Advance weather forecast here
(http://www.accuweather.com/en/au/melbourne/26216/month/26216?monyr=2/01/2013)
Please double check the table in post#1 to make sure your accomm and golf details are right.

Thur, Fri, Sun accomm: andigolds Park View Hotel on St Kilda Rd. (http://www.viewhotels.com.au/st_kilda_road_parkview/index.aspx) He's supplied us the very generous rate of $62.50 per person twin share, with option for people to room up as 4's for below $50 a head. An absolute steal to be so cheap so close to the CBD. No prepayment required, one person in each room to put up a credit card on check in & then just pay on checkout. 10 days before for final numbers is enough notice.

Sat accomm: Here. (http://www.takeabreak.com.au/Rye/BaysandPeninsulas/Beach-Holiday-Apartments.htm) 15 people officially booked in for Sat accomm. $70 a head.

Fri golf: Southern GC (http://www.southerngolfclub.com.au/welcome/index.mhtml). $60, carts are an extra $45, pull carts $5 hire. We have the last 5 groups booked from approximately 12:30 onwards. Should give interstaters arriving that morning a bit of time to get to the hotel, or straight to the club and have a quick meal or drink. Daylight no issue for any of these times as Daylight savings will be in full swing.

Sat golf: 6 tee times, 12:00PM onwards at St Andrews Beach (http://www.standrewsbeachgolf.com.au/). Cost will be $85 & includes cart or $69-50 without. Please note if you decide prior you don't want a cart but then want one on the day they will be $40.

Sun golf: Confirmed, 5 slots, 9:20AM to 10AM at Moonah Links Legends Course (http://www.moonahlinks.com.au/welcome/index.mhtml). Cost of $95 & includes cart.

Mon golf: Spring Valley GC (http://www.springvalleygolf.com.au/cms/) - 7:56AM hitoff. Cost of $82.50, no cart.

So, a total of $200 for golf on Saturday & Sunday, with $20 going towards prizes. Or if you wish, please pay the full $342.50 for all four rounds golf, or the full payment for whatever rounds you are playing + $20 for prizes. Full payment preferred but instalments OK too. Final payment by 22nd Jan 2013.

Meals / activities:

Thurs night: Had in Lime restaurant @ Parkview Hotel. Chicken was magnificent but the Lamb Wellington is still my choice here.

Fri night: BBQ and salad had. Some regurgitated. Andy has provided a conference room for "activities". They will be good fun and include the all important BYO alcohol (which some should steer clear of next year!).

Sat night: BBQ at St Andrews Beach Golf Club. Drinks must be purchased from the club but we can bring whatever else we like. FG can get hold of some meat (stop sniggering you lot!) and salads. Need to know final numbers a week or so before. Probably around $10 a head to cover costs.

Sun night: Was the awesome idea of Chinatown with beers @ Young & Jacksons hotel.

Check about flying soon after Bambino too. The boss said you need to be careful about clots and stuff (not a biggy, just something to be aware of).

I don't think Woodlands is a starter, I got a text back from the GM today and it says

Hi Andrew

I am currently at home but have looked at the 15th Feb which not surprisingly is already booked.

Of course we would like to accommodate the group and I suggest that if an alternative date can be found the best person to speak to at the club would be Richard Tullberg.

I will be back at the club in a week and happy to chat then if that suits

Regards

John

Hmmm, disappointing, but not to worry, thanks very much for trying Andi. Any other suggestions or should we try Eastern GC?

Well I thought I would see if maybe it works to swap them and play SV on Friday arvo and Woodlands on Monday morning. I'll check with the clubs on Monday and see what I can do. Otherwise I can try Peninsula, with 2 courses we may stand more chance for the Friday there. After that we may be forced to the clay belt. :)

Actually, probably not a bad idea. Might be easier for interstaters to get back to the airport too, as they just go straight up the Nepean Hwy. If you wouldn't mind seeing if the dates can be swapped it would be greatly appreciated. If we have to go to Peninsula (Sth course please, I played that much better than the Nth ;-) ) then we may need to see if SV is available for Monday anyway. Cheers Andi!

