The OZgolf year starts on the completion of the OZgolf Champs, so he may not be.

Moe Norman
4th January 2006, 09:49 PM
is it based purely on handicap reduction?

AndyP
4th January 2006, 09:56 PM
No.

Fishman Dan
4th January 2006, 11:38 PM
You take the top 5 handicap reducers, get 3 different pre/post methods of working out a magical number, and then ask Blake who nominates someone from left-field for the prize.

Jarro
5th January 2006, 01:27 AM
got it right there Fishy

Bruce

I wish my updates would start showing up in Golflink.

I wanna confirm if I dropped 3.2 or 3.6 last week.

BrisWesty

Whichever one it is, that's a top effort Bruce. Congrats

Can we have a separate section for us guys that hardly ever play ? Add to that a wife/kids factor.

Using this method , I would have won Most Improved by a country mile last year.

Got my first handicap reduction for the year   and also first time my handicap does not have a 2 in it  8) Down to 19.1.

Bruce
8th January 2006, 08:23 PM
Hmm... 1 card in - but it's the second one.

I hope I don't have to organise some sort of hand update from our handicapper. He isn't super tech literate.

Moe Norman
8th January 2006, 09:10 PM
i came in .2 for the first time in ages this weekend.

Keza_G
8th January 2006, 09:50 PM
I'd like to niminate Scotty_G

Date Comp. Gross Nett Old Hcp New Hcp
26/11/05 Stroke 75 70 4.6 4.7
10/12/05 Stroke 70 65 4.7 4.1
4/1/06 Stab 64 46 4.1 3.0

So in 3 games he has gone from 5 (4.7 exact) to 3 (3.0 exact)....

Cheers

Gone from 14.6 to 13.4 since the champs for a reduction of 8.9%. That's nowt compared to going from 4.7 to 3.0. How good is that!

Keza_G

Can I be included in this one now...

I was 8.4 on 11/11/2005 and am now 6.4 at 19/01/2006...

so in 2 months I have dropped 2.0 strokes....

Goal for 2006 is 5 or better...

good work Steve! I remember the first time i saw you play at North Lakes I assumed you were off a 4-5 hcap. When I found out you were a 10 I was shocked. You'll get it down and stay there, you're a good enough player. 8)

Your golflink indicates 6.2 to 6.5. I guess this is part of the Robina stuff-up. I'll change it.

You've still got a bit of work to do for the Bradman award.

Moe Norman
17th February 2006, 01:28 PM
AndyP, my golf link has less than 5 scores in it.

it should have about 200 as I've been on Golf Link since it was created and at uni I regulalry played 3 comp games a week.

not sure what happened, but my scores dissappeared when I was on 6.4 and I dropped to 6.2 when I switched to Robina. Technically without the stuff up I'd be on 6.7.

You'd have to wear a skirt to get to a 40 h/cap - max at NB is 32 - there's still time to lodge some 100+ scores

Some clubs allow men to have a 32 handicap, which is a home course only cap. When they play anywhere else it would be off 27 max.

If you are in improving golfer, there should be no question. However if your some one standing still, this might be an opportunity you may never see again.

I am at a standstill point at the moment but any day now the downward movement will start again so I guess I will lose this opportunity for now as I could really work hard and maybe get to B Grade captain I guess.
Hey anything can happen, who would have thought 2 months ago I would have had Brain sugery and recovered in this amount of time. I might sound cocky but I have just beaten the hardest thing I have ever encountered so anything golf throws at me is like a speed bump.

Talking of ad hoc's my club will not add them any more. In January/early febuary Jim and I played at Wallacia here in outer Sydney suburbs. It was my second game back from the brain op and played really well shooting 40 points. Anyway knowing the result may not get back to my club I asked if I could take the result back for the Wallacia club, they said no worries. I did so giving my club all the details CCR result etc. They then told me that they would not update my Golflink because they did not want me to drop out of C grade as we were running out of C grade players for the metropolitan Pennants. They also mentioned that it would be good if I could try and stay above 19.5 until July. I wish I had adhoc scores in my golflink.

Fishman Dan
4th May 2006, 10:14 AM
What did you do about that? That's blatently ripping off the system Grant. The AGU handicap is about your ability, not building the best team for the club.

Question - why would you stay at a C-grade handicap for a club that you despise and hate so much?

The sooner you find a real club the better mate.

