Every house I've owned I have always tried to grow my own golf green
My first was in Kambalda WA (sand green area) it was aprox 5 x 5 - 25m2
Second one was Rochdale, aprox 50m2 with bunker
My latest one is in mackay and is 85m2 with bunker and is the best one yet
Anyone had any success trying

It's hard enough to maintain greens on a course little lone at home

I would argue near impossible to have a decent real green down south, up north is a different story where you can get away with a decent couch without to many issues

Enjoy

Spanner, in some ways it is easier at home.
With a good mower, a good starting base and drainage, a similar grass in any area and the most important thing TIME
For me it's more like a hobby, I hand water and mow every day
The thing about having it at home is the lack of traffic and the complaints from members (:
I can handle the complaints from family members

I'm thinking of getting an artificial green - have two GSD's out the back so the real stuff has no chance.
Titleist got his done and seems to look pretty good, and easy to maintain!

I would be interested in charting how your putting improves now that you have it, have you noticed any improvement?

Very nice titlelist, I didn't realise your thread was running
It is a great time of the year up north to go out of an evening and have some fun putting
The putting will improve ;)

The guys who did it are based in FNQ.....
Yep, i get out there most evenings with the kids, beer i hand and muck around.
Dont know if my putting and chipping will improve but my waistline might expand!
;)

WTF Spanner? Plastic greens huhhh? For others who have played or watched a round on Melbourne's sand belt courses the greens you see have most likely to have been built by him. Must be the "life improvement time" of the day.
Then again in FNQ its not hard to grow the short stuff just be ready for lots of chemicals. Is the reason for a green in back yard is that Mrs found out where the shed is?

I have been toying with this idea for a while now.. and like you said its more of a hobby thing.. only problem is my boxer will probably be worse
than my 3 year old on it!! and I need to buy a roller as most of the best greens that grow down south are bent grass

Yeah dogs and greens do not mix ...

Yes Madboarder, plastic for a back yard in Melbourne and Sydney anyway

It is near impossible to build a bent grass green for home and expect to have a practice putt on greens rivaling RM or the Heath.

The only one I have seen work is at a truck drivers family compound at Portsea, it's Santa Ana and has a team of grounds dudes to keep it in shape.