St Andrews Beach have advised me that they do have a BBQ area that we can use free of charge. Just supply our own meat, buy drinks from them and all will be sweet. Meat can be organised through them but I think it would be a mile cheaper if we decide to go this way to get our own.

Could be an option, considering we could probably do Andi's dinner idea on the Friday night as a welcome to the Champs, then everything is informal after that! I think the golf is costing everyone enough money that we may need to cut down some costs on the meals. Then those that want to go to a RSL or pub for a further drink can, and those that want to be soft and go home to "look after themselves" and try and win champs the next day can too.

Consensus?

Avalon flights at $49, although it flies out after 10pm coming back on weeknights.

Book the flights anyway, that way the money is gone and it would be a shame to waste it... :-)

Plus, we've gotta have "The Boss" for the first(?) Ozgolf VIC Champs!

Tulla is the best one but if a few of you have to go to Avalon (in between Melbourne and Geelong) I'm sure we can work something out.

I have a good mate who works for virgin, so I can do better price wise, but I am happy to spend an extra $100 on flights if it makes things easier in the long run.

That is similar to what I looked at, but for Tullamarine... $69 + baggage.

AndyP
4th October 2012, 11:32 AM
Most likely flights on the cheap to play all 4 rounds, while only using up 2 days leave (Friday/Monday):

Jetstar Brisbane-Avalon - Thurs 6:25p - 9:45p

Jetstar Tullamarine-Brisbane Mon 3:35p-4:50p
Jetstar Tullamarine-Brisbane Mon 5:50p-7:05p
Jetstar Avalon-Brisbane - Mon 10:15p-11:25p

Virgin might do a sale in response soon? They are at $105 ($85 from Gold Coast) with $12 extra for baggage each way at the moment.
They have many flights in and out of Tullamarine, including the option of coming in Friday morning.

If flights could be coordinated with someone else, worst case we could get a hire car to share, if we can't get a lift or get a shuttle.

If I can get reasonably priced flights and coordinate with someone else, I AM IN.

I feel much the same.... Happy to hire a car if that works out easier....

As you are aware, the leave factor doesn't bother me, and if someone wanted a thursday round, I would be keen for that as well.

Guess it depends on what everyones thoughts are regarding travel vs. I will just do my own thing.

Andy, are you travelling on you own? No family?

Other Qld lads, who is doing the family option vs. the golf weekend?

PeteyD
4th October 2012, 12:16 PM
Schools in so no family option for me (fingers crossed). I'd be interested in going down earlier on Thursday to settle into the hotel etc.

Some time in Feb the QLD Female gridiron team is going down there to play the Western Foxes. Hope it isn't this weekend ... but if it is the one before or after I may be down for a week :D

AndyP
4th October 2012, 12:23 PM
Families don't belong on golf weekends. It's just me.

I would try to work on Thursday, to preserve my limited leave and not be away too long.

Avalon Thurs night, Tullamarine late Monday arvo would work well.

LeftyHoges
4th October 2012, 12:37 PM
How long to get from Avalon to AndiGolds hotel in St Kilda?

Avalon is around 60kms or 50-60 mins.

Tullamarine is 30kms or 30-35 mins.

Avalon you do get to go over the westgate bridge though. :-D

I will probably bring my trailer (or borrow someone else's) so I can shuttle a few guys from airports if need be, would be happy to make a trip to each one, multiple to both is asking a bit! ;-)

Not sure about anyone else but if you want to fly to there (or if there is a group of you) I'm happy to come pick you up at that time. I'm a night owl anyway and if you and / or a group are the only ones I have to pick up I can grab you on the way through. I'd consider Friday morning, but I reckon it would be painful getting across town from the airports for a midday game. The missus already tried to tell me long weekends are 3 days not 4, so I'm not pushing for 5.

