View Full Version : AndyP's visit to Sydney

Thanks to cheap Pre-Xmas flights, I'm heading to Sydney in May to watch the currently pathetic but soon to be mighty Hawks take on the Swans. I will be travelling with my brother and my mate.

I will be in Sidonee from 1:30p Saturday 22nd until 9p Monday 24th. So what the hell do I do for all of this time? Sounded like a good idea when I booked it.

The footy is from 2 until 5 on the Sunday. I will need to visit my sister at some stage during the trip (maybe Sat or Mon night). And I have preliminary plans for a golf round on the Monday (St Michaels and Bonnie Doon are the front runners, The Coast is a chance).

I guess some alcohol consumption will be involved. Maybe a visit to the casino.

I have not booked accommodation and have not sorted any transport. I am not familiar with the Olympic City in the slightest. Help! What sort of area should we stay? Suggestions?

P.S I have been to Taronga Zoo, so I won't need to visit there again.

Well, I'm only new to Sidonee myself, so I can't help very much... but I have been to the Casino - it's worth a look. (If you were a girl, I'd say SHOP! SHOP! SHOP!) :D

And of the golf courses, Hubby says that he thinks St Mick's is preferable to Bonnie Doon, although both are good. I'd catch you up for a game on the Monday, but unfortunately, pennants is on Mondays and I am in the team atm. (We'll see if my form holds up well enough to keep getting selected... )

Andy...I would be pleased if you could review our design work at Bonnie Doon. Nothing less than 5000 words please.
You can also say hello to Brett Ogle in the Pro Shop.

I don't know if I could swing much of a deal. I know the Superintendent pretty well, and a couple of the committe blokes, but noone in the office.

But he will try hard

Speaking of travel Kev, I am heading down Mexico way this week. If I bump into any of the crew sipping Gin and Tonics in the Clubhouse of one of those ritzy Mornington courses, would you like any messages passed on ?

PS. Business only...no golf clubs in tow !

Nah, I'll stay on top of the ground  would'nt want to go that low :D they've got each other now, that should be punishment enough =P~

I'd add "sitting on the verandah being fanned by little black boys wearing white tunics", but the weather down there is so cold atm that I doubt you'll find them with G & T's.... they'll be huddled around a fireplace with a bottle of red (or Stones Ginger) to hand....

Andy, your a father. WHAT THE HELL are you doing getting golf/footy/drinking trips away?

Thats completely irresponsible on your part to do that while us poor buggars are stuck at home seemingly for ever.

AP,

Ditch the Hawk's game, you know the result already anyway. A game has been planned for Liverpool GC on Sunday 23rd. Now, it's been organised through ISG, so i don't want to hear any bickering.

I'd give Bonnie Doon a run though - there are 2 courses I really want to play in Sydney, BD and Ryde-Parramatta - both of which G69's firm has had some impact on (please note - not the reason i want to play there). Ryde-Parra's open days are Friday's, hence my dissapointment in my wifes decision to stop at Port Maq on the way back down the coast to Sydney.

But please give Star City Casino a MISS - it's a dive. If you want dodgy gambling venues with carpet on the walls, there are numerous RSL clubs around town - and the beer and food is cheaper there too.

Thanks I'll take that on board.

That sounds like bragging to me.

I'm not really interested in the footy game, just wanted to check out the SCG.

Fishy, Have you played St Michaels? :?: It seems to get a better wrap than Bonnie Doon. :?

I'm not sure I'll be able to keep my brother and mate away from the casino. Let's assume that our visit there won't last long and we will move on.

We don't even know what area we should stay in. What's the public transport like down there?

Guys, a Sydney footy trip has been in the pipeline for a few years. The Cheap flights made it a done deal. Buy tickets first, ask missus second.

Got the footy tickets. Was $23 each for General Admittance. That doesn't seem too bad.

We are thinking of staying somewhere around Pott's Point. It seems pretty central.
It seems less likely that we will play St Michaels now. Noticed that the green fee is upto $80, from $60 when I checked previously. And it is further away, and we will be relying on cabs or public transport.
Looks like Bonnie Doon is the front runner now.

Potts Point isn't the easiest place to commute from if you want access to golf courses and the footy - mind you, where's the footy being played? SCG or Stadium Australia? Potts Pt is however close to the Cross :?

