So there are a few here on OzGolf who either do their own work, or who get work done on their own stuff.
Here's a thread to show off your new pieces of work.

Some older buckles of which a few have moved on...

timah!
25th April 2013, 12:30 AM
So, the next buckle is underway. Got it back from the powder coaters today.

http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/04/24/u9yverug.jpg

The next steps will be to wet and dry sand the 'high parts' of the buckle - the edge and the Scotty. Take the powder coat off from there, then polish it up.

Will see how it ends up.

I'm not sure yet haha. I'll see how the black powder coat one turns out first.

I know what $$ I had on my last one, but I do like them so we'll see.

Where do you get your belts made up?

I searched a lot of places online and couldn't find anything. So I went to mister minit here in Mackay and he recommended a shop in Mackay called "a little country". The guy who owns it is a craftsman and imports the leather from Italy and it is the type of leather that is dyed all the way through. So he says it will last forever, unlike the Chinese belts which split and look like crap after a short while. He put fixed clips on it as well, as they are less bulky and look better.

Cheers! It took a bloody long time; and its lasted about 10 rounds now without a single chip to the paint full so I'm pretty happy.

It was an experiment - so I used regular craft paint, but sealed it with clear nail polish. Its turned out great.

Originally I wanted to a pastel coloured theme, but couldn't find the colours.

Cheers Rowey.
The selects are a bit funny that the translucent colours don't really 'pop' on them. And I'm a bit funny about mixing trans colours with the flat colours.
The orange/white/green looks great on my select newport.
But yeah, bright is good on those heads.

Puji did you need to do any prep work like removing old paint in etching or just paint over it? Finally I might have a use for all my girlfriends nail polish and craft stuff

I removed the old paint fill first so I had a bit of depth to work with. Just used automotive paint stripper. The gel stuff. Great product. All the paint lifted off the club after 20 minutes.

If I didn't use the clear nail polish - the craft paint would have just dissolved off when moisture hit it. But the nail polish seals it all in.

I agree.....!

Auction time.

You guys bid an amount... That amount will be a) the amount I give you if I like the finished product enough to want to keep it, AND b) the amount you give me if I decide to pass.

Guy,
Send it up to me. It's going to need a lot of work and there is no guarantee that it'll even work as a resto.

BUT I'll give it a crack in my uni holidays.
1) You need to be ok with it getting stuffed.
2) If you like it and want it back, you fix me up some materials costs and some labour it'll come back to you.
3) If you don't like it, I'll keep it and fix it up that way.

timah!
9th May 2013, 12:30 PM

Ok so for the past couple of days I've been mucking around with 'plasti dip' which courty had used to do a putter head in another thread, wasn't familiar with the product so it was all experimental, I decided to do the shafts first to see how it went, here is my del mar that I just finished and put a new grip on it. I wanted white originally but they only had black so I went with it, there's something that feels really good about it, it's very calming at address, I took it for a roll this arvo and felt really good. Now I'm not sure about the wear but that's something that I will detail after I use it for a few rounds. It's obviously not something that everyone would care about but I was bored and thought why not and it turned out very well. Thanks

Nice work! Very crisp looking setup.

I got a matt black shaft from Vibrant Golf for my Never Compromise sub 30. Probably the best thing I ever did, because now when i look down, all I see is the ball and the alignment marks.

I originally wrapped it in matt black vinyl, but it didn't wear very well.

Shane788
20th May 2013, 05:20 PM
Thanks benno, yeah I couldn't believe the difference it made at address, I seen those shafts forsale but thought I'd give this ago first, ill post pics of the irons soon done my whole spare set of mp 60s they look mint, how's maryborough looking benno? I was going to play there on Sunday but plans changed, haven't played there for a couple weeks now. Love that course.

benno_r
20th May 2013, 05:27 PM
I reckon that iron set would look mint! Maryborough is looking great at the moment, though I haven't played for a couple weeks as I have been away for work. A week or so without rain to give the lads a chance to sort out the bunkers, and it would nearly be back to the best I have seen it.

Is Hervey Bay your home track? If so, how's it looking? I haven't played there for a few months now.

Cheers,
Ben

Shane788

I couldn't believe the difference it made at address, like benno said so much more focus on ball and alignment. It's a really cool product all you have to do to remove is make a cut and peel it off, I painted on garage floor and once I was done I just peeled it off and it was back to concrete, great stuff.

Has anyone had a crack at making there own headcovers? I thought I'd give it a go this arvo as I finished work early . I bought a couple plush toy 'bombs' off the bay for $5 posted from china and they arrived yesterday, so today I unstitched the bottom and removed 75% of the stuffing. Placed inside a couple old headcovers I had, stitched up the bottom around the sock and they were done, there for my 3 and 5 wood, there the super mario bombs I got 1 black and 1 red and I was surprised that they looked pretty good especially with my black white red titleist bag, will probably end up going back to the titleist covers but a bit of fun for an hours work and you could do this with any plush toy you could find. Ill post pics tomorrow. Thanks

Shane788
28th May 2013, 08:04 PM
Just went down stairs and took a pic tell me what you think, I'm still thinking about what to get for the driver. The original reason I got the bombs was because I was going to make one for a 13* 3 deep so I thought the bomb was relevant but haven't got the 3 deep yet so this will do, never been a fan of novelty head covers but ill give them a try, at least they only cost $5.

