Time for a new weekly thread.

Managed 44 points (26/18. ) in a 4BBB today. Unfortunately we only managed to combine for 46 points total.:-s The 44 points was with a wipe as well!. 4 birdies on the front nine saw me turn 2 under the card. Hit every green bar one. Unfortunately, sucked one back off the 7th into the LWH for the 1st bogey of the day. Tired a little on the back as the pace started to drag. Missed a gettable Birdie putt on the last to finish square with handicap on the back.

Nice shooting Dave.
I played my 2nd comp round since Feb at Nudgee with Jarro. It was great to be out having a bash after such a long break.
My game was all over the shop, especially the short game, but still enjoyable none the less. I racked up a huge 18 points :)

Great shooting Dave, last time I shot 45 pts was playing for Fairfield RSL - off the social tees of Royal Bossley that was a par 69 rating 63, with a 66 gross. But great effort your round. It deserves a mention...

A new PB today around Vines Lakes, 6154m par 72. Shot a 74 gross 40 pts. Best comp round in 7 years. Went at it with one of our promising young talents, Tom Copley. We both had the same score off the stick for respective 9's. Played back 9 first. We had 38/36. Nothing more to say, so much reward for so much HARD work put in...

Played in a 4ball Ambrose fundraiser event yesterday, hit it like crap, with the occasional good shot thrown in. We came second with a 63 off the stick including an eagle, thanks to a 230m 3 wood to the back of the green from yours truly (the 280m drive and the 40 foot putt from 2 othe blokes had nothing to do with it). I hit one fairway all day and it was our 18th hole, hah!

Back to my usual form today, a solid 33 pts (19/14) with 1pt, 1pt, 1pt to finish. I saved all the horrible shots for the back 9. Just can't seem to stay focussed for an entire round :( In my defence one of the blokes I played with today is someone I try to avoid playing with, for various reasons he puts me off my game a bit...

Monthly Medal round today at Reddie Bay. I played very solid, but didn't make a putt of any length all day. 80/67 (41/39) was good enough for B Grade runner up.

10 over. Very ordinary.
9/14 fairways. Missed one other by 2 or 3 metres.
0 GIR.
37 putts.
1 putt par, index 1 par 4 10th the highlight.
Chipping on the front 9 killed me but it got better on the back. Found 4 green side bunkers and really struggled to get out well after the storm compacted the sand.
Still too many really bad holes. Gotta start playing more than 1 good shot per hole.

30 minutes bashing balls at the net on the 9th floor of Akihabara Yodabashi Camera and #1 offspring. First time I have been in a range that is 40m long! Pretty awesome fun though. Balls come up through the floor, 2000Y for 30 minutes, all the balls you can hit, front on and rear video displayed on a big screen in front of you. Can't wait for a real game again. Can;t believe the first one back is a crappy 4ball. Anyone got something decent on Satdee or sundee next week ?

Another shocking round. 32 points with 6 doubles and a triple.

My plan was to just make 3 pars per 9 and bogie the others. Made the 6 within the first four holes of each 9 and then imploded.

Stoopid bloody game!

Played The Vines Ellenbrook today. Was looking good at +9 off the stick after 10 holes. Had a massive blowout on 11 & 12 to be +19 after 12. Yes folks, you read that correctly, I dropped 10 stokes in two holes. Let me just say that the water on 11 can suck a fat one along with the trees on the right side of the fairway on 12.
On the positive side, I finished well with pars on 17 & 18 for a final score of 95 which is my best score for the Ellenbrook course. For some reason I seem to have issues with the Ellenbrook course, apart from my distinct lack of ability that is. Was bloody hot out there through the middle of the day too.

Well done on setting a PB for Ellenbrook GK.

Its not unusual to have a promising round blow out as the back 9 there is a fair bit more challenging than the front. Tighter and more penal usually if you miss the cut stuff. I don't think I've ever played 12 well...

Thanks Ashes.

It was my own stupid fault on 12. WIth the position of the tee yesterday, I thought I had enough skill to go around the right side of the big tree in the middle. How wrong I was. My tee shot was the gheyest of fades. Then to make things worse, I couldn't get out of the trees, even though I wasn't trying to anything too spectacular. I couldn't even manage a simple punch out to the fairway. Finally got out on my 6th shot, then put my approach into one of the many bunkers. I could go on but I'm getting depressed just thinking about it again.

On 12, look at left side bias for second shots. Takes all bunkers out of play.

Off the tee, right side of tee and driver over the bunker will keep you in the middle of the fairway.

Thanks for the tips.
That was my aim from the tee but my ambition clearly exceeded my level of talent:lol:

To be honest, I've never tried going up the left when approaching the green. It looks a bit rough. Do you generally still end up with an OK lie up that side?

idgolfguy
18th November 2012, 03:00 PM
Left side has a lot more room. Stand in the middle of the fairway on your second and look to the front of the green. The bunkers generally start from the middle to the right.