Are you going to be getting a car? If so, ignore the above paragraph.

$23 to see the Hawks? Surely it's on telly somewhere - you're already about 4-over par for schooners at that price.. ;)

AndyP
6th May 2004, 02:56 PM
Where would you suggest we stay? We don't have a car. :?:

We need access to the city (if it has the good nightspots), the SCG (on Sunday arvo), Airport (arrival and departure) and Bonnie Doon GC (ATM anyway). Wouldn't mind being able to get to a ferry to get to Manly.

Hawks will have turned the corner by then, Fishy. :smt117 [-o<
(Imagine the chicken is a swan. Actually I just wanted to use that emoticon  )

Fishman Dan

I think you should concentrate more on the icon after the chicken ;)

SCG is a decent uphill hike from Potts Pt - though i wouldn't do it myself. Short, sharp cab fare. Central enough to Bonnie Doon as well if you're going to get a cab ($20 or so?).

I was initially thinking that game was at Stadium Australia - officially the worst venue to watch a footy game. Never again, never ever ever will i go there watch an AFL game.

As for nightclubs, Oxford St isn't far away (you're married, yes?) for nightclubs (they're not all gay bars - apparently). Or are you more the pub'n'Fox Sports type like myself?

Manly Ferry is a bus to the Quay away.. not difficult for even the anti-public transporters like myself.

Head off to Sydney tomorrow. Have booked golf at Bonnie Doon for Monday afternoon. It's not too late for one of you Sydneysiders to change your mind about playing. The stories these other guys tell about me aren't true.

Accommodation is booked at the Central Railway Motel. My bro-in-law tells me this is not good, and is a little too close to Redfern. :? 8-[ Oh well, it was cheap, has good access to the places we need and we only need a place to store our stuff and rest our heads.

Now to find some good drinking holes..... =P~

What happened to the chicken catching emoticon :?:

Fishman Dan
21st May 2004, 03:25 PM
Close to Redfern doesn't mean you are IN Redfern - you'll be right there, and like you said you're pretty close to everything you need to get to.

Don't want to chuck the Swannies game and come to Liverpool with us?

As for pubs etc, you can find any number of crusty establishments around you. You're not far from Oxford St if you want to go to decent nightclubs etc, otherwise there's Glebe in the other direction, and a little further away is Newtown when you'll get good food and pubs - the Bank Hotel (if it's still called that) in Newtown has an awesome, truly the very very best Thai restaurant underneath it (Sumalee i think - but it's been years since i've been there).

No chance of not watching the Hawkies game. Unfortunately, my sister and bro-in-law want to come as well. Sydney supporters. If they are typical Swans supporters, they will boo anything that goes against them.

It's a shame that the Liverpool game isn't early in the morning. Might have made the effort regardless of the hangover.
Should we be talking about that game on this site. :?

Well, it was a good game, with a bad result. I won't bite, Fishy, but let's just say that Sydney had 25 men playing for them.

Can you remind me how Carlton went against them earlier this year, because I seem to have forgotten.

I never really had time to go to an internet place while down there, but they were bloody everywhere. As well, as backpacker places and 7-11s.

I felt like a real country boy in that city. A lot more "advanced" than Brisbane.

You were in the middle of backpacker central.. but the presence of internet cafe's and 'convenience' stores doesn't necessarily equate to 'more advanced' ;) But hope you had fun in the Big Smoke all the same, cowboy.

It is however 'more up itself' than most other places. I like Sydney, but I only go to the bits that interest me, there's plenty more to this beast.

For an interesting view of Sydney, read 'Leviathan' by John Birmingham - author of "He Died With a Falafel In His Hand"

g69, I really enjoyed the course. It was in good nick, although I struggled with the fast greens, and couldn't bloody read them. Plenty of holes where I would have had to think about strategy, if I was playing any good. Do you want to know about my thoughts on any particular holes?
I also saw Bob Hawke in the clubhouse, and Mario "dingbat" Fenech on the practice putting green after sundown.

Fishy, by "advanced", I meant further along in evolution from Brisbane. In general we found people to be not very helpful. Even got a "f*cka you" from a waiter in Circular Quay.