Thanks guys yeah well like I said they both cost me $5 posted and I see novelty head covers going for $40 plus each. So there cheap plus you can just find what ever plush toy that catches your eye and make it work, if you can use a needle and thread and have a couple spare hours then its worth it for a bit of fun. Just make sure you check the size of the toy you get I got 6" and they fit good for 3 and 5 wood I'd go 8"-9" for driver.

I'm glad you did end up going white I do think that it will wear the best out of all the colours, I wish I had the chance to get white, hopefully they will get it with new stock. How many coats you end up doing of white and clear BUSHY?

BUSHY
7th June 2013, 04:03 PM
For those thinking of using the plasti dip.... Dont if you want (expect) it to last for a while.. Only took 9 holes and some chipping practice for the finish to tear and start peeling away in a few spots. That roughly equates to 4-5 times in and out of the bag before I noticed the split. Best thing is though that it does peel right off.

Shane788
7th June 2013, 08:42 PM
Wow that didn't take long? Mine is still fine and its been 3 or so weeks and about 6 full rounds plus the range. Some light scuffs but no tears. I put about 5 coats of clear on though.

BUSHY
7th June 2013, 09:22 PM
That might be the key. 5 coats?? What was surprising was how easily it peeled once I got a big enough split in it. Next task then...>5 coats. Question Shane... when you put that amont of clear on it does it end up 'feeling' smooth to the touch? Cheers mate.

Shane788
8th June 2013, 07:00 AM
Yeah it's does mate, that's the only reason I put so many coats of clear on because I thought it would help being smooth so it wouldn't tear.

It's a pretty old stick in terms of age. Almost 14 years old? With plenty of use, these sorts of sticks will end up like this. Kinda why you're supposed to make sure they're dry after each round and give them a wipe with an oil cloth regularly.

The face *should* pop off if I push it from the back.

I found this engraving quite interesting:
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/13/06/13/vedubyju.jpg

I'm not really sure what it relates to. Doesn't seem to be head weight (unless my scales are well out) - number of heads, a quality check? Random yet interesting.

Anyway, the more I look at this, I think messing about with mild removers is going to fruitless.
There's just so much on it. So I'm thinking a mild acid to start with. If it removes the finish I'm ok with that...

More to come!

Dotty
13th June 2013, 10:16 AM
Timah, I bought a raw Cally wedge in same condition (from a seaside driving range).

White Knight Rust Convertor.

I think it came up as a rough matt finish, so hit it with the small wire brush on the Dremel and some 240 grit sandpaper.

(And bright silver paint for the lettering against the raw finish looks subtle/refined, especially as the raw goes darker.)

timah!
13th June 2013, 10:21 AM
Cheers Dotty. I'll see how round one comes up. It's not bubbling and frothing away like a harsh acid would so hopefully it really only starts to loosen or remove the initial rust.

Will definitely require some wire brush action.

Phosphoric acid or caustic soda are the best that I've used for rust removal. Phosphoric acid can be had in litre bottles at most tile shops as that's what they use to clean up tiles after laying. It works really well and actually leaves a layer, like anodizing does, that will prevent further rust.

Try to stay away from Hydrochloric acid. It's very strong and you never know just what it's going to eat. You really have to watch it carefully.
I don't waste time with coke, which is just a very, very diluted phosphoric acid anyway.

timah!
13th June 2013, 01:15 PM
Yeah, as much as if love to hit it with the hydrochloric, it's not my preferred option.
What I've used so far is an acid that you use on chlorinator cells, so it's very very mild.

I think though my next step after one more bath will be a sanding or sand blasting if I can find a kit cheap enough...

Dotty
13th June 2013, 01:22 PM
I think the active ingredient of Rust Convertor is phosphoric acid.

Rather than a brownish finish above, it left a whitish finish with the same texture, which I assume is the de-oxidised rust.

Good to hear GI.

I've decided that when I get home from work I'll give it another bath.

The head isn't actually in too bad condition for a gamer. So a grind and a sand should see it quite nice.

Then will go finish hunting over the weekend.

The finish is holding up fine. I am really happy with it. I have reapplied the blue a couple of times, but it is as quick as wiping it over like you are cleaning it.

I just pulled the shafts out of 3 oil can wedges I got off kj yesterday. Will blue them as well.

I reckon you will have to neutralise the residual acid. Perhaps soak in Bleach, or coat it in Toothpaste and leave for a day or 2. If you are going to blue it, get a hold of some Fertan rust treatment, which will convert/neutralise the residual rust and leave a black/blueish finish.

That looks awesome Shane. What kind of paint did you use?

Used an satin black enamel spray pack by 'dupli colour' it's used mainly for high use and high temp areas on cars like brake calipers and so on, it has a guarantee for no cracks, no chips and no fading. Just got it from Supercheap, I wanted to get some more expensive stuff from a paint shop but they all closed early being Saturday so I thought I'd give this a go if it fails ill just strip it and go again :D

Are you fine sanding between coats?