Well if you look at my games since then I would still have been a C-Grade player as with all the **** in the club it has really started to affect my game, I got DQ'd last game for my card not having my handicap on it. My so called partner forged my sig and placed the card in the box. I could do nothing about it, and as I think of myself as an honset golfer that plays by the rules I had to wear the DQ.

For Metropolitan Pennants here is Sydney you need one Andy. For example, to play C grade this year I must not go below 19.5 between 1st January & 31st May this year.

So if you go below 19.5, you must pull out an be replaced in the team?

Back in my junior days we used to play a pennants and an interclub championship. The interclub was just pennants for those of us not gifted enough to be off low numbers. Players 1 & 2 had a handicap between 5-10, players 2 & 3 were off 11-18 and player 5 had to be over 19. Your handicap was only check at the first round.

I started the season off 22 and 4 months later in final I had come down to 18 only to come up against a guy off 13  . He had started the season on 20 and lost 7 shots in 4 months.

I was happy to only go down 2&1.

When I first got my hc it was 24. Played in a 4bbb with an old dude off 27. I dropped from 24 to 20 that game after getting on the card 14 times. Two of his scores were 4/4 and would you believe we came second.

I was told that about 12 times will be good for handicapping.

It's only going to drop 0.2 per shot once it's under 11.5.

And how do they account for the fact that you have been technically playing off the wrong handicap in some of these comps?

senecio
23rd May 2006, 10:13 PM
bugger.

I was on the card 13 times for 31 points so I should be ok as my partner was on the card 5 times for 18 points. They needn't know that I made par on all of those 5 holes.

That's where it gets difficult. I don't think anyone's handicap should be affected in a best ball.

Its possible that you and your partner could both shoot the lights out, but only one of you will lose strokes just because you happened to hole out first more often.

For this reason, my regular best ball partner and I have started to alternate who's score we record when we share a hole, irrespective of who holes out first. The last two times we've played we came out at smack on 9 holes a piece.

you only get handicapped in 4bbb at the handicappers discretion. He either cares or doesnt care.

nope haven't hit a practise ball of any kind for two years or more, no lessons, infact never had a one on one lesson at all, only few group clinic's as a junior some 20 plus years ago. No pre-round practise other a dozen or so putts on the practise green and a hand full of chips, essentaillly I just turn up and play once week, mostly, sometimes sat and sun, sometimes I'm on sometimes I'm not, just go with the flow.

I however have no doubt it has alot to do with the fact that I mainly play at Woodford, it's not a hard course, not long, and I am so familiar and comfortable with it (one track wonder ) , that any shot on the course I know exactly what can and can't hurt me, I essentailly can stand over every shot with no doubt in my mind over the consenquences of what a bad shot may leave me with (no fear), put me on any other course then the doubt is there and that leads to bad scores.:-s

Its not that much golf, once or twice a weekend. But because of work I have had no range time so I spend the weekend working on my swing.

I'm working on wedges, putting & a game plan. I haven't had a 40+ putt round for awhile and chiped in twice on sunday.

I'm a work in progress I just have to get it all together in a comp round. I think it is working because on most holes I now get a putt for par.

Well that woudn't be hard. At this rate, you'll be a better golfer than me next year. I guess what I was asking was do you and shaz compete to get to a certain hcap first? Or do you have other goals?

I've changed my mind, I'm not going to do a poll. I think it's best if people post who they think the most improved for this OZgolf year (from Champs05 to Champs06) is and why. Feel free to give yourself a boost, if that's what you think.
From these posts, a decision will be made.

First, here's a few stats that may help with your nomination, but in no way determine the winner. As I said last year, "you may take into consideration the way they went about their improvement, or they may have continued on from previous improvement, or they may have only got back to an old handicap and shouldn't be considered."

Here's a few of the potential candidates (I've only supplied golflinks if they are available on the forum):

Ducky - Obtained his handicap at the end of July, starting off 15.0. In just a few months of practice and playing, the cap has been slashed eight shots to 7.0. The initial handicap may have been inflated a little bit, but he is now starting to play consistently to single figures. Should be more improvement to come.

