I'm willing to negotiate a mercy rule. 3/2 the heaviest defeat that is allowed to be inflicted. If one of us gets up by more they give a wink. If the opposition replies with a wink then the deal is on and we coast to get to a 3/2 margin.

Deal?

As an aside, I'm giving you how many shots? I'm off 3.

Geez, you've jumped on that mercy deal quickly. You nervous?

You'll be handing me 15 shots. My best for the year is 83 at Cott and worst a 112 at Araluen (my last Ozgolf start). Golflink spread is 88 to 97 in the same period.

Just trying to be a gracious Southern citizen. The deal expires pretty quickly though so if it's not accepted, it's no holds barred.

By comparison, my best for the year is 69 at Dartmoor and a pair of 83's at Portland.

And if anchors are used I'll be off 2.

Some of these games are tasty matchups, but there's no doubt that this one should be described as a 'pasty' matchup.

What's mubbaban's anchor? Yep. For those that don't have caps, they will be playing off 4 shots lower than their assigned weekend cap, to keep things level. This just got a lot more fun for them :/.If we put the Nully Cup on the line in the final pairing, which we should for fun, we will have to revert to either 3/4 or full caps for the final group, whatever was used last year.

First group eh? I reckon I might pull "do an Ashes" on the first tee due to nerves :smt087 I hate having an audience for my tee shots. Worst ever was having to tee off in front of about 15 guys on a buck's day outing, played through on the 10th and promptly topped my drive 30m into the left bushes  Anything past the ladies is a win for that opening shot!

First group's not so bad though, when we finish we can be a gallery for the remaining players, to cheer and jeer as appropriate. I want to see JC and SMS duke it out :) If TV has shown me anything, I think we need to shout "get in the hole!!!" as they tee off on par 4s and 5s.

Play singles matchplay, and then also 4BBB matchplay. Lowest member of the group (ie. me) gives the difference of handicap in shots to everyone else.

So I give shots to Yoss (9 if he's off 12), you (15) and Jackson (27).

Come on Jackson!!!! No hero shots, play it safe and the match is yours for the taking! Exactly. The cut is tricky but the holes are not hand grenades by any means. Keep it in play. Take 3w or irons off the tee and then iron up the middle if need be. Pars and bogeys could win lots of holes.

Maybe id just doesn't want to take them to the range and have this happen:

From one of them crazy US forums

Had a crazy one today at local range. Kid (approx. 10 years old) and mom show up at range, kid has a youth set of your clubs (mostly woods). They pick a stall about 6 stalls away from where I'm at so mom can sit on a bench, drink her coffee and watch.

I'm practicing, so only randomly paying attention to them and notice the kid hits some nice shots but mostly shanks. I then hear mom start to coach / yell at him that he's not concentrating, wasting her time, etc which gets him angry and he starts swinging harder (I can hear the shanks bouncing off the metal railing between each stall). She gives one last rant and out of corner of my eye I notice he's addressed the ball, but facing her not the range. Next thing I hear him ask her is "What am I doing wrong?", I hear the club head hit the ball and I hear her scream.

Luckily he hit her in the arm and not the face, she's crying, covered in coffee and he's just staring at her with a completely indifferent look on his face. I call over the range staff, run over to make sure she's okay. She was saying her arm was broke but I don't think it was. The range staff took over and they eventually calmed her down, she refused to let them call an ambulance and they left.

I couldn't get the image of the kid just staring, he never even apologized. The scene reminded me of the Omen movie when Damien watched the sister fall through the ice.

Comparing Chequers at 110 to The Vines (Lakes) 126.
Currently my 12 HC is based at the Vines, would that mean when I play at Chequers, my HC would be about 10?

Does not make sense as I deem Chequers to be more difficult.

Pieface
25th September 2013, 07:43 PM
Is that due to condition or layout Id?

The slope is kinda like the bogey folders view of the course. If the vines has a bunch of hazards at 180-200 off the tee it is going to look harder comparatively for the bogey golfer as those hazards are out of play for lower markers who will theoretically carry them with ease.

Lord knows I seem to end up in the sand more often at the vines than anywhere else it seems!

G.K
25th September 2013, 07:59 PM
What are are referring to regarding bunkers at 180-200 is exactly what I was faced with at SH last week.

I'm the same as you PF, if there's a fairway bunker at around that distance, I'm almost guaranteed to find it!

Holy hell, I would be off about 37 playing the blues at the cut with slope included, if I understand correctly.

How hard is this course compared to the ellenbrook course at the vines which is where I've played mostly?

Depends what you're like when it's blowing a gale. Aside from the wind, choppers like me find losing balls in the dunes the biggest diff. Bunkers are easier than Vines. More elevation change to deal with compared to Vines, plus a few blind tee shots.

Chequers has the doglegs around 190m and is heavily tree-lined. The Greens are postage-stamp sized that are elevated and if you miss the fairway, it's tough to advance the ball forward. At Chequers, you don't need driver as that could get you in trouble. Placement is paramount.

