Wow ... that's almost LDA clubhead speed. He certainly has impressive lag coming into impact. He's giving his left ankle a workout though ... Could do some injury to the ligaments.

Pete. I can see why you tend to hang your drives out to the right. Have a look at your chickenwing in the followthrough. Compare with Bris and Nathan who have their lead elbows tucked and connected. Compare your second photo with the following one of Bris. See how your left elbow is off your chest? As a result, you can see how your clubface is much more open (face looking up) compared to that of Bris (toe pointing up).

Tezza, that's pretty impressive shutter speed. Especially with the lack of light. Not a hint of blurring. Awesome. 8)

Nice wedge...... I wonder what it is

I admit I'm a Powder puff when it comes to SS but its my smash factor that helps me at 1.65 (last launchie) its very high from what I have been told. Tour players and LD guys are about 1.4.

If only I didn't like chicken...

I'm working on it.

BrisVegas
19th January 2006, 08:51 PM
1.65 smash factor is extraordinary! Is that even possible? I thought the theoretical maximum was 1.50?? I've never heard of anyone having more than that. Then again I've really only hear the commentators talking about Appleby and how high his was at 1.50. I'm sure there are prob guys on BSG who'd be over 1.50 though! But then, everyone on BSG carries it 300 yards!

peter_rs

Hend is 1.52
Bubba watson 1.6

I have read the theory was 1.83 Base on a legal club.

peter_rs

smash figures are subjective and can fudged if the lanucher is out.

smash factor does not mean distance. SF +SS = DISTANCE

I have a larger value but hend has 20mph SS on me.

Also his SF I found was based on only avg speeds too, so he has more to burn

Smash Factor is (for what it's worth  ) :-

Ball Speed / Clubhead Speed, ie. 150 / 100 = 1.5

here's the first article i found on google. There are plenty more...

Hend SS=128 BS =194 SF= 1.52
bubba SS=127 BS=203 SF=1.6 (6.75* 44" driver)
me SS=105 BS=170 SF =1.65 (drive fitting sessions, results could be wrong but I like them  )

What machine was used? Vector?

Theoretical limit using a standard driver head with COR of .83 and a standard ball is approx 1.5. If you can get anywhere near this limit, you are doing extremely well.

When I was in the States, I had a go on the Golfsmith's Vector machine. One reading gaving me a smash factor close to 1.5. However, the Vector is known for getting the clubhead speed wrong.

Here's the formula for calculating ball speed (derived from collision equation and the law of conservation of momentum):

v = U * (1 + e) / (1+(m/M))

where

v = velocity of ball just after impact
U = velocity of clubhead just before impact
m = mass of the ball (usually around 45 grams)
M = mass of the clubhead (usually around 200 grams)
e = coefficient of restitution or COR (legal limit 0.83)

You do the maths and you'll see that under ideal conditions, head on collision between the ball and the clubhead would yield a smash factor of 1.5. Given the fact that even the driver head as some loft which produces backspin, you won't be able to achieve this limit ... UNLESS:

a) you are using an illegal driver with COR that is greater than 0.83
b) you are using a light weight ball
c) you are using a heavy driver head.

Hmmm ... I might ask them to check whether your driver is legal next time I play you ...

Maybe he has heavier balls than we think

Kurt(?) Barnes was on the launch monitor as the QAS as well recently and managed 131mph swing speed. And he's generally considered to be freakishly long. Nathan's gonna cause quite a stir if/when he makes it onto the tour. I wish him well. I could watch that effortless swing of his all day!

peter_rs
20th January 2006, 10:34 AM
It was the dead solid sytems, in a fitting for a r7 using maxifli black max balls

I have used the Vector it reports the same club head but a ball speed around 160.

MTB thats my "golf swing" with a stock driver...... I got more.... But if you were move flexable you would see my swing is not hard to do or take that much energy at all.

Jono it was a very simple model that does not tell the whole truth.

My values are probably bullsh!t but are repeatable acrosss machines and I was not the only one with a smash value of 1.5

peter_rs
20th January 2006, 12:01 PM
Its like saying the model for carry based on SS is accurate (In the link BV posted).

Bottom line:.If your swingspeed is 100 MPH (a good men’s “stiff” swing speed) you probably won’t carry the ball more than 220 yards and almost certainly won’t carry it over 230. If your swingspeed is 90 MPH (men’s “regular”) you should get a blood test if you regularly carry your drives over 210.

carry= 2.2 * SS in mph.  (2.3 for good players)

So I can only carry the ball 231 yards (211 m) you would even be flying me.

Oh and some one tell Scot Hend he cann't hit it that far (well as far as the stats say) because his carry is only 294 yards (268m)

you can find a theory for anything.

and I need to be tested for something

what about old school "smashed factor", i thought it was calculated on body weight and ABV :D

Jono
20th January 2006, 12:48 PM
Pete,

The equation I posted is a derived one from the collision equation. It's based on the law of conservation of momentum. According to this equation, 1.5 smash factor is achieved under IDEAL conditions. Zero loft, no backspin, no sidespin, center hit, etc. So you or I will never achieve this 1.5 SF if we are using 200g driver head with 0.83 COR and a 45 gram ball.

The carry distance forumla you refer to is a very approximate one based on empirical data.

The two examples are very different.

From what I've seen of your swing, I'd estimate your clubhead speed a bit higher than 105mph and your ball speed a bit less than 160mph. Have you had a go on a radar launch monitor? Zelocity is an example. On the whole, I think these are better at estimating clubhead speed and ball speed compared to camera devices such as Vector. The camera device is great for measuring spin rate.

peter_rs
20th January 2006, 02:34 PM
I know my example was an extreme but it was a quick example of a simple model, that some believe is true.

The Dead shot system is a laser based system. It monitors the ball and club head as they pass through a "sheet" of laser light.

I would think they are better then radar.

My avg clubhead speed is 110-105 but I can push it 125mph.

Equation is only a approximate. http://probablegolfinstruction.com/golf_club_longest_golf_ball.htm