Thanks. I'm not sure how long to hold off on booking flights to see what others are doing.

No probs.

Tough call to make, are Iain, Marto or PeteyD anywhere near you? They're the only others from QLD to express any real interest so far, apart from Courty, but he would probably fly direct Cairns to Melb I would assume if he decides to come.

Shouldn't be a problem. If you were at Avalon by 10ish, or Tulla by 10:30ish, that's stacks of time. The main problem with that though is you have to add the extra hour for our daylight savings time to your flight.

QANTAS at 7AM leave for 10:20 arrival at Tulla is your best choice if price isn't an option. Plus you'd save yourself $62.50 for the room at andigolds hotel.

That's what I'm gonna do for WA. Never thought of this for QLD, and got charged $30 each way for the bag (that's actually pretty decent though, really)

Why Cooly airport, Petey? Any savings on flights would be gone on petrol, wouldn't it?
How much does Poverty Star want to take golf crubs?I'm not sure. It depends on what weight you want to take.

Golf clubs in a carry bag by themselves are generally short of 15kg, then add in shoes, etc. You could fit most of your clothes for a weekend into carry on.

$20 baggage cost with JetPoo, which I assume is their minimum 15kg.

The clubs are included in your checked baggage allowance I believe... as per http://www.jetstar.com/au/en/planning-and-booking/baggage/bulky-items so it'll depend on what they weigh and how much weight you've paid for.

Virgin are a bit better, they charge per piece and one piece can be up to 32kgs (as per http://www.virginaustralia.com/au/en/plan/baggage/oversized-fragile-items/). I just booked flights to Canberra for a trip I'm doing next month and it was $15 for one piece, $45 for 2 pieces (each way - so I ended up paying $90 for the return trip for 2 bags, one will be the clubs and the other will be normal luggage). Speaking of which if anyone is up for a hit in CBR on the weekend of the 24th/25th November....

I'm still keen to come to these Vic champs by the way but won't be able to confirm for at least a couple of weeks as I will need to organise leave etc.

Avalon in no traffic is 50 minutes to the hotel, in traffic you can add between 30 - 60 minutes extra.
Tullamarine in no traffic is 20 minutes to the hotel, in traffic you can add between 20 - 40 minutes extra.

There is a shuttle bus from avalon but it drops off at Southern cross station and you have to get a train and tram or a taxi to the hotel from there. It's $22 one way and you need a myki card to use the train and tram, minimum cost $14, or a cab for around $12-15.

From Tullamarine the Frankston and Peninsula Airport Shuttle (FAPAS) drops off and picks up at the hotel for $19 one way.

Could well be. Peninsula are playing a bit of hard ball and look like only booking us in at corporate rates. Nice course but for $120 (with dinner) I don't think it's for us. Maybe Eastern GC could be back on the radar. Settlers Run could be an option but its a similar course to St Andrews Beach and Moonah. Probably not overly easy for those who spray the ball. Eastern should be a little in the cheaper side and while its hilly, it's a nice parkland track that we can play off the whites for a little relief before getting into "the business".

I'll be driving past Avalon on the Friday no matter where we are playing, so I'm happy to pick people up.

Possible cheap and cheerful options for Friday if you can't get on the premium tracks:
-Albert Park - yes I know it's not in the league of the other options, but it's reasonably close to Andy's Chateau and not too far from the two airports.
-Sandringham - we can all close our eyes and listen to the sound of BMW engines in the background and imagine we're playing Royal Melbourne.

OK, Friday golf, lets get a bit of brainstorming going on here...

