26/12/2005, Maryborough GC, Stableford

10/13 effective T-shots.
6/18 effective approaches.
3/5 up and down successes.
34 putts.
-------------------
1 birdie.
5 pars.
11 bogeys.
1 double.
Score 41-41-82 [36pts off 12] (Par 34-36-70)

Fingers crossed this is the way I can play golf more often.  After feeling so uncomfortable over the ball on Saturday, yesterday felt pretty damn good.  This is the closest I have got to playing to my handicap since changing my setup/swing, so I'm happy.  In fact, 36pts on a course I've never played before, is hard to complain about.

I was hitting drives straight from the start, although I am still gripping down the driver (maybe it needs to be cut down).  The irons were good in stages, relatively happy with my chipping, and I was rolling the putts nicely.

The encouraging thing is that I know there are plenty of shots out there, including several lipped putts yesterday. I've learnt from it though, and will start aiming for the cup more and not the lip, as I hit 2m or so putts pretty firmly.
I also made the mental error of not becoming more attacking when I was hitting the ball well.  Instead of aiming for the centre of the green, I should have been having a crack at pins, when the confidence was high.  As a result, I was leaving myself longer putts than necessary.

Now it's time to start knocking that cap down again.

Next round:  Social game at Gainsborough Greens tomorrow (another new course for me).

AndyP ... i'm not sure if this has been covered before, but can you clarify your interpretation of an "effective tee-shot" please :?

AndyP ... i'm not sure if this has been covered before, but can you clarify your interpretation of an "effective tee-shot" please  :?
A T-shot that puts me in a good position, I guess.
If I hit a great drive, that kicks a little left, and is in very light rough, then I haven't really been punished.  So I would count that as an effective T-shot.
Also if I was to aim for an adjacent fairway on purpose, to cut the dog leg on a par 5, and nailed it.  Then this would also be an effective T-shot, although not a 'hit fairway'.

Alternatively, that first T-shot that I hit at Brookwater that hit the trees on the right, but landed in the centre of the fairway (but miles away from the green) didn't count as an effective fairway. It was a crap shot, and took away any chance of making the green in two.

The same thinking applies to effective approach.  A GIR doesn't count if you are on the fringe, but if I am in a good position to putt, then I'd like that reflected in my statistics.

It's just a way of me keeping stats that are more relevant to me or my handicap.

This has probably already been debated before also, but I think this is the correct way to keep your stats AndyP.

Why would you credit yourself with a GIR if you are 40 feet away and a good chance at three putting, as opposed to a missed green when you are only 12 feet from the pin and a good chance of making the putt for birdie.

AndyP, do you go into detail on your course management with your stats?

What I mean is, just missing the fairway on the left but still in play with the pin on the right side of the green would be an effective drive, but if you hit the same drive with a left pin location it may not be an effective drive.

Follow up game yesterday and would you believe it, the form held and another 40 points :D and beat Caz who had 35 - don't want 2005 to finish now after what has been a pretty demoralising year handicap wise.

One last chance today for a reality check for the year.

Being from the school of Dr. Bob, I believe I am going to sink the putt when I am standing over it, so it would be very rare that I would not mark a GIR as an effective approach. Although there has been two occasions where I have chipped when on a green because of the enormity and complexes of it (National Old, Brookwater).

I don't go into that much detail. It's more about getting myself on the green, than having a good shot at the pin. A lot of the time I aim for a safe portion of the green, and don't shoot at the flag.
Perhaps using the stat this way would be something more relevant for a scratch golfer, but not for me.

27 Dec Middle Ridge Single Stab

36pts. (94 net).

avg day- tee off was 10am and was feeling the heat on the last couple of holes (it was 38 when we finished). playing with a guy getting his hcp when he last had one 8 years ago he was off 10. He was -1 through 9 holes fell apart on the back nine for a 80, be interesting to see what hcp he gets. Anyway to my day 21 on the front only 15 on the back washed over 1 point on the last 5 holes. Hit some great drives and iron shots. on the par 3 4th my new gap wedge spun the ball (hx tour 56)back 4 meters  (landed past the hole mid green and was nearly of the front- there was a nice white dot in the center of the iron)

high light... I think  on 18 I hit the green with my drive  ..... the prac green that is  scared the shit out of the people on it. It was a interesting shot back to the right green.

ps. didn't play out at roma it was 44 sat & sun at our house, it broke 40 at 8am and was still above 40 at 6pm the air con could only cool the house to 29.

