Looking at arriving via Qantas at 7.30am on Friday and departing 9pm Sunday. Anyone playing Friday who I could hook up with for a lift? Would need to jag a ride back on Sunday too please.

Will be good to see you down here Ferrins.

I might book in another two rooms to be sure. Looks like we'll get the numbers.
Will see if I can get another group or two for Friday golf just in case.

The 24 players per day of the champs are firm. If we get the numbers this year we can look at making it bigger and better next year with enough time to plan and get first dibs on bookings.

October..... should be fine temp wise?

wazandnic
25th June 2013, 08:01 PM
Agree Titty, it should be ok in October... although I was once there in mid December and it felt like it could snow!

As mentioned in the other thread my mates and I do a weekend middle of winter in the highlands every year, temps are usually in the range 0-10... just adds to the experience! ;)

Quick update. Have got the trophies sorted for the things mentioned below. Will post a pic in a week or two when they arrive.

Trophy for 1st, 2nd, 3rd place. These are very nice.
4 x NTP
2 x LD
1 x Putting (putting comp held Saturday morning)
1 x NAGA
20 x participation medals with ribbon for the inaugural event. TBC.

Will also be an additional prize for first three placegetters. I have to speak with someone next week re the details. When confirmed I'll inform the thread.

Rest of the prize pool will be prizes for the winner, who will probably be very spoilt.

Will be a $30 prize pool donation per player. Account to be set up in due course for deposit.

Nice one Matty... just two questions, and not wanting to dis on your organising, just curious...

1. Will these be perpetual trophies, i.e. just bring them back next year and add a name to it?? Or are they for the winners to keep? From personal experience I've found the perpetual trophy seems to work better a) as who really wants to collect a bunch of trophy's to keep forever?... but moreso, b) when bringing it back it creates a bit of talk and a History of the event, who has won it previously etc, etc. and c) it means we don't have to front up for trophy money each year and/or any money can go to prizes??

2. is there no scratch trophy? Not that it will worry me but a few of you guys are guns and would no doubt flourish with a scrach prize. Could it not be 1st, 2nd and Scratch instead of 1,2,3? No one remembers 3rd! ;)

Finally, just another suggestion re: prize pool, previous social events I have been at every body just donated a prize to the table, may be a bottle of wine, sleeve of pro v's, box of balls, towel, cap, anything really you have laying around. Every one donates and then every one gets a pick of the table, winner first pick etc... kind of makes everyone feel special! ;)

Anyway, just some random thoughts. Really I'm happy to run with whatever you decide as you are the organiser, just offering up some suggestions.

Cheers,
Waz

Waz,

All great suggestions. Thought about the perpetual trophy too but was suss on whether the winner (who can be a newbie and then dissapear forever) would always hand it back or care enough to make sure it got back. I like the idea and will look at getting one. Might forgo the prize for 3rd and redirect the funds to a perpetual trophy.

The scratch trophy sounds good too. Might just add a scratch trohpy because even though no one remembers 3rd, 3rd place will. Am just trying to include more in the prizes.

The prize pool is good too. Never heard of that. What do you reckon?, everyone bring something up to the value of $20 or so. That would cover sleeves of balls, towels, bags of tees, whatever.

You're an ideas man Waz.

yep agree with the above. Newbies can win the main prize but the perpetual trophy shoud go to the best "established" winner. have done this in the past also.

haha. I've run a couple of big social type events, plus co-ordinate about 14 mates that get together a handful of times a year including trips away, etc, plus have attended another golf forum meet the past 6 years... so just going on what I've witnessed seemed to work best.

happy to help in anyway I can.

Cheers,

No worries. Unless one of the final 2 participants are newbies it wouldn't matter who won the perpetual of the current attendees.

Just from an organising standpoint if people are bringing prizes it's better to know what they are before the day. Can be tricky and time consuming to divide them up on the spot.

Just my $0.02 from this years VIC champs.

I know but I took his name off the playing list. If he can play in 3 months that'll be great. I sent him a text anyway.

I may not even play the next couple of months with my elbow playing up. I reckon I could be in serious contention for the NAGA if my handicap doesn't change beforehand. Should compliment the monthly medal on the mantlepiece.

