulls and try a few in a 6 iron?

5th December 2013, 10:59 AM
I have ping i20's with CFS stiff and a ping i15 4 iron with a pxi stiff. I think if I was reshafting I would go PXi, as the feel you get seems better than the CFS.

Great ball flight as well with the pxi's.

benno_r
5th December 2013, 11:01 AM
I know you got a pXi 6.0, cause I sold it to you! haha

But I never hit it to know whether the 6.0 or 5.5 was the go!

Well, investigations are over, money has been sent, and a set of brand new Modus3 120 stiffs are on their way. I'll let you know how they go.

Thanks for everyone's help and advice.

I've recently switched to NS Pro in most of my iron sets, better feel and performance characteristics than DG. most of mine are prototypes, but the retail offerings upon which theyre based are equally fantastic

Played my first round with them in at Twin Waters on the weekend. Had the 120's in stiff, put straight in some i5's @ +1", 4-PW.

Beautiful feeling shaft, and when combined with the i5's give a flight similar to my G25/CFS irons. Only problem came about for the last six holes, when the wind got really crazy, and experienced ballooning in my irons for the first time. In no wind, to moderate wind though, no problems. The extra spin really was apparent on the greens too, with an 8 iron that landed and stopped, which is unusual for me.

Very happy with the result. Super shaft.

Cheers,
Ben