CobraSS - Dropped the handicap from 9.6 to 6.8, after reaching a low of 6.4. Played 2 outstanding rounds of 1 under par at Woodford during the year.
http://www.golflink.com.au/HandicapHistory.aspx?golflink_no=4132900306

senecio - Dropped from 9.6 to 7.2, after hitting a low of 6.9. Started lessons this year and the results showed.
http://www.golflink.com.au/HandicapHistory.aspx?golflink_no=4110301358

billybaub - In to 12.4 from 16.1 and was at 20 in April 05.

peter_rs - From 23.4 to 18.1 over the course of this OZgolf year. Has made a real effort to work on his golf game this year and get the handicap down. Another golfer, who I'd expect to have even more of a drop in handicap in the future. There's also the infamous thread about Pete's way to improvement (long overdue for a bump).
http://www.golflink.com.au/HandicapHistory.aspx?golflink_no=4051802413

Grunt - Not so much this year, but over the last couple of years the handicap has come in from 27.5 to 17.7, it was 21.5 at the start of this OZgolf year. That's a pretty hefty drop.
http://www.golflink.com.au/HandicapHistory.aspx?golflink_no=2090102526

http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/2305/improvedlb5.jpg

2005 - Courty: http://www.ozgolf.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1773&page=10
2006 - ???????

The winner gets the Most Improved curse. Both of the last two winners have higher handicaps than what they did at the time that they won. They'll also get a hat and medal, chucked in with the curse.

So, who do you think is the most improved OZgolfer?

Grunt

What about the chicks?

Flowergirl has had good results this year dropping from 19.7 to 16.3. Considering how much work Reenie has put into her golf this year, with lessons, being fitted for drivers, heading down the the range. Heck she even went on a weightloss blitz....

I nominate Flowergirl, with the amount of golf she plays it is quite easy to go down and then straight back out. She has steadily kept going down in hcap.

The number reduction doesn't tell the full story, however it does provide a guide as to who has improved a lot during the year. The last two years weren't based on numbers.
For example, say you were a 12 handicapper a few years ago, but this year you've dropped from 17 to 14.4. Should you be the most improved?

just
17th October 2006, 01:24 PM
Andy
Perhaps you could ask the frontrunners (or anyone who wants to nominate) to write a blurb on their achievements for the year, what effort they have put in (lessons, practice etc). That way we could get a better feel for each of the candidates and not merely vote for a mate/someone we like/someone we know.
It would make the assessment easier.
Just

AndyP

brad

My initial vote is for Ducky. I would really like to know whether this reduction is through talent or a certain type of practice. I mean if he's worked for it, or he's just found some talent and rhythm , surely it's a no brainer .... :)

I've heard that recently he played to 3

Go Ducky!

Thanks Shazza.........but hey. You've done great too. :) WE don't have to be nominated to know that we are winners.:smt002

Anyone that improved their handicap this year deserves some praise. I admit. But we are nominating the MOST improved, not all those that did improve.

OK, so I'm a little sore about adding a whole shot to my handicap ... :)

I doubt anyone else will nominate me.only mememe ;)

You are the best NSWelshman (but hey, I've blown out 50% in the past 3 months, what would I know), pity you follow the Rabbits or you'd be a shoe in :p

Cobra has made the best improvement, from being a good golfer to a better one. Unfortunately he supports the Bulldogs though, so my inclination is to reward Senecio who has done much the same.

Ducky hasn't plateu'd yet obviously, and can be argued he was never a 15 marker, although he could wind up a 5 marker in the next 6 months.

Well on the basis of the evidence presented I would have to nominate:
Ducky
PeterRs
Grunt

I nominate grunt. With all he has been through this year to improve as much as he has is sensational.

I'll second that. A close second place to CobraSS.
Ducky's numbers are exaggerated as I reckon 15 was never a realistic number. That said, it's still a hell of a drop in a short time.

There's also the infamous thread about Pete's way to improvement (long overdue for a bump).

This year for me this year has been more about getting my head in the game then working on my swing. I think I have done it a bit... I don't hit driver on every hole broken 80 twice in the last two months with no range time. But forgetting all that what I'm most happy about is I won a 36 hole stroke event (all be it B grade) at middle ridge a course I love to hate, knowing I was 2nd going into the finial round.

The way to improvement is simple

1.Love your wedges
2.love your putter more
3.love your self... have confidence and trust your swing.

SPREAD THE LOVE

alot of people have done well this year.

I vote for myself...... if you are basing Grunt's improvement over two years (27.5-17.7). I have gone from 24.4 to 15.8 in two years.

