My IT knowledge tells me one thing: a stable system needs stable backing.

For starters, Cendant (former crew behind this monolith) has gone belly-up and has been taken over by Simbient. I have joined a club locally in Sydney, so i need my GolfLink details updated/transferred to Fox Hills. So....

Fox Hills GC tell me i have to get Casino to fax down my information. Casino tell me Fox Hills have to fill out a form and quote my current GolfLink number to get my Home Club information updated. Simbient say that GolfLink have to issue me a new GL number, and start from scratch. GolfLink say that Fox Hills have 4 pieces of information that should be enough: First name, Last Name, Date of Birth and my GL Number. Using this, they can change everything..

I've called GolfLink (1300 650 750 - just in case you ever need it, it's not on their website that i could find). I spoke to some cranky guy at the Helpdesk who is inundated with problems and a little unwilling to talk about it, other than have a whinge that GL isn't working because of the clubs, and that his bosses aren't around this morning.

Sounds like this system is destined to fail. Why? To maintain a database with 1000 clients (or in this case, every participating club in Australia), you need these clients to contact the database at least once per day. As previously discussed, while the database exists, there is no effort to make sure every participating club is making regular contact.

I need a coffee...

Sorry to bore you.. turns out Fox Hills isn't on GolfLink, and just quietly, who'd blame them? ](*,)

Hopefully it won't give rise to a situation where i can't play as a guest on a course because i'm not on GL....

So FD I'm correct in assuming you want Fox Hills to be your home club???

You should be able to simply contact Golflink and have them change your entry so that Fox Hills is your home club :?

I really do agree that Golflink needs to set up some guidelines & FAQ's etc. for clubs to use.

There seems to be no cohesion in the way clubs operate the system, when all they need is to be told how they should be operating.

A lack of organisation on Golflinks behalf seems to be making a relatively simple system extremely difficult to operate.

check the help page on the Golflink site....

Q: I have been told my GOLF Link number is invalid, why is this?

A: The GOLF Link number you have entered was rejected because:
Your club has advised GOLF Link that your Membership Status is 'Invalid'. If this is not correct, you should contact your Home Club to arrange for them to amend your details on GOLF Link.
OR
You may have transferred your Home Club recently and you have been allocated a new GOLF Link number. Your new Home Club can advise you of your new number.
OR
The number you have entered does not exist on the GOLF Link database. Please check that the number is the one that appears on your GOLF Link card.
If you still need further help please contact the GOLF Link Help Desk.

So it seems you will be given a new number, but all your details will be transferd across from the old one???

I don't think that FAQ is completely accurate either judging from the discussion i had with GL. Sounds like you can carry-over your current number (which is generated by state/region/club details), instead of having a new one every time you change clubs.

The reality is that golfers don't change clubs very often, but it's not to say that it never happens..

man, sounds like a total screw up! and we are paying for it with our $$$.
Top off FD's issues with a number of scores 'lost' for me recently. The rounds were entered just no score?????
It just isn't that hard to get right!

Page 16 of your local copy of "The Golfer" - GolfLink has New Partner.

Apparently there are 12 clubs in Australia yet to sign up for GL - i'm just so proud that my newly adopted home is one of them... :?

Change of golflink number seems right. First five digits are the club number. The second five digits are your member number. Why wouldn't it change?

FD,

Hopefully it won't give rise to a situation where i can't play as a guest on a course because i'm not on GL....

I can't imagine that this would happen - my new home club doesn't have Golflink either, and the handicapper at my previous home club told me that if I went to play in something big that I should take proof of my handicap with me as a back up.... I'm sure the Fox Hills handicapper would be able to print off your handicap record easily enough.

I'm sure that there is more than 12.....

In most cases the proof of handicap card was always just for show. Before golf link how many times did you hand in your proof with your scorecard ? Hardly ever. Clubs only care when you record a winning score, and often irrespective of whether you had a handicap card or not they would phone the home club for confirmation.

the clubs that dont use golflink only cause inconvenience to a travelling golfer that has forgot his handicap, otherwise its no big deal. Its not as if one will get refused entry to the course should he not have a handicap card on him.
