Wow!  What a spectacular looking course!  I must play there.

Awesome pics, Vegas.  Thanks.

Looks like a tough course to play when you first go around, as there appears to be several blind shots.

2nd - par 4

If there's a "nothing" hole at BD then this is it.  It's a straightaway par 4 with a fairway bunker that's easily flown.  The green is closely surrounded by rough and is elevated, but that's the only challenge.
Would different weather conditions make the hole any better?

There are a few holes that were a lot easier second time around.

The 3rd hole is pretty amazing. From the tee, you face a dirty great big sand dune. It's not til you get over it that you can see the fairway.

The 4th hole looks like there is no shot at the green until you get up there. there is a decent landing area over the huge front right trap and the green itself is in a "bowl" so shots can feed back onto the surface again.

The 9th is another hole where you can't see much off the tee. the ideal landing area is over the crest. In other words if you can see your tee shot from the tee still, you're miles from the green!

As is typical with the few links courses I've played, there is nearly always more landing area than you think. You just have the confidence to pick a target and hit it. 8)

As for the second hole, I guess if the prevailing NW'erly got really strong, the fairway trap would come into play. The 3rd person in our group was not a big hitter and from the normal tees managed to carry them. I guess you could say that all of the greens are tough into a headwind, but you have to play the conditions and keep the ball close to the ground.

Here is a course review written by another internet axe murderer i have known for years since the dark old days of the 1990's in Rec.sport.golf, and a joint titleholder of the prestigious Rec.sport.golf world championship.

I seem to recall that link being provided before by someone. I might have another read of it tomorrow at work (away from dialup speed).

BV, are those pictures/diagrams of the holes he has on the right of each hole page, from a course guide?

Dunno, but the bit about 'pages from the course guide reproduced with permission" has got me wondering

BrisVegas

yep - that's the course guide. There are no distance markers on the course, so you need the guide to work out where you are in relation to sprinkler heads and bunkers.

Vegas,

Interesting read. One thing about Barny Dunes is how different it plays when the wind comes from different angles. I've had wedge into 8 as well as not being able to get there with a 3 wood. The first time I played there 7 was a full 3 iron - mind you that was the strongest wind I'd ever played in anywhere and we'd just flown it thru 5 off the back tees with 9 irons.

To me it's just the best place to spend 3 or 4 days playing golf in this country.

Hi JJJ, great to hear from you. I'm well aware how lucky we were with the wind during our 2-dayer. We only copped a stiff NE-erly in the 3rd round (first go off the tips!). The first couple of goes around we had only mild NW winds and we played from the second tees. Course is so much easier in those conditions it's not funny. On 8 for eg.. From the second tees and with a NWerly, Brooky17 and I were both able to carry over the tongue of rough and have relatively short irons in. The very next day, I only just made it to the rough and had to hack it forwards with a wedge, which still left a strong 3rd shot.

I still can't help but think the 18th was a disappointment though. Surely they could have done more with it....

Vegas,

I'm starting to think you have spent too long in the tropics.... 18 is a great hole! How many holes have you played that have the beach 10m right of the fairway? It's a tough drive over the hill on a crowned fairway to a good green. If I knew how to post photos on here I'd put a few of 18 up for people to judge.

By the way the only holes I don't like are 8 (stupid until they mow the rough between the fairways) 5 (one dimensional, hit it left) and 16 (awful - just doesn't work). I see we disagree on a few......

I'd be worried if we didn't disagree on a few JJ! :-D Maybe I was just lucky that I was striping my driver the wekend I played it, but I thought 18 was a snack. Bang a driver down the left side, where it feeds to the middle or right, then flick a wedge or short iron in.

I tend to agree with you on 16 though. It's a spectacular "looking"hole from up the top of the dune behind the tees, but was a bit too silly to have much merit.

I liked 5, but maybe because I still tend to favour aesthetics over challenge.. I know you're supposed to feed it in from the left, but I managed to stick my long iron in the dune on the right 3 times and came up short the other.

#5,#7 and #13 still make up a great set of par 3's despite 16. IMO, par 3's are what makes a course.

Drive down, stay at the cabins on site at the club and eat in the clubhouse. It doesn't get much better anywhere.