Glenn Whittle, who runs The Sydney Putting Studio at The Ridge Golf Course, has kindly donated a putting assessment to be thrown in to the prize pool at the champs. The knowledge Glenn has and the technology he uses makes this a really good golfers prize. I think Stuartd147 and Dangals have had the pleasure of visiting him before.

See link-:
http://www.theridgegolf.com.au/clubfitting/putting_studio.html

I just got back from a putting assessment. Am now looking at a couple of spec changes on the putter. Will give me a chance to consider a new putter while not playing at the moment.

Great work Matty,

What did you think of the session?

matty
15th July 2013, 04:29 PM
Pretty good. He watched me on the putting green for a bit then I putted on the mat with the machine picking up what I'm doing with the stroke and club head. He demonstrated with the use of lasers how I wasn't keeping the face square to the putting path through the stroke.

Not a huge issue but it explains some of the misses I have when I pull it left. The face opens too much to the path and I try to over correct and pull it left. Very annoying on those 4 footers.

I putt with a 34.5" two ball. I sold all my putters as I liked this one and knew it was mostly me.

So, the outcome of today was the length and loft of my putter is correct for me but I need the shaft to be a couple of degrees more upright, and he believes a center shafted will help me with the path. He also proved that I was more inside the ball than I should be. I thought I was over the ball or just inside but I was well inside with the toe up slightly.

He gave me the specs I need for my putter.

Overall it was well worth it for peace of mind for such an important part of the game.

Will be a good prize for whoever gets it in the end.

What does a session like that cost for those that won't be playing (me)

I am settled on my number 9 shape, but wouldn't mind getting the length and lie sorted.

Does he give you advice on the your stroke/technique or just look at the specs??

matty

Both. Although he did say that if you purchase one of his milled putters the process is more involved at the testing stage before settling on the final specs before production. Something to do with comparing minute spec changes.

Ask Stu, he bought one from him...

I went to Glen last year and did the whole bit and got a putter made. Glen and the process is very thorough and great fun, I did learn a lot about my putting (how bad it was) and he fitted me out with a "studio like" putter which was 33" long, the right loft/etc and a heavy 380g head to help me slow my tempo and keep on line. The putter head is beautiful. All up I spend $420.

Was it good value??? For the advice and lesson it was, but I struggled with the putter's overall weight and the feel, and the sweet spot seems the size of a pea. It takes a REAL LOT for me to complain about anything, however, the putter head started to get rust spots on it so I contacted Glen about it and emails went round and round in circles between him, me and his putter manufacturer to the point I gave up and stopped communicating. The manufacturer said it was impossible until I sent him photos, still no responsibility taken.

Glen is a great guy and knows his stuff. The testing/training gear he has is fantastic and I highly recommend you avail yourself of this process. I have 4-5 mates including one of our pro's who have been through the same process with no issues, maybe I am just unlucky.

As I say, I don't like to complain, however since you (Titty) are effectively asking me a direct question I feel I should respond honestly. (Sorry Glen)

I now use an old 2nd hand Rossa centre shaft with an oversized grip and have never putted better.

Captain Nemo
16th July 2013, 07:28 AM
Ive seen Stu's putter and rolled it several times.
I agree with Stu, its heavy, bloody heavy!
Also seen the rust spots, not great imo, and the maker should have sorted it out?

Ie do they mill the head shape and weight custom for each customer?

they are Aussie made but they have a small collection of styles to pick from - none of which I liked hence why I went with a Lajosi instead. With Kari you have the final say in everything from style to colour etc...

Other than that I confirm what both Matty and Stu have said about Glenn and the whole process - very worthwhile.

I'd also like to put my name to a room, just to get it organised and out of the way. I need a room mate if someone wants to put their hand up. Hi Matty / All,

Sorry for this and I hate doing this after confirming a spot but the wife has reminded me I have double booked myself for the Sunday... I can still play Saturday and am happy to stay Saturday night to tuck Titty into bed, (FYI our room for Saturday night IS confirmed), but will not be able to play on the Sunday.

With vacant spots in the field I assume this is ok? Of course if the vacant spots get taken and there are reserves who sign up and want to play both days then I will forego my spot. Please let me know otherwise.

