View Full Version : Has anyone repainted a driver head?

timah!
26th January 2013, 01:40 PM
I have a driver head that I think I'd like to repaint down the track.
Before I balls it up though, I thought I'd try on an old Wishon head I still had.

Step one: stripping the original paint

So far I think it's come up well.

The next step will be a light sand.

As for paint I'm thinking some automotive paint? I'll get a spray gun for the compressor to apply it with.

Any thoughts?

I have painted a bunch of driver heads, 2 pack automotive paint is the easiest to spray and hardest wearing, just make sure you get a good quality paint that is somewhat flexible.

What did you do to get to that stage?

Looks good

Thanks guys.
I used paint stripper to get the head back to raw.

Thanks Luke for confirming auto paint.

The sand will need to a very light one, there is some coarseness to the head but I'm not sure if there is enough to absorb the paint.

Careful spraypainting in conditions like this, humidity can cause bubbles in the paint.

Primer and undercoat first will give the paint the best surface to stick to.

timah!
26th January 2013, 02:28 PM
Yeah don't think I'd do it today.
Will also find somewhere to 'cook' it post spray.
Maybe a cheap griller oven thing from Kmart.

If you take it back to metal make sure you etch prime it.

THIS

you have to prime it. And a couple of coats from rattle cans is fine

2 pack is nasty stuff though and you'd have to do it in a spray booth if you want to do it legally. If you value your health and haven't done much painting before, stick to acrylic.

Well, it is assumed that regardless of the type of paint used, a proper respirator will be worn. As far as health is concerned, cover your skin, wear decent eye protection and a proper respirator and you have nothing to worry about.

Of course, legalities are a different story and completely up to the person spraying to obey (or not), but there are plenty of people spraying their cars in 2 pack in the garage at home (myself included some years ago).

I've done it as well but was more just a heads up to timah! (if he didn't know already) that 2 pac can quite literally kill you if the appropriate precautions are not taken. In some ways acrylic is easier for inexperienced painters in that you can sand back runs without having to strip large areas but I suppose this is more of a concern with cars than something that is sub 500cc :P

the hardener in 2 pac contained cyanide. Not sure that it does anymore. Still nasty stuff.

I am not sure that rattle cans of primer will be suitable, ensure the primer is compatible with 2 pac paint.

Most acrylic based etch primers will work under anything. Enamel primer definitely wont.

A dust mask is not a respirator. And as posted above, 2 pack hardener does have isocyanide in it, a derivative of cyanide. It will literally burn the lungs. Its effects are cumulative too. They don't leave the body.

If you don't have a respirator with proper (fresh) cartridges don't use 2 pack.

You can get a nice finish with the duplicolor acrylic lacquers. They just won't be as durable as a 2 pack job.

Jackson
26th January 2013, 05:51 PM
As said above DO NOT use 2 pack with that dust mask. Go get a proper respirator, that mask is just a toy and wont protect you from anything.

Not using 2-pack guys. I was having a dig...the guys who know what I do for work will get it.

Well I for one had no idea the expertise you guys have in spray painting which leaves me to the conclusion that

1. your pretty knowledgable graffiti artists
2. panel beaters
Or probably the most likely
3. Enjoy a bit of chroming

Just a suggestion, next time use blue 60 day safe release painters tape , it has a sharper edge than the 14 day tape you have used because it doesn't have a concerntina edge, therefore no paint creep. if you do stay with this tape , make sure you press all the edges with something to lessen the chances of paint creep.
cheers blurry p.s. i'm a painter

Thanks blurry.

This one was a pure trial. Just to see 'how things work' etc.

Will look into the 60day stuff for if/when I go for a pimpin' proper.

So, although a bit of a 'quickie' job here are the results from attempt one:

2216822169
22170

I've definitely learnt a bit for attempt two. A few changes if make to the process.
This one is currently sitting in the bathroom with the heatlamps on to see how it comes up after a while.

On this one, there is a coat of primer, two coats of the white and then two of the clear. I'll bang it up a bit next week once it's fully dried to see about durability.

One thing I have learnt about respraying/ painting stuff. Its cheaper to get a spraypainter to do it. After all the paint you buy etc it will end up costing you more. Just my 2c ;)

I had a quote from a stranger of $50 to strip and 2 pac paint a head, so if you know someone I would believe that.

I got a quote from Lajosi for circa $80 to do a black treatment on my driver head and paintfill, didnt take it up though.

that didnt include sandblasting, but i can get that done locally for some small notes, local club repairer has one.

$50 is good for a proper car painter to strip, mask and paint the driver in 2 pack.

I would think $50 woud be pretty good if you gave it to him stripped.

I am seriously thinking I will strip a couple of heads and give to my friendly painter to do - he can prime whenever I will rub down and he can coat in gloss black when he has the gun loaded up.
Or if he has a nice metallic or mica loaded up might be more fun.

He doesn't keep a 2 pack matt black which I would love to do.

I have resprayed a couple of drivers which have come up great. I just gave them quick light sand to take the gloss off and slightly roughen the surface (can't remember what grit paper I used) then gave them a coat of krylon super flat black spray paint. Six months later they still look good

It sounds like a good idea until you get to the masking stage, it's painful to get it right so it doesn't look like a complete amateur job. Won't bother doing it again.