Brad,

I took the boat from Melbourne last year, next month I'll be flying from Melbourne. For me any time 'wasted' getting there eats into precious time at the course, even if it just means getting in late arvo and having a walk around. If you can manage to get away mid-week even better, whilst seldom crowded you can feel like you own the joint Mon-Fri.

The good thing about Barnbougle is that it's a bit out of the way, so is not overrun with people. I've played it a few times now and have always had pretty quick rounds and managed to walk 36 each day no probs at all. The clubhouse bar and restaurant is a great place for a long lunch between rounds.

From Brisbane, it's a direct flight to Launceston and then an hour's drive (or shuttle bus). Easy peasy. Matter of fact, I might head back there again!

I have only played this course once, despite living in Tassie. It is a 3.5 hour drive from Hobart, which makes it a long day trip. I am planning on going up in December with a couple of mates. It is only $50 for Tasmanians to play!

One of the guys at work is good mates with the owner of Barnbougle Dunes. If you ever planned on a group trip to Barnbougle, let me know and I will see if I can get you a good deal. As I don't know the owner personally, I can't make any guarantees.

The couple of times I've been there with an uncle from Launceston, he was charged the normal price of $120 all day rate.

They're not coming this time. Last time, they hung out in Launceston with her family. We took our own car seat and portacot last time as jetstar don't charge for those items. We did actually go up there for lunch one day as a family, just so they could see what I was talking about. It's a good place for a meal, if nothing else.

reproduced with all the photos back in place...

http://www.barnbougledunes.com/

I visited late March 2005 with Jayson (brooky17) and played it 4 times over a weekend. Also played Launceston GC on the Friday. BD is $80 per round or $100 to play all day. There are no carts, but you can hire trolleys or caddies. We walked 36 both days with trolleys and it was pretty doable. We even had time for a hearty breakfast before the round a had about an hour for lunch in between 18's. We were blessed with decent sunny weather and only moderate winds from both the NW and NE. From what I've heard, Feb-April is a good time to visit.

There are decent cottages available. $160 4-share or $140 3-share. They're only 100 metres or so from the first tee and the clubhouse. This photo is of Jayson and me next to the first tee, with the cottages in the background.
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/1853/jaysonanddionpriortofirstround.th.jpg (http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=jaysonanddionpriortofirstround.jpg)

Getting there - fly into Launceston and hire a car at the airport. It's about an hour drive north up the Tamar River Valley, or more directly through the mountains. Jetstar do direct Brisbane to Launceston flights from $99 each way...

Apologies for the verbage. It really is a great course, that these pics and words don't do justice to.

1st - par 5
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/3573/hole11mx.th.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole11mx.jpg)
easy opener. Drive out to a vast fairway from a tee tucked back in the dunes, close to the cottages. There are some pot bunkers at the layup distance, but with a good drive, this green is reachable.

2nd - par 4
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/1197/hole20ww.th.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole20ww.jpg)
If there's a "nothing" hole at BD then this is it. It's a straightaway par 4 with a fairway bunker that's easily flown. The green is closely surrounded by rough and is elevated, but that's the only challenge.

3rd - par 4
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/451/hole34ir.th.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole34ir.jpg)
dogleg right, elevated tee. Tough tee shot, where you have to pick a point to cross the dune and trust your swing. You can take a much more conservative line and see your ball land, but that leaves a very long second shot. There are bunkers through the fairway on the left side which will catch drives that aren't faded or started far enough right.

4th - par 4
http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/4497/hole48aw.th.jpg (http://img519.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole48aw.jpg)
This is a classic short par 4, with elevated tee & green. If you lay up you are forced to bail out to the left where you can't see the flag and must wedge in over the buners and dune short-left of the green. If you're going to go for the green, you have to carry the large and very deep waste bunker directly in line with the green. From memory, it's probably around a 220-230m carry. I hit it on or close with driver 3/4 times. Scary tee shot, but if you like a challenge, then youll love this hole!! In the photo, you can just see the flag tucked in beside the tallest dune.