Similarly if numbers for accomodation Saturday night require an extra bed for someone then I will suffer the wrath and give up my spot.

Apologies for the stuff up.

150 putts in 3 days = 150 putts in 6 rounds (i.e. 3daysx 36 holes) = 25 putts per round, not evn taking into account the extra 2 holes at LF... What's wrong with that Dotty??

I vote for stableford.

Qualifying for the putting comp. will be on the practice green, as you finish on day 1. (I'll also collect the cards and possibly help with ruling queries.)
One putt from 2m, 4m and 6m.
Top four qualifiers will be determined on total putts sunk.
If tied, countback will be on lowest aggregate distance from hole. (If still tied for 4th place, a single 6m sudden-death putt-off will open day 2. Ties for other seeds, determined by coin toss.)
A $10 'bride' buys a second qualifying attempt (but you can only accept one qualifying spot).

Semi-finals will be on practice green before the start of day 2. (1 plays 4 and 2 plays 3)
Same distances, countback, etc. to determine the two finalists.
Final will be same distances, etc., with the overall winner getting the trophy and the bridesmaid catching the 'bride' bouquet.

Any objections? Keep them and bring them up immediately after I three putt from 3m.

I went to the driving range today after work to test my bionic shoulder out. I could hit a GW but I couldn't swing my 3W or driver. I should be able to bunt up to a 7 iron down and it will be much more accurate than my driver anyway so... I'M IN! :)

I speak for monsta and myself on this. We both wish we could make it and hope to next year but circumstances have hurt us this year. I will be OS and Monsta has Canberra commitments.

Good luck with it all. I home to get to Sydney some point between Christmas and new year for a day trip, hit, a night at the skids and meet a few of the sydney boys.

No dramas Benno. Let us know when you're up in Sydney at that time. I'll be off and up for a game, as will some others be as well.

Got a great possibility for next years champs that I'll flag with all during the Sunday presentation. If all works out could see at least 30 attending.

But let's get the first out of the way!

Re this prize. I'll explain it best I can without writing an essay.
The clubfitting centres in the states and Canada are massive. We don't really have anything like them in Australia.
Pure Performance Golf Labs ( http://pureperformancegolflabs.com/ ) is opening the first outlet in Oz, in Alexandria, Sydney. The location will be open at the start of December. Fitout about to start.
It's all about the clubfitting using the latest technology, including putter fittings.
The big thing with them, I was told, is that they will have every shaft and driver head available for fitting on the market and every computerised stat about them. All will be interchangable.
Steve Menzies is heavily involved in starting the business in Australia. Paul Jenner of Purified Golf ( http://www.purifiedgolf.com/aboutus.php ) will be heading up operations and is the main man for clubfitting and has been learning the stuff in the states.

One of the prizes offered is a clubfitting for a driver, which is very detailed. I won't go into it as most of it was too technical for me.
So the winner will have the fitting and get the perfect head and shaft combo made up for them. The cost of the shaft, head, and fitting is around the $850 mark. Cracking prize.

The other two prizes (valued at $329 each) is a full clubfitting for a set using all the technology there. You have to take your clubs in, which will be tested. Apparently the whole thing takes a while and is an experience in itself, especially when trying a myriad of heads and shaft combos. I'm not brand conscious and would find this very interesting. So the person will come away with the knowledge of what is optimum for them. What they do with that knowledge is up to them.

Matty (or whoever is doing the sat groups) can I ask to be put in the last group on sat please.
My wife is at a Conference and I'll need to get kids to inlaws etc before I drive down.

Do tell.

Not much to tell, but had a look at Jono's shiny new clubs. He still gets it out there for a bloke that is still recovering from major shoulder surgery, crazy man!

In the tradition of the major apparel brands pre-Majors, I may unveil an apparel schedule for the 3 days...and incur the Fashionista's scorn if he finds this thread again.

I am the one with the form on the board, I been the winner for the NAGA in the last 2 ozgolf event. Good chance I can made it 3 in a row.

Don't worry about me. I just checked my trophy cabinet - Swimming 1972 and Cross Country 1995.

I'm not due for anything else before 2018.

Well, the perpetual takes us to about 2032, so your spot for 2018 is secured.
2032, how old will we all be then