Eastern GC - probably around $50-$60 green fees, a 30ish minute drive and a nice course. Bit on the hilly side though. Difficulty rating 6.5/10
Settlers Run - Around $60 green fees, 50 minutes drive. Reports are its a nice course, haven't played it myself. Similar style to Sat / Sun courses.
Albert Park - cheap as they come and unfortunately I believe the course reflects it. 5 minutes walk. Difficulty rating probably 3 / 10.
Sandringham - one of the better "truly public tracks" on the sandbelt. Probably around $40 green fees and 20 minutes drive. Difficulty rating 5 / 10 and the Redcliffe equivalent of all of them if I had to pick one.
Growling Frog - $40 green fees and from all reports a good track. 50 minutes drive and looks the same style course as Sat / Sun. Probable difficulty rating 6 or 7/10.
Devilbend - $25 green fees and looks a nice track. Over an hours drive though. Likely difficulty rating 5 or 6 / 10
Yarra Bend - around $30 green fees and 20 minutes drive. Ok track, not much more you can say about it though. Probably a Redcliffe equivalent but a little easier. Difficulty rating 4 / 10.
Yering Meadows - $55 green fees and a nice track. Again though, similar style to Sat / Sun courses. Difficulty rating 6.5 / 10.
Southern GC - Considering its been 14 years since I played it I can't really remember that much about it, but I do believe it's a nice track. Green fees of probably around $75 and a 35 minute drive. Difficulty rating 6 / 10.
Kingswood GC - I have reciprocal rights there so MAY be able to get us on. 35 minutes drive, $75ish green fees and a very nice track. Difficulty rating 6.5 or 7 / 10 depending on firmness of greens.

For reference to anyone who's played QLD champs I'm rating Pelican as an 8 in difficulty in this years conditions.

Any other suggestions?

I'm leaning towards this way too if we can get on there. Nice course, maybe a shade on the expensive side at $75 (maybe we could get Dennis to "introduce" us for $60) but a good quality course thats not a LONG drive and still on the sandbelt for the interstaters.

Right after you've done the dishes, vacuumed the house, washed the car, shampooed the dog and put the toilet seat down is the best time in my experience.

Another suggestion for 'cheapish' Friday golf, close to the city - Yarra Bend? Not a bad track and not a links style. Thanks Chinaski, got that one noted in post #126. Not a bad idea for cheap, easy game, might be plan #B or #C. Leaning heavily towards Southern GC right now.

Wasn't there a separate offer of mini-van by another member?

Ozdevil has (I'm assuming) a Tarago or something similar. He's only playing Saturday / Sunday though so while we can use him for the run down the Freeway and back, we'll need to figure out something else. If a mini-van is booked by Marto and Popper and used Thursday, I'm still happy to come pick up whoever I need to Friday morning.

Will we have enough for a State of Origin?

At this stage for Friday we have 6 Vic's (if we cheekily include muldude, he may be the "swinger" if we need one more for either side) and 8 "other"ers. But more Vics should be coming in. Could well be a nice game for the SOO. I'll see how numbers come up for these and work it in if I can. If a few have to miss out on the SOO match, then so be it, I'll either do handicap priority as the WA boys have done, or go booking order (probably more fair, the quicker you get in, the better chance you have of playing). Great idea, timah!

I'm happy to do a pickup at Avalon on the Friday morning on the way through. I've got a Subaru outback, which means I can fit 3 or 4 people, depending on size, or two people if Courty is playing and I need extra room for baggage. Happy to drop people off at the hotel on the way through if time permits if that makes things a bit easier.

As for the Friday round venue, I would suggest that somewhere close to the hotel is the best bet. Yarra Bend is probably in the wrong direction - if we're going cheap and cheerful I'd pick Sandringham, otherwise one of those sandbelt courses sounds fine. It's not like I know anything about proper golf courses, so I'll leave the decision to the experts.

Thanks for the offer Larry, not sure if any of the QLD boys ended up going Avalon but good to know you're happy to pick up from there if needed.

Yeah, I think I'm gonna keep it close to the hotel if I can, 40 minutes to Southern isn't too bad, compared to 30ish minutes to Sandringham as Plan B, and maybe Yarra Bend (25 mins) or Eastern GC (35 mins) as Plan C. Southern is not hard (in my opinion) and I think people will enjoy it more than a Sandringham or Yarra Bend.