5th - par 3
Elevated tee, right up above the beach on a tall dune. Awesome view!! The walk from the 4th green to 5th tee is special.
http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/7932/walkfrom4to56lh.th.jpg (http://img389.imageshack.us/my.php?image=walkfrom4to56lh.jpg)
This is a long par 3. I think I hit everything from 5 iron to 3 wood. Key is to aim to the left side of the green as it funnels everything onto the green surface. This hole beat me soundly. I made par once I think and bogeyed it the rest.

6th - par 4
From the tee...
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/8122/hole68yt.th.jpg (http://img13.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole68yt.jpg)
From the green...
http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/6726/hole6fromgreen6sm.th.jpg (http://img382.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole6fromgreen6sm.jpg)
The 6th is a brutal par 4 from the back tees. There is a dune that cuts into the fairway from the right side about 200 metres off the tee. Into a headwind, you have to play out to the left of it. From there, it's a long iron or fairway metal to the green, all up hill. Downwind and from the middle tees, a good drive will carry the dune and make the hole a lot more manageable. The green is quite elevated and the dunes and rough pinch in pretty close on the front left (which is where you'll be coming in from if playing the tips!). Tough hole. The pic is from the green looking back down the fairway to the dune at the start of the landing area.

7th - par 3
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/2411/hole79hq.th.jpg (http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole79hq.jpg)
The 7th is perhaps their signature hole. It's a classic short par 4 with trouble everywhere! It's only a PW-9iron on a still day, but the green is domed with bunkers guarding the front and left sides. Over the back-right is the bail out area, but then it's a tricky up and down from a tightly mown swail area. I was fortunate to hit this green 3 outta 4 times. I managed a sand save from the bunker the other time, but wouldn't back myself to that too often. Very deep bunker, with a tiny domed green. Great hole!

8th - par 4
http://img13.imageshack.us/img13/1585/hole89zs.th.jpg (http://img13.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole89zs.jpg)
This hole should really be a par 5. I don't think either Jayson or me hit the green in two all weekend. It has a split fairway, ie. high side and lowside, separated by a 10 metre wide strip of rough. The high side gives a better view of the green, but is tough to hold. it's maybe 15 metres wide. The low side is wider, but means a longer shot in and hitting more up hill. Most people have to lay up on this hole, but the layup spot is some 80 metres back from the green, dramatically below the hole. The green is perched up in a saddle between two dunes and 15 metres off the front edge, the fairway disappears over the edge of a dropoff, with only a narrow walking path amidst the bushes etc.. I got up near the green with a fairway wood one time, but still made bogey. Tough hole. Has copped some stick form the architecture buffs, who claim it's too tricked up.

9th - par 4
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/8744/hole95vy.th.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole95vy.jpg)
Not a bad inward hole, with plenty of trouble off the tee left and right. Need to get the drive down over the ridge in the fairway to get a look at the green. There is a lot of trouble short-right of the green and anything left heads towards the beach. The second shot has to come in to a landing area short-left of the green that sets up laterally to the player. The green is fairly level though. The safe shot is front-left. Right is thick bushes, sand and bunkers.

10th - par 4
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/3731/hole102ok.th.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole102ok.jpg)
Long hole with a massive fairway. Easily as wide as a football field, with bunkers down the left side. The green is a lot higher than the fairway and it has a fales front, so club selection coming in is critical to hold the green. There are bunkers short and right of the green too. Great hole to get back in the groove on after the break at the turn. Awesome view from up at the green looking back to the clubhouse.

11th hole - par 5
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/2719/hole111nw.th.jpg (http://img33.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole111nw.jpg)
Great hole if you are confident with the driver. There is a deep pot bunker right in the driving line. If you can carry it or fade it around it (only possible with a tail wind), the ball will chase along the fairway quite a way, making this a possible 2-shotter. There is a sea of rough grass in direct line between you and the flag for the second shot, so if you have a crack, you gotta nut it. Otherwise it's a layup out to the right, short of a cluster of very deep bunkers. I caught the bunkers one time but made a sensational par. Another elevated green with a false front.

12th hole - par 4
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/5145/hole129bs.th.jpg (http://img8.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole129bs.jpg)
Here a juicy little par 4 that can temp you to have a go at. Not long, but anything slightly right off the tee is lost in a sea of grass. The smart play here is a long iron out to the left of the pot bunker and a wedge in. I tried that once, but couldn't help but take driver every other time. As long as you stay well left of the green, it's a fairly safe bail out as there is more room out there than you'd think from the tee. And if you hit it past the green, the chip shot is actually a little easier than coming in along the fairway. There's a swail in front of the green and deep bunkers off the right side. Great hole!