Played at Kogarah this morning, was it hot or what? :smt013
Did not start well for a 12 point back nine after teeing off at the 10th. Started to bring it back together on the back nine for 16 points to end with 28. My swing was coming back to me today, I could see the light at the end of the tunnel, I just hope it is not another train coming to flatten me

Highlight for the day was birdie @ the 7th, 108m Par 3, after a gap wedge to 1.25m to the pin. I know it was 1.25 because 1.23 knocked me off for NTP :? Outting was ok only one 3 putt just no one putts to save those bad holes from twos into ones or ones into wipes.

I know I can play better than this and I know some have you have seen it, but boy it is frustrating the crap out of me at the moment to hit good shot bad shot routinely.

played Nudgee again this morning. Bloody hot day ... would've been unbearable without the slight breeze we had :(

79 off the stick (nett 67) hitting the irons pretty well at the moment and am also making some putts .. which is nice

7 fairways
8 GIR
4/7 up&downs
31 putts.

might have finally got down to 11 before the end of the year :D

28/12/2005, Gainsborough Greens GC, Social Round.

8 pars
6 bogeys
1 double
3 others (including 1 that would have been a 12 or so)
Score 15-17-32pts [H/cap 13 Par 72 ACR 72]

Hot course, pretty hard yakka on the home stretch.
Probably affected my play a little bit as my tolerance for bad shots was pretty low.

Didn't continue my good play from Monday unfortunately, and was pretty inconsistent today. The putting was where I really seemed to struggle, pulling and pushing a few.

As for the course, I didn't think too much of it, although there were some nice holes. Fairways on the back nine seemed a bit crap, Greens were ordinary, there was no breeze and plenty of flys. For the full price of $52.50, it is highly unlikely I will play there again.

Next round: Ocean Shores Back Marker comp.......maybe.

Single Par at Mildura today.

Golflink hadn't updated so I took myself in the 1.6 from Saturday to take myself from 26.4 to 24.8 and play off 25.

Carved it up again for +7 and the B-grade win. 8)

Out in +3 and in with +4. Only 1 hole where I stunk the joint up and picked up before it was in the hole and one tap in minus.

CCR will probably be 69 with a few other good scores. Not good enough to beat me though. That should be another 1.6 and a total of 3.2 in 2 rounds. Yay me!! :D

Way to go Bruce..good to see you're finally playing down where you should be. I reckon you need to drop another 7 by New Year so you won't be known as "the burglar"
Nice scoring there :D

Played social comp with John this morning - 5.45 am tee off!!! And talking about burgulars - old Johnny boy had 41 points. He is really hitting them well at the moment - it was his short game that let him down today. I played pretty ordinary Gross 93 - around my home course - i should play better than that.

Played Concord this morning again I failed to get 30 points, 25 points with 5 wipes; but there was enough good things in my games to walk away reasonably happy. 1 Birdie & 2 Pars.
If I could only get off the tee consistently my scoring would be so much better. Driver was not working today and was very inconsistant, at least before I knew it was going right with a slice but now I pull it left as well :? Got 2 drives away safely and resulted in a paring and birdieing the hole
Iron play was very good today so much so a few holes overclubbed not trusting the distances that I was hitting them.
Putting was ok but could have been better if I could get the pace of the greens right, quite a few putts were online only to see them stop just short of the hole. :?

The light at the end of the tunnel is getting closer.

Concord today with Andrew and Grunt.

28 points. Played awful. A lot of really bad shots. No facet of my game performed well. Found myself in a lot of bunkers with long bunker shots to the pin. Three par 5's , three wipes :( Lowest point was a par 5, 90 metres out in two. A hack into a bunker, a semi duff out and three putts for a horrid wipe

Fairways = 8 of 12 (seemed worse)
Greens in reg = 4 of 18 :(
Putts = 33, 1 three putt, 1 birdie
Up & Down = 0 of 5 :(
Sand Saves = 3 of 9

I'm going to sum up several days here...