Executive decision made...

Southern GC it is.

$60 a head. Carts are $45 if you want one, hire pull carts are $5 for those that need them. We have the final 5 tee spots starting from approx 12:30PM on the 15th.

Unfortunately Southern do require full pre-payment for the round a week beforehand, does anyone see an issue with that? I can make the trip $260 for the golf or even $342.50 all up to include Spring valley and we can get all that paid for prior.

Yes Lefty I'm still at Southern, but AndyP was right I'm non-playing at the mo. Having said that I'm sure I could have negotiated the tee times with the GM, seems you are sorted though.

Have been lurking Nick, just trying to work out how I can swing this.

Those who have not played it before will enjoy the round, and at that time of the year it will be in very good nick. Greens will be super fast and super firm

Good to see you're interested at least Chappy! Would be great to have you on board (a little pressure implied ), but fully understand if not able.

That's why I thought to go with Southern, give them a true picture of Melbourne Sandbelt golf without the scariness of a Victoria or Yarra Yarra (not that we'd be able to get on them anyway). Fast Firm February Sandbelt greens are an experience in themselves.

I'll put you down as an interested party!

Lefty, how far is moonah from Melb city?

If you get lucky with the traffic, about 90 minutes from the hotel. Another 10 from the CBD itself.

Unlucky with traffic you're looking at over 2 hours.

On Saturday morning to drive down will probably be somewhere in the middle.

For further interest in payment, I guess I'll try to give everyone as much time to get confirmations / permissions as I can, so will probably send out a confirmation of all details at the end of this week for a deposit. Spring Valley requires a hefty deposit, as well as $100 for Moonah. Payments as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated so I can finalise bookings, purchase trophies etc but please don't feel pressure to pay straight away if you can't.

Both on the same property but Legends is much more interesting to play than the Open.

Who are the top shelf pissheads on this trip with SMS and DC looking less than confirmed?
I'm more or less no chance of going.

Hoges set a very impressive standard at Pelican Waters.

Don't know quite a few of the VIC boys so hard to comment. We know Popper, timah, Lucas and myself will give it a nudge. Some sneakies in Marto and maybe PeteyD. Chinaski brews his own so there's a sign of a true pisshead.

You would expect a bloke with the name of Muldude would know how to party but sadly I think that has to do with where he plays more than how he parties.

Don't worry too much Benno, you'll have some drinking buddies.

I am more like piss-wreck, than top shelf piss-head.....I love being on it, but it really wrecks me. All my partying is done after hours though. Golf is golf, partying is partying, and like a wife and mistress, they should never meet... I will be up for one good night, but I think I will try and be well behaved.

Going from the champs up here, Lucas and Lefty both have the heart of Phar lap in the piss stakes. Marto enjoys long bus rides when pissed, so he maybe good until he wants to go 'on tour' again.

If I'm a pisshead then Gillard is a top shelf PM!

We should all get him blind, and post heaps of stuff in the proshop, it will be drunk buying at it's best.

It's true .... he even lets me outdrive him when he's hungover.

I know Muldude.....be afraid.

And don't get into a drinking bout BEFORE tee off....it can and most probably WILL happen.

On a more personal note....still trying to get clearance for the weekend games.

I like to think of it differently. More so a purveyor of fine hand crafted ales...

Actually, your probably right... I am a bit of a pisshead. Never during a round though, it's not my thing. But I'll give it a nudge on Saturday night. Who know's I might have a bit of a 'travel keg setup' by then in operation.

Courty (unconfirmed but confirmed interest)

I'm as good as confirmed, just got to get some leave approved at work tomorrow.

I'll probably fly down on Thursday sometime, and home late Monday or early Tuesday depending on flights.

I'm also in for all of the accommodation and am fine to pay for all golf in advance.

Can't wait for my blue balls trophy.