13th hole - par 3
http://img8.imageshack.us/img8/5964/hole136nv.th.jpg (http://img8.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole136nv.jpg)
Another long ar 3, not unlike the 5th. It plays from an elevated tee to a massive green with multiple levels. There are big bunkers guardign the right half and the dune comes in fairly tight along the left side. There is actually quite a big landing area short of the green on the left side which is hidden from the tee by a small dune. This is where you want to aim, as most people will be hitting their longest iron or a fairway metal. I think I hit 3 wood and 3 iron here. Only time I got close to the flag was when I landed it short left and chased it on. Scary green to putt on. Here's a pic of my lucky tee shot and Jayson's. It shows the contours of the green...
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/1208/hole13greenwithteeshots3xb.th.jpg (http://img42.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole13greenwithteeshots3xb.jpg)

14th hole - par 5
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/8320/hole143wo.th.jpg (http://img42.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole143wo.jpg)
I'm having a bit of trouble remembering this hole. I think it sets up fairly similar to the 11th hole. There is a pot bunker in play off the tee, but I think this hole was definitely a 3-shotter. If I think of anything else, I'll update this...

15th hole - par 4
http://img167.imageshack.us/img167/1750/hole15bu0.th.jpg (http://img167.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole15bu0.jpg)http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/450/hole15inletviewou2.th.jpg (http://img72.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole15inletviewou2.jpg)
An easy (relatively) par 4 with all the trouble visible from the tee. The sensible play is to play short-left of the fairway traps and have a middle iron in to the green. If you're game, you can sneak on up the right side of the trap and get quite close to the green. I succeeded in this once. The risk with this is obviously the dunes and inlet waiting to catch anything right of the perfect line. It's a beautiful spot, with the inlet along the right and the ocean off in distance. Hopefully this pic does it justice.

16th hole - par 3
from white tees...
http://img77.imageshack.us/img77/5333/hole16cb6.th.jpg (http://img77.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole16cb6.jpg)from black tees...
http://img444.imageshack.us/img444/2725/hole16fromhighteehb0.th.jpg (http://img444.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole16fromhighteehb0.jpg)Great par 3, with several tees. From the lower tees (whites) much of the green is hidden by a gnarly sand dune and waste bunker. The green slopes dramatically from left to right of the back of this dune and there is a swail short-right. Anywhere on the green is good! From the black tees, the view is better as it's much higher up the dune and the hole actually plays easier. Or at least it looks easier. I've attached pics form both tees...

17th hole = par 4
http://img9.imageshack.us/img9/6099/hole17highview3wm.th.jpg (http://img9.imageshack.us/my.php?image=hole17highview3wm.jpg)
Tough bugger of a hole, dogleg right, as it typically plays into the teeth of the NWérly wind. Deep bunkers, dunes and the beach run along the right side. Again the safe play is to play away from the traps, but the penalty is a long shot in. I got onto a couple of drives here and carried the fairway bunkers/junk, which made the hole a lot easier. However one time I landed right in the damn thing and was lucky to take a bogey. The green is elevated and has a steep drop-off on the left side into a valley. It's a very difficult up and down from there. Tough hole.

18th hole - par 4

Not that tough of a finishing hole. I think #17 leaves it for dead. The fairway is quite wide and feeds towards the green and from left to right. The dunes and beach come into play for a slice. I hit good drives here each time and had pretty simple short irons in. The green is wedged in amongst some dunes quite close to the club house, but completely hidded from view. It's not a very dramatic hole to finish on, given the scale of the rest of the course. There are some massive dunes out in front of the clubhouse, a further 150m on from the 18th green, which I think would have made for a better stadium setting. They could have brought some water in to play and made it a risk-reward par 5 or something more exciting. Still, it's a decent hole, which would shine elsewhere.

Hope you enjoyed this review. If you get the chance to play it.. do it! You won't regret it.