The bulk of the landing area for third shot is left.

OK, one for the memory bank for the next time I get out there.

Just had a look at an aerial pic and you're right, there is quite a bit of open space up the left which would leave with just a short chip on.

88/68 in my final PGN club champs round at The Vines to finish with 134 for 2 rounds.

5 GIR and 12 greenside bunkers... Most frustrating round I've ever played. First time I've felt like breaking a club since I broke a club earlier in the year. Was lucky not to do the choppers thing and have consecutive shit shots and managed to keep the doubles down.

12 day wait to see where I finish up in my first club champs.

43 on the front 9 at Marangaroo, equalled my personal best there. 4 pars, and one of those was a lipped out birdie putt on a par 4, boo! And also including a 7 on the closing par 5

I joined 3 older chaps and must say, not wanting to look like a dickhead in front of total strangers made me concentrate much better on swinging smoothly and not overhitting. Definitely my most consistent 9 holes ever.

I would have never known Ashes had net 68. He seemed so down about his game at times. There is lots of improvement to come in this man and has clearly dedicated himself as a student of the game. He is learning lots about what he can, should, and change. Importantly he's getting satisfying results already. Hope he wins the PGN champs.Neil is also a steady player at this stage of his life, has a reliable and repeatable swing and puts well. I can tell he played once a week for decades as he has good feel around the hole.I had an 82 today in my attempt to do a TommyG and play hung over, after an invite to wine/dine in the Vines inner circle last night at presentation night :) .Had an 8 on 7th with a 4 jack and 2 shots to get out of the greenside trap. When you play Ellenbrook one thing that's easy to forget is that the bunkers are extremely difficult compared to Lakes.Highlights were hitting 9th with hybrid pin high in two, to make birdie and a chippinski for another bird out of the greenside trap on 14th. AND the easiest swing on 15th turned out to be one of the best drives of the day. Sometimes wonder why this fact takes so much effort to understand and remember every week? The putter has gone off a little since the woods have come good. I need to stop thinking with that train of thought and just hit the ball or make the putt. It's an example of poor thinking and setting up to fail.

-1 in Par comp  @ Kapunda this morning.
79/74 played as real golf.

It was a mixed bag today. Chipped and putted well and the rest was so so. Happy with the way I drove the ball off the tee without a lot of success. I either hit the fairway dead centre or it ended up in a crappy spot. A few bad alignment choices with wind direction turned well struck drives into bad shots.

First comp round with shortened tipped Driver. Hit as many fairways on the front nine as I normally do for 18 but couldn't hit a green with an iron in my hand.
Was happy with how the DCI 962's felt thou. Strong high ball flight just the way I like to hit it.

6/15 Fairways hit - 4 in, 2 out
7/15 Dead Drives - 3in, 4 out
6 GIR - 1 in, 5 out
28 putts
1 birdie and 1 double

Nice way to finish a looooong week ;)

Yep.

Although when I missed a 10ft bird on 14 (started on the 10th), then again from 5ft on 17, I thought I was gonna blow it. Also missed a 7ft par putt on 18 for my first bogey, which would have had me shoot an even 36.

I started the the back nine (off 1) with a double, and then sunk a 20 footer for bogey on 2, and then doubled 4, where I had to hit it 30m and 30* backwards onto the fairway from up against a tree. Wiped 5 after clipping a tree branch with the tee shot and kicking further left into trees. Had to play it LH from up against the trunk, and it bounced off a skinny tree 20ft in front and went left again, dead up against another big gum. I had to play yet another LH shot to try and get to the fairway. Never had to play 2 in a row before!!! I then missed a 5ft birdie putt on 6. But I holed a big 25ft+ bird on 8 for 4pts to get me back on track.

Yeah it was well worth bringing the sticks... Gold Creek is a nice course, the greens were hard and true (I hit one green with a flush 9 iron that landed about 10 or 12 metres short of the pin and ended up rolling off the edge) and there are some really challenging holes. The fairways aren't as lush as back home but we don't have the heat to contend with. But gosh it's long! I declined the offer of a cart... it's gotta be a few hundred metres between the green and the next tee on a few holes, so I felt like I'd played 27 holes by the end! I'll know better next time (and I reckon I could save a few shots now I know the course better too).

It's been an amazing year really. Got presentations on Friday night, 3 honour board events including club champs, and a hole in one to cap it all off. Never would've picked it.

IMHO Gold Creek is long and somewhat boring. You hit driver on almost every hole, and most holes there is little or no reward for taking a braver line. The greens are hard and fast but generally smallish,

Its a bloody long walk - there are a few 200m wanders between holes.
