With numbers down at Pelican Waters this year, and a field which is more national at Perth, should the WA champs be considered the true OZgolf Championship?

Switch QLD and WA if you want the best chance of good weather and fairness to all.

Not going to happen though, is it?

It makes the most sense to do it thusly:

VIC - Feb/March
QLD - July/Aug
WA - Oct/Nov

The VIC courses are at their best at that time of the year, as is the weather. QLD weather in July/Aug is perfect for golf, again courses would be in good nick then. Possibly easier to accomodate a large group at that time of year as well? And WA this time of the year is ideal.

I don't see what the issue would be in holding the QLD Champs a bit earlier (I would like some input from the QLD'ers if this is an issue). The QLD Champs have historically been held anywhere from the first week in September to the last week in November, so you aren't really messing with any "tradition" anyway.

The object of these championships should be to involve the most Ozgolfers possible, with the most opportunity for Ozgolfers to attend all of them if possible, made easier by spreading them out over the course of the year (and not on *&%#ing Fathers Day, or Muvvers Day either thanks).

I remain in support that the Ozgolf champs be the final event of the year. You blokes are quite capable of organising the minors around that :-)

I'm sick of hearing about the 'Fathers day debacle. Perhaps if someone else wanted to help take the load off Shavey and put in the work to find an alterative, there might have been an alternative. Given that no one did, suck eggs.

I completely agree with Jack but in order for that argument to have any weight I think the greater OzGolf community needs to support a version of the OzGolf Champs existing in multiple states, not just Qld. Which might never happen and this is understandable. This is a forum with Qld roots. And from what I know of Queerlanders, they are backward as f**k.

JC, I agree with you. I don't think WA could expect a much bigger field than you got this year and full credit to the interstaters who committed and followed through to make it a great event from all accounts. I am not sure a move in 2013 would make much of a difference to the field.

However, as with all things WA and OzGolf, I think simmsy should have the last say.

State government is worried about losing too many votes from the hicks up north (who are an hour west and get daylight saving by default).

There was a daylight saving questionnare done by the Bligh government about 2 years back and they found the majority of SEQ want it. The majority of FNQ don't want it. Neither want a split timezone.

Not really. Most states seem to be organising a major event now. So you could quite comfortably rotate the national title each year if you wanted to. If you wanted to keep it as the event which has the biggest number of participants then it seems it's pretty much gonna stay in Qld isn't it. I mean, this seems a lean year by Qld champs standards, yet it still will probably have the largest attendance. Maybe the leanness is coming from the other champs being organised and spreading the player pool around. But the qld champs was always the champs because it was the only one around. Now there's more. I say make the vic champs the national ones this season.

I voted for the qld champs in the poll because that's where I'm from, and it's highly likely I'll make it to another stats champs - I can barely make it to the local ones. But I think spreading the love is just fine.

And no, it doesn't matter. If someone is willing to go to the effort to organise, then I say give them all a chance.

Andy was too diplomatic to say this, so I'll spell out what I understand to be the Ozgolf position.

There is no Ozgolf National Championships as such.

There are state championships for each state. None are more important than the other.

However, Benno_R, 3puttpete, Peppas and myself may have set the precedent by becoming golf tourists this year. We may have to do something in future years (similar to the Player of the Year thing), where the majors are subject to wider recognition.

For the purpose of that discussion (which might be worth a new thread), an ACT event, whether it be the Christmas Classic or the Birthday Bash should be included.

I can assure you that in previous years, the Queensland Event was THE Ozgolf Champs.

Things may have changed as the world has moved on.

This....no idea why this got dredged up.

Qld was the largest numbers historically, however a large number of people had to travel to get to them, so when other options with better courses come up (eg Vic Champs) the travel and golf dollars will nearly always go to the best course options.

All things have a finite life span. The format of the Qld champs it seems has reached its use by date. There is a way forward and that is value for money and camaraderie.

I like to think of the OZgolf champs, like the Masters and the Open.

They don't have the Queensland, US or British prefix, but it is sometimes put there, to distinguish them from similar events that followed them years later.
