View Full Version : My new backyard putting green!

My small backyard got trashed by our new puppy.
What was once lush green grass and a nice flower bed turned into a barren wasteland after we bought Roxy, our Dalmatian pup!
So i had an idea, rather than just returf and plant new flowers i proposed to the missus a backyard putting green.
It would have multiple benefits i told her, maintenance free, very tidy and looks great year round, the dog would like it better and of course i and the kids would enjoy it immensely!
So, i bit the bullet and went ahead and got some quotes.
For those that have done it there are really only 4 major companies that do these properly Aus wide.
I got all grass samples from all of them first , then got guys to come measure up and quote.
The company i eventually went with, i got to come last as i really liked their product the best, so gave them last shot.
They have only 1 other green i Sydney so where keen on looking after me to help them with their business.
Needless to say they bettered all quotes and where very accommodating to what i wanted.
As you can see, she really did a number on the yard, here's the before pics:

Captain Nemo

any elevation on greens?

There are subtle contours, yes.
Back left along fence (looking from the first pic above) is uphill and cambered.
The back hole, behind pool wall in second pic has a nice slope as well.
Grain runs from back shed to my deck, so putts from there run faster, and a touch downhill.

OMG that looks brilliant.

We have two very destructive German Shepherds and had to pay a handsome amount to get grass re-laid after they destroyed most of it. Well its been a year and they've managed to destroy half of the new grass already, am seriously thinking of going with something like this.

How "dog-proof" is it? Is it easy to clean up if the dog uses it for its toilet?

Any chance you can PM me the name of the company you used?

Gents, ive been given the all clear from the "powers that be" and here are the guys:
http://www.supremegreens.com.au/
For those who know of Cameron Strachan, or read his blogs he's heavily involved with the product and had a massive green setup on his property in the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
His green features heavily in the promo videos etc...
Im not going to diss the other companies, but the green product of these guys is far superior to the other samples that i got.
Prices where all pretty much the same.
This one cost me $4,100
Fell free to pm /ring me/come over if you want more details etc....
Got to go, the green is calling me.... :)
Peace Titty

Very dog proof, they glue/nail down all edges.
Its very easy to clen, the poo just sits on top, easy to scoop up!
As for we, it drains, they just told me to hose it down every now and then and no problems...

Hi Titleist,

Did you go with the company's "putting green" option as opposed to their normal green option, which appears to be more expensive and marketed to people who want to chip as well as putt? Just trying to get some quotes done up and was wondering if there's a huge difference.

Also, any dog damage update, or is it still holding up quite nicely?

Yes, i went with the more exy "putting green" option as i can hit chips onto it and it checks up just like a normal green.
Its 100% dog proof, very very good.

I doubt a concrete base would accept chips and pitches.

I just finished the quoting process and am probably a day away from making a decision. Mine will be in a central location but the area isn't actually used for anything accept weekly mowing. It'll be 3.5m X 6.5m, 3 cups with fringe grass.

You could do it with concrete, just set up formwork in the shape you want and put height pins for all your undulations, so when you pour you make sure the Crete hits the top of all your pins which will give you your heights.
If you were to do this, if you ordered from a concrete plant get them to throw half or a full dose of retarder in the mix so it will take ages to set so it gives you heaps of time to get your heights right (retarder normally gives you an extra couple hours), or if hand mixing you can buy the retarder to put in yourself.
Once it's done you can lay 10 or 20mm of riversand on top then the turf so you could chip on it aswell if you wanted to. It would work out cheaper using concrete too.
Feel free to ask any more questions.

I've spoken to Cameron at Supreme. Just about to send off the final plan for a DIY kit quote. The problem being is they cant travel and install unless the green is (???) >90m2. Seeing that mine will be a touch over 22m2 he offered to quote me on DIY only. This isnt really a big issue even though I would prefer a pro install it. He mentioned that their head office is actually in Cairns but will be moving down his way this year. I have to say he is extremely helpful and keen as to help. I've had a few other quotes from different suppliers and the one that came today was from Townsville and offered to install it next week as part of his quote. They're an agent for a Sydney based supplier.

I think my wife is 98% on board at this stage, less heading to the course for short game practice was my tactic. Will have to wait and see what Cam comes back with. But like I said, cheers mate.

I'm still thinking about a putting green for my backyard, I just do things in little steps, when I have time.

Here's a photo of a little mockup that I've just done. I could be convinced to make it more of a kidney shape than an L, and the pins are just a rough guess, without considering where I might put the fringe grass. I've measured it out to be about 20 square metres in the L formation. The area without the grass is about 15 (6.4m x 2.3m).

How do you think the surface would hold up with a dog that continually runs at full sprint across it? The moron runs back and forth from one side gate around the house to another side gate any time there is movement out the front. The hose covers it a bit, but you can see a groove mark in the bottom left that the dog has worn.

A bloke I know at my club (lives over in Georges Hall/Revesby, I think), did a DIY of these - an artificial grass (not sure what type or where from) 5m x 5m putting green in his back yard with a couple of holes and I think with some subtle undulations and the whole thing cost him around $4K. He said it was a pain in the arse laying the foundations (road base etc), but reckons he's pretty happy with it...

I doubt you would need it, plus there's the drainage factor....

Shane788
16th May 2014, 07:04 PM
I'm purely talking cost wise and you would only need 50-60mm of concrete so it would be cheap. I don't think drainage would be too bad as everything would be falling so it would just follow concrete off the edge.
If you had 30-40mm of bedding sand on top I think you'd achieve similar results just might save a little.

Captain Nemo
16th May 2014, 07:09 PM
I'm not sure, mines only sand based compacted.
Pretty sure concrete would be more expensive.
Ask the guys who have been on mine, it's fairly firm!

Shane788
16th May 2014, 07:22 PM
Oh ok I thought it was all compacted roadbase with final layer of compacted sand. $300 of concrete would get you a 40m2 green that's why I thought of it because roadbase gets expensive once you keep compacting it to nothing.
When you say firm do you think you could get a similar feel doing it this way?

AndyP
14th August 2014, 05:44 PM
The installer finished up at 3pm today and will be back in the morning to do a couple of things to finish it off. At the moment it is a sanded green that rolls slowly. I think I've already conquered it though.

Titty, the level of the green is a little bit above the cups at the moment. With the grass being tucked into the cups, it makes the cups play larger than what they would normally because if it gets near the edge, it will drop in. Would I expect this to settle down to play like a normal cup?

Andy, did you follow my mock-up, did you put a little swale in?I let the installer decide what to do in the end and forgot about the swale. It falls away a bit towards the cup near the water heater.

After I initially promised myself to get on it for at least 10 minutes a day, I haven't had a putt on it for a week. It certainly isn't a fast green, but it probably isn't that far off my home course greens.

There are a few things that I am not happy with though.
1. The sunken cups that allow any ball near the edge of the hole to drop in.
2. One putt from cup to cup has the ball moving in three different directions over the course of the roll. It's not realistic.
3. There are a few grooves in the green that upset the line.

Maybe I need to attack it with a roller, like Titty did.