Sorry boys looks like i just couldn't wait (i'm in the area over summer, that's all) and i'll be having a crack at this fella Friday the 9th of January, can not wait!
You never know, i could still be an outside chance at a return visit if bargain airfares are snagged etc, but for now i'll have to take myself off this list. If anyone else happens to be in the area  on the 9th of Jan, come along..

Played it yesterday (Boobyalla tees - 2nd to back tees). Absolutely stunning course, in gorgeous weather conditions (perhaps a half to one club breeze). The superlatives people have used about this course are true.

Highlights - the whole thing.
Rolled in a 20m putt for birdie on the 2nd.
Love the greens and surrounds. Putts that can break 3 different ways in 15m. How it's potentially possible to play 3 or 4 different approach shots (with varying trajectory, direction or length) and still end up in a similar position just by the way the contours have been shaped.
Dion, I can say the 14th is a 2 shot par 5. (woo hoo).

My mate (has played about 10 times in his life) got stuck in the left hand bunker on 7. Took him 6 shots to get out. I threw a ball in there for the fun of it and took 4 to get out.
Lost 5 balls for the day. Still carded an 88/75 (5 over ACR)

Used their hire clubs (extra $30) and found them to be pretty decent.

I'd love to be coming back in April for the trip (but won't be). Those of you who are first timers are in for the biggest treat.

cool westy. What did you think of the 4th? 8th? 12th?

4th - I don't like the little pine tree on the left side in the rough about 100m out. (I took 3 iron off the tee and tugged it way left.) That aside, love the green. The bit of green tucked in behind the rough over on the left side is a really cool little surprise. As an aside, I didn't aim for the green here. Aimed several metres right of the green and the ball just funnelled down off the slope and ended up near the hole. That is so much fun!

8th - Think I hooked my 2nd shot into Bass Strait. Totally misjudged my 3rd (4th) shot to the green and hung it just on top of the valley about 20m short of the green. Awfully tough hole.

12th - Played this hole like crap and still only walked off with a bogey. Would like to play it again but play it properly next time.

Got off the 15th with a par despite driving into the bunker in the middle of the fairway.

PS - If you like the tee shots on 16th, do yourself a favour and climb up to the short tee, enjoy the view and hit a provisional from there just for the fun of it! It's the best tee of the lot!

played this a few years back - in winter!! My balls were frozen - well atleast the greens were - I remember teeing off first of the day and sending a nice high wedge into the green and then "CRACK" - yep the green was still frozen - Beautiful course - highly recommend it also as it is out of the way - loved it

Great time of the year to be down there. You can get some really nice stable weather patterns. I was there just on 12 months ago and the weather was awesome. The course even more so. The meals and clubhouse and service were first class. Loved having a chip and putt before dinner then wandering back sated to sit on my porch with a glass of red. Extremely relaxing.

Enjoy the trip.

The new course must be getting close as the old man is getting a preview next month. Should mean all you northeners will have twice the reason to visit.

Hey mate I will be in Melbourne this time next year for police golf champs and was thinking of trying to organise Ozgolfers for a long weekend at Barny for after the champs finishes.

Should find out the dates in 2 or 3 weeks time. You reckon we can work something out?

I was thinking 2 or 3 days ... not sure how my old mans legs would handle walking 36 holes 2 days in a row.

sounds good mate. I'll need a year to get a leave pass after this weekend's trip, but I reckon we should start spitballing for a March 2011 trip. I'll possible bring the family again and stay with the Launceston relo's.

Great stuff. Its the seeds of a plan. My dates will be pretty fixed though. I will drive the green machine to Melbourne as we are playing all over the gaff...Kingston Heath, RM etc then leave it and fly to Launceston and get up to Barny.

If I work things right I should have at a few courses on the way home...or be maybe golfed out - if that can happen.

Is there anythiing else I should know? We're arriving at Barny on Thursday evening and staying both Thurs and Fri nights. I'm only playing 18 holes in the morning on Friday as the wife wants to visit some of the Tamar valley wineries in the afternoon. Anything else we should see while we're in that area of the island?

Go to Pipers Brook and taste all their Pinot's...then buy some and drink them.

Go for a walk along the beach at low tide. Very nice.

And let me say after you have played it once, 18 holes is not enough
