Article by Golf Australia magazine. Some interesting decisions in there but overall I am not too displeased. Barnbougle is very heavily represented (especially when you consider the 2nd 25) but I am not against that as I rate both the courses there as the best in country and the holes there are certainly very iconic, unique, photogenic and memorable. Just a bit out of the norm to have two courses so heavily represented, usually these sorts of articles like to spread the love around to play politics and keep everyone happy.

Some absolutely cracker holes in there though. Makes me want to plan my next golf trip.

Nice article. I'm looking forward to playing StAB next year at the Vic champs now!

Not a bad list, but huge over representation of Par 3's

Holes like RMW 3, RQ 3, 10 RME, 4 RMW, 2 StAB, 4 BD etc are fare more enjoyable than any Par 3 imo

Edit: just noticed they had 2 StAB and 4 BD in there, but my point remains. Too many par 3's!

This kind of article sells golf mags ... but it doesnt take much to write, does it?

It's not like they have had to send their photographer out to get new photos of anything...

They havent used much imagination at all...

No room for 15 at Pacific?

Have only played 3 of the top 25, and one of them I can't really remember. I really have to start taking more notice.

All this course design stuff goes over my head, but even I can see there are way too many par 3's in there.

My submission had 7 out of 22 as par 3s. 1/3 is about right isn't it.

Haven't read the article but if those who made the decisions haven't played every course in Australia then the top 25 has no validity?

I thought 4/18 had to be par 3 and 4/18 had to be par 5? :)

How did the 5th at Pelican not make this list? :p

No. they don't make up 1/3 of golf holes, and they almost certainly don't make up 1/3 of the very best ones!

The best Par 3 in Australia is not as good as the 20th best Par 4/5.

In my opinion of course.

If you don't think 15 at Kingston Heath makes the top 10 holes in the country, you are kidding yourself.

It was billed as a Bucket List - holes you should see before you die. As such vibe and photogenic qualities surely came into things. I think par 3s are more likely to have that feel as you are coming through for the first time and crossing off your list. A lot of the great 4s and 5s improve with repeat play.

An awful lot of my choices are in the second 25. And some didn't make the list at all.

From what I can get out of seeing that list is that it is almost more like 25 shots that you need to play. There aren't too many long holes out there and the par threes in particular are cool shots with wedges or short irons.

Great hole, but not in the Top 10 holes in the country, not even close. Not even the best Par 3 in the country, in fact I think I prefer 10 at KH.

If anything, its a touch over bunkered, but gets a free pass from criticism.

I can see the merits of the stuff like 7 Nash Old, 7 BD, 6 NSW making it given the 'bucket list' nature of the list, and of course the 5th RMW. But outside those 4 + Narooma - thats enough Par 3's!

How can you compare stuff like 11 YY against some of the Par 4/5's that didn't make it? 2 RMW, 3 RMW, 10 RME, 17 RMW, 3 RQ, 3 BD, 15 BD, 16 Comm , 3 KH, 5 Newc, 13 Wood, 3 Tas etc.

Hell, if its a bucket lis - how does 18 Coolum not get on there?

Oh well, each to their own.

But playing your 2nd into RMW 2 or RME 10 just as examples are more thrilling than just about any Par 3.

22 out of 25 for me...with a move to Tassy ensuring the Lost Farm holes will get done sometime soon!

The 16th at Commonwealth needs to be done with the great one (Jack) so as to get the nuances and history of the hole.

I agree, too many par 3s and I would prefer a lot of the par 4/5s on your list to some of the par 3s that made it.

To be fair though, Commonwealth 16 did make the list.
