View Full Version : Resize Images in Posts (Trial)

I've installed a modification to the forum that limits the size of images on the screen. This avoids showing images that are larger than the screen size, and then you have to use the horizontal scroll to read posts for the rest of the page, which was pretty annoying.

It does not decrease the size of the download, only the visual size it appears at. If you want to view the image at full resolution, just click on the image and it opens in a new window.

There are a few modifications that can do this, some more complicated than others, and possibly less reliable. This one was first cab off the rank for me.

I would like to hear your thoughts on the idea and this mod, or whether this mod is actually working for you at all.

Here are some examples of threads with pictures in them:

My initial impression of this particular mod is that it certainly makes the page neater, but may be going overboard with the decrease in image size.

Try the last link to brisvegas's forged irons thread. While it resized the images, I still had to use the horizontal scroll bar to see the rest of the page. I noticed that the image first appears at full size before shrinking to the mod's set size. Maybe because it first appears at full size it's too late to stop the need to scroll.

I too find the necessity to scroll to read posts annoying. It'd be ok if it was only the post with the picture, but it seems to affect the whole page.

Well done :)

Nothing worse than moving all over the shop.

I noticed this too, but the extra width is caused by an extra long url address further down the page. This could be fixed by adding a word wrapping mod, that would force the text to go to the next line. I've seen one around somewhere.

There was another image limiter mod that put horizontal scroll bars within posts, if needed, but I tried this one first.

From your responses it seems that you don't think the images have been shrunk too much.

Good stuff andy. The only issue I can see is that it doesn't seem to load the fullsize picture when you click the link??

Same thing happens for me too, not that I care because I'm using a 30" monitor these days.

I still think it's an excellent idea though. Well done, AndyP. :D

So it doesn't get any bigger than the size you are viewing it at in the forum?

This one opens at 800x561 for me.

What browsers are you using? Courty - Safari? Drunken - Firefox?
You don't get any sort of enlarge option when you hover the mouse over the image in the new window?

OK, I'll remove the mod and try a similar one, as there is plenty of support for the idea. I'll let you know when the new one is installed, so you can provide feedback. Thanks for the feedback so far.

Maybe I should look for a download size limiter mod too. 300kB for a picture of one wedge...come on. I really feel for the dial up users.
But then again, this is in our guidelines, it just hasn't been enforced:

Photo File Sizes
It is requested that all effort is made to ensure photo file sizes are kept under 50k, or 100k at an absolute maximum. Once again we need to ensure that the comfort of dialup users is kept in mind and therefore we ask that you adhere to this rule.

How about the links to places like image shack etc. that way the peple with diak up are not inconveinienced.

How many regular memebers are actually on dialup? Maybe we should run a poll on that, using your global notice mod so that EVERYONE can see it.

There are also those that have small download limits.

Dippy as soon as I point the mouse over a rezised image (which is a link to the popup), my browser does the old ERROR ON PAGE message in the bottom left hand corner. It only does this after I put the cursor over the image.

The author of the mod has supposedly fixed the bugs, so I have reinstalled the new version, instead of trying a different one.

Could you please give it another test for me? In particular, those of you who it didn't work for before (Courty, drunken, Matt3Jab, BrisVegas).
Does it resize properly?
Does it open full-size in a new window when you click on it?

I've also changed the resize limit from 350 pixels to 650 pixels, but they are still coming up the same size as before for me. :? How about you?

No. It only resizes if it is bigger than the limit. It won't make images larger. Or shouldn't anyway...

Eliminated this when I reloaded the page.

I'm using IE6 at work, and the new window worked fine.  I can also see the gopher in your signature.

However, I now need to use the horizontal scroll bar to read this thread, even though it fits on the page fine.   :smt017
I may have to reduce the maximum pic display size down from 650 pixels.

Any other problems, guys?

The mod has been removed for now. Hopefully the author can fix it and re-release it bug free. I'll give him a little while, before trying another one.