Basically - i am under-prepared mentally and physically from taking on Ocean Shores tomorrow!

Last Saturday - Too hot in Casino for golf... way too hot. I struggled in 40+ heat, going through about 5-6 litres of water. 4-ball and i didn't hit a ball on the 18th (after par'ing 17), i couldn't swing another stick.

Tuesday (Ballina) - I hate this course. Sorry Drunken, i hate it. Hate. Index 18, 17 and 16 holes? All par 5's. Mozzies infest 3 seperate sections of the course. The greens were slow and crap, and the uphill 16th always plays into the sun. With a billion leaves on the fairway, be stuffed if you can ever find your ball.

Oh, and i played terribly for 25 points.

Today (Casino) - 30 points (12/18). Finally found some form coming into tomorrow gut-buster at Ocean Shores. Found some consistency with the driver, and par'd the 2 longest par 4's. If i had a short game i would have saved the 6+ strokes i was off the pace.

Grunt, I don't see why they would accept your card from a social round for handicap purposes. And why would someone who didn't witness it, sign the card?

BTW well done on the low score.
Maybe you need to relax a bit more for your comp games and don't have expectations of yourself or your score. Look how well you did today, when the score didn't matter.

Played yesterday at Portarlington GC with my bro-in-law and a couple of his mates, was his birthday and he was trying out his x-mas/birthday pressie (set of irons) for the first time.

We played from the green fee markers, they were often well in front of the ladies tees :x Couldn't take driver a few times coz they were too short and hit 7i or more only 4 times, including the par 3's  Highlight, three putting for par from a few metres  Might put the driver in the cupboard for a while, doesn't do me much good anyway.

My score sucked and I had ten over with 35 putts  But my bro had a great day shooting better than bogey golf (Pb) with his new clubs :D He was soo pleased that he even shouted the first round at the 19th  I may have failed to mention the theory of the honeymoon period, but the cheesy grin on his face all day was too good to spoil.

3 rounds this week.  Love holidays

26/12 - Maryborough - ozgolf day
36 points - 85 off stick 39 (+5) / 46 (+10).   7 fairways, 3 GIR, 25 putts (left a lot of balls just on the fringe,  but even so still putted the lights out)
Just about shaved the cup on the 4th for eagle, then 2 putted.

29/12 - Hervey Bay - Mrs BrisWesty said, "I don't mind if you play today", so popped over on the off chance and there was a place available.
31 points - approximately 93 off stick (fortunately not stroke, "picked up" on the 4th still 150 metres out, and really picked up when over the back for 8), played 10-13 for 2 points.  9 fairways, 1 GIR, 6 bunkers (2 sand saves), 27 putts (if counting the pick up as 2 putts).  Lovely smooth greens, played with a 4 marker who doesn't carry a pitch repairer, you literally cannot leave a pug mark on those greens.

Was wayward with my approaches both rounds, guess that shows in the fairways v GIRs, moreso on Thursday, Hervey Bay has a lot of smaller raised greens that shed slightly off line balls.

31/12 - Caboolture - 39 points with 2 lost balls but no washes -
83 off stick - 9 fairways, 7 GIR, 32 putts with only one 3 putt (from a GIR  ), nothing fell in, but left nearly every first putt from up to 18m away to within 1 metre.  9 pars, 6 bogeys, 3 double bogeys.  41 on the front 9, my best ever, including playing 1-5 in 1 over.  Good solid golf,  but I know there were shots left out there (not as many as the previous 2 rounds though).

Lost 0.6, so back to 14.2 (my = lowest ever)

If I could play this often more often, I'd be a lower marker.

6/12 effective T-shots.
3/18 effective approaches.
1/10 up & down successes.
40 putts.
-------------
1 birdie (temp forward tee area).
2 pars.
7 bogeys.
5 doubles.
3 others.
Score 53-45-98 nett 85 (Par 36-36-72).

Started the Xmas break playing ordinary, looked good in the middle, then finished badly.
I would've liked to have got to the range the day before this round to work on driving and putting, but it was too hot. Of course, this is what let me down during the game. Bad drives were punished and putting was tough on the massive greens.

Oh well, I'm over it.

Next round: ????, I'm on a break.