I won't say i've worked on my game to the extent some of the blokes on here have, but i have changed clubs more often than ever before, new putter almost bi-monthly, bag changes galore. :):)

Improvement isn't all about a hcp reduction. I believe improvement stems into many other areas, like course management, etiquette, mental toughness, general attitude etc.

wow, both grunt and shaz have been on a tear! Good work guys. Having watched shaz play for a year or two now, it's always been obvious how much natural ability she has. I think poidda's surprise on Sunday when I told him shaz was off 18 after she pounded another driver down the middle (with her UST V2 stiff-shafted driver!!) speaks volumes about how much more potential she's got. Great stuff, well done.

Well, it would be the right thing for me to make a post considering I have been nominated.

Up until three months ago, I had not played golf seriously for quite some time (approximately six years). Of course, such an extended period of absence required me to earn my handicap once again. As stated above, this became 15.0.

There is obviously some speculation as to whether not my handicap should have been this high, but the truth to the matter is that I was struggling at the time with my game. I had my clubs adjusted (bent 2º upright and lengthened 1") and my previous bad habits (i.e. swing compensations) had surfaced causing inconsistent ball-striking.

This struggle with bad form continued for quite some time, and it was only after getting into contact with a competent teaching professional (who use to teach Peter O'Malley before he left the country) that I was able to start ironing out some of my swing flaws. I still continue to get a lesson every two weeks (depending on how I am performing), but they mainly consist of minor adjustments.

My handicap is currently 7.0, but I firmly believe that I am capable of reaching 5.0 by the end of the year. My short game has been the consistent 'weak link' in my game for quite a while (even as a junior golfer), so I plan to commit a lot more time to improving it.

My short-term goals include participating in the Bathurst Open (28-29 October), NSW Country Championship (4-5 November), and U23 District Match Play. My long-term goals include (in order of preference) improving my physical performance (i.e. flexibility and strength), transitioning to a one plane swing, and reaching a 0.0 (scratch) handicap.

I have left out quite a lot of details (as I did not wish to bore everyone), but if anyone would like further information you're more than welcome to ask. In relation to whether I deserve the 'Most Improved Golfer' title, if I was being honest I would say that there are several other members who are probably more deserving (such as Grant). I do not attend OzGolf days (the only member I have played a round with is Vince), will not be attending the 2006 OzGolf championships, and have not had to overcome any life threatening circumstances (and hope I never have to).

Thanks.

congratulations on the progress you've made ducky. I don't know much about you, other than the Nike fetish, but it sounds like you are commited to your goals, so I don't doubt you'll be a scratch player soon enough. Awesome work so far.

Ducky, you had me at "Well".

Improvement isn't all about a hcp reduction. I believe improvement stems into many other areas, like course management, etiquette, mental toughness, general attitude etc. Which is what I have been saying. The fact that both amanda and courty posted about their goals and progress as they were improving helped their cases.

I still can't decide who I think the most improved is. I'll think on it some more.

So all of the candidates should submit a 1000 word essay on why they think they deserve it.

Choppa
18th October 2006, 08:58 AM
Am I the only one who thinks this is getting a little bit.....I dunno, silly.

Most improved = best handicap reduction. If you want to put rules around that so that people who are returning to the game are ineligible then cool, but isn't handicap the true indication of most improved?

just
18th October 2006, 09:35 AM
No Choppa it isn't getting silly. If you discount Ducky because he is returing to the game the next in line is CobraSS. Look at his golflink, his reduction is based on three good rounds yet his scoring average for the past two years hasn't changed all that much and he has been low before, I wouldn't call that great improvement(and don't misunderstand, I am not saying he isn't playing well and his handicap improvement isn't deserved). Compare this to a Grunt or a PeterRs who have never been this low before, have continually improved over the past year (and two years), their scoring averages have decreased in that period-now thats what I call improvement.
Just offering another point of view.

Does it count if it's not in a comp?

Choppa
18th October 2006, 10:22 AM
Ok Just, that's probably a fair point. Although I still do think a handicap reduction of some sort, with rules applied, should be the basis.

Now Andy, just work it out would you.

Maybe he's willing to let you decide ... or maybe allow others to increase their counts.

Ducky's (or is it Duckies:)) post only proves that he's a good bloke and still deserves the most improved.

Grant - your a very close second mate !