Only thing that would harm this paint would be if you sky the ball a lot, which I don't and I'm not rough with my clubs so I think it should turn out well.

Nope, it's such a nice spray it's turning out fine, plus it being a satin finish it wouldn't look much different.

If there were an imperfection like dust or the sprayer clogged and splattered on it I would but I don't think it's needed with the way it's going. If it was a gloss being cleared I would wet sand final coat before clear coat.

Might get into the 910's next weekend.
Will try and get some gun blue this week too.

Yeah turned out well ill see how it looks in the morning and take all the tape off, make sure you use the 3M fine line auto tape because it's the only one that won't bleed. I struggled finding gun blue around here see how you go I ended up getting it from the states, $12 delivered for 100ml bottle I think.

Shane you should take the tape off while the paint is a little wet to give you a nice crisp line. I have used that paint on motorcycle parts, and it is going to stink out your house baking it in the oven!

Yeah, it looks like eBay could be the guy.
I'm not sure I want to start asking around my area about any gun shops haha.

Yeah I thought about doing that but this tape is the king of tapes and apparently you don't need to, it's the stuff they use to do pinstriping and all that, see how it goes in the morning

Tim, keep us posted how you go with the 910s.

If it turns out well, I might scout around for a old banged up 910 head, and get you to paint it in some outrageous colour scheme........

Haha yeh turned out well, if I was to do it again I'd change some minor things but I'm happy with it, I ended up wet sanding with 2000 grit because it had a couple tiny marks looked like a bug landed on it because it was just in the shed but come up good. I'm going to do my spare 3 wood next going to try for less coats and see how it goes. I want ' krylon ultra flat black' if anyone knows where in aus sells this, I can't find it anywhere.

It's on hold just now. 1.5m3 of soil will do that. Haha.
Once I find some gun blue it'll be on to the end. Might just grab some off eBay.

Did you use a blade to cut the tape around the face area? It looks like it was precisely done!

I used the 3M fine line tape but even that couldn't turn hard enough especially the 2 top corners on the face, I ended up just taping over the corners and used a hobby knife kit to trim them up and it worked well, building proper workshop in the shed next so it will be a tonne easier than the kitchen bench haha going to make a small spray room as well that will be dust free which will hopefully make it better too.

So I wasn't happy with how thick the paint was as it was fairly raised where it meets the existing white, so I stripped it the other night and changed the design of how the black was going to go. Put 1 light mist on it on Monday, 1 more light mist on Tuesday and a heavy coat on Wednesday and its turned out much better. A lot thinner where it meets the white and the design looks a lot better, unmasked it this afternoon and looks great. Looks a lot better in person.

So I finally have ordered some bluing. I've gone with Tetra Gun Liquid Blue. From some of the forums it's apparently quite dark which is what I'm after. There's a part of me that would love this to arrive before the weekend but I don't think I'll be that lucky.
But finally some progress.

That's going to be sweet, I put about 5 coats of blue of my wedges and they turned out real dark, definitely get a silicone cloth though to wipe it down with everyone n then because mine did want to rush through again.

Shane, can you update us on the condition of the Plastidipped shafts?

Shane788
4th July 2013, 06:26 PM
They came off about 3 weeks ago courty, they were still ok, they had no tears or anything but the black left scuff marks really bad so I pulled it off.
White with a decent amount of clear coats would be the go I think, once I've finished mucking around with painting these drivers and doing these wedges ill give the irons another go but in white.

Cool, keep us informed. I may give mine a go. Could be a good way to protect the shafts from rust spots too.

Polishing with autosol keeps the rust spots at bay Courty... doesn't take too much effort & I only do mine every 6 months or so

I use lanolin oil... it does the job very well also. I just meant that it may provide added protection (assuming there is no rust present before spraying on the Plastidip).

No probs, wasn't having a dig...

I think the plastidip would be cool if it were durable but, I have my doubts. Noting that the black finish on the KBS shafts wasn't very durable (and that was applied by the factory) I can't see how any aftermarket finish would survive any reasonable length of time.

Took the driver out for a comp game today after 2 weeks curing, I was hitting it on every hole even the holes I'd use 3 or 5 wood just because I wanted to give it a good test out and it held up perfect, even the head cover didn't bother the edges. So I'm rather happy!

Started to stamp my wedges today, stamped the first one will do others during the week, I was unsure of what to stamp on them so just went with my last name, paint filled them white and they turned out well. Bit nervous at first but got the hang of it.

Shane788
7th July 2013, 05:05 PM
Yeah I was like that I have had the stamps for ages but wasn't game enough to do it on my good wedges, yeah use the flat back part of vice which you can see In the pic, put 2 strips of double sided tape on face of wedge and on the vice it's self to hold it and a bit of a cushion, where ever your stamping put masking tape over the area it helps give grip so the stamp doesn't move whilst hitting and finally use a heavy hammer and hit hard. I hit each letter about 3 times depending how it went I just kept Peeling up the tape to see how it went.