I have discounted the conditioning as it has been improving. Another two years and it will be a gem.

So I understand normal 4BBB handicapping where you reduce the lowest marker down to scratch but how will it work with also a singles matchplay?

I'm assuming if the starting handicaps are TommyG 9 vs Jeffo 13, and Bergsey 19 vs Tiger 16

Then the strokes given in a normal 4bbb would be TommyG (scratch) vs Jeffo 4 and Bergsey 10 vs Tiger 7.

Correct?

Edit: just noticed they have a matchplay index so assume we will use that instead of stroke index

Johnny Canuck

Yeah yeah, I'm not sure whether others knew it was best stableford score I.e. Hole is halved if both can't score any stableford points Wipes shouldnt cancel. In cases of bad holes, the lowest net score should win the hole. Ie. Someone 3 jacking for double should not halve with someone who never even got off the tee. This should not come into play too often, but it is something to consider, stableford scores can be used for ease of scoring, but at the end of the day, match play is stroke. Common sense should also prevail with hole concessions. If you are going to drop a moose and your opponent 6, puck up the ball.

You've pretty much got it mate. In the individual matches TommyG will give Jeffo 4 shots and Tiger will give you 3.

In the 4B TommyG gets none while giving you, his partner 10, while giving away 4 & 7 to Jeffo & Tiger.

Unless they decide to play Stableford 4B match play in which case basically everyone uses there normal shots where allocated and highest points wins the hole.

In essence, yes. Stableford scoring is generally used for ease of calculations.

You would think and hope that most holes won't have to beyond a stableford score to get a result. It would also be easier and less confusing for the rookies to play off full caps and not reduce the lowest marker to zero (less wipe situations also).

In essence, yes. Stableford scoring is generally used for ease of calculations. I reckon keeping the scoring to stroke would be a good move. A double or triple may win a hole even on a par 5, particularly if a player has one or two shots on the hole over their opponent. It makes it simple for everyone walking to each tee, knowing that they need to either have the best score on the hole to win, or finish two better to win the hole, etc. Just my two cents.

Sounds like the slope rating makes sense then Id.

As you play better golf (handicap lowers) you do not find Chequers to decrease in difficulty as much as the Vines courses. Therefore there is not as much slope differential.

The lower marker doesn't have more of an advantage at Chequers so the worse golfer's base handicap remains a good reflection of the difference in skill levels. In fact at chequers a higher marker will give a stroke back to the lower markers in the field to represent the difficulties that each golfer is forced to contend with.

Looks like 18 and down hold all their strokes at Chequers and 19+ will give a stroke back...

It seems a bit counter intuitive but that is how I'm understanding the system.

idgolfguy
26th September 2013, 10:45 AM

Don't stress on the scores. While we mask it as our own little comp, there is really only 2 blokes who take it very seriously. Everyone else just goes to play some good courses, and have a good time.

If you shoot 130 or 80 - no one will care all that much, just enjoy yourselves.

Who are those 2 blokes Lubes?

I know JC is one, because it still burns him how he lost a 4 hole lead.

2-4 shots above HC is a good median.

True. Just giving a bit of :smt064

If I can play within 5 shots of my cap at the cut I will be over the moon.

Makes me feel better. Just

Golfshot says my scores at Hamersley (I started playing early 2012, scores go back in time) have been 44, 51, 47, 52, 48, 54, 51, 45, 50, 53, 53, 55, 52, 54, 54. Consistent(ly crap). I think all the 40s have been on the front 9 which I hardly ever play, we tend to tee off from 10 as it's less busy, but my scores tend to be higher. Scoring average +29.7 for last 20 "rounds"
I'd like to play 18 there one day to see what I shoot. Only $25 for 18 on weekends....

Never mind have a meeting at 2.30 to 3.30. Won't be available till after that.

Have they started their Twilight deal yet?

Teeing off hopefully 3:20pm at the latest, I reckon it'll be busy (thus slow) as it's a beautiful day and rain will have kept some people away.

And their twilight deal is on all year round, just the start time varies. I think it's currently $9 for as many holes as you can play after 4:30pm, but you can't pre-pay so you've got to line up, then pay, then run to whichever tee is free. Only did it once and never again!

That's my attitude all the time Rubes :) I accept I'm not very good at this game, but I've never let that stop me playing other things I'm crap at but stil enjoy!
I've set myself a (probably unrealistic) target to try and break 100 each round, but I've never played a course harder than the Vines off the back tees so I know I'm likely to balloon out. But as I said, I haven't had a long weekend off from parent duties since I had kids, I'm just out for a good fun weekend.

I'm still happy to play you mate. After all, there was a lot of charity money on it.

Hell, it'll even be to your advantage that your not watching me pour in birdies and pars and you can just concentrate on your own game.
