I recently went to my local proshop to be fitted for a 4 Wood. I currently carry a 5 Wood/7 Wood combo. I decided to go for a 4 Wood as I struggle to hit a 3 Wood, and required a bit more distance from my 5 Wood. this would also help close the gap between my Driver and 5 Wood. through the course of the fitting my club pro talked me into a 5 Wood with a shaft lengthened to that of a 3 Wood. Has any one tried this setup before and has it worked well?

Personally the longer shaft is an absolute waste, I don't think your pro knows what he is talking about but I'm sure the otters on the forUm will share there opinion

If you struggle with a 5wd lengthening the shaft isn't going to make it any easier.
Sure he didn't say shorten it?

I don't struggle with the 5Wood I normally hit it really well, Its the 3Wood that I struggle with.

i tried the old lengthen the 5wood to 3wood length a little while back. provided me nothing positive.

am now bagging a TEE xcg-3 4wood, that is the answer.

Superb work. Tho it has a big head and hoof the XCG-3 is crazy easy to hit/elevate and is around .830 COR. With an XCG-3 4 wood you'd be hitting it as long or longer than 90% of 3 woods. It's also got a pretty high face (yet satill easy to elevate, a winner) so is fine off the tee box. Finding a fit like this can be a game changer.

A mid capper mate used to have a prehistoric Tight Lies, good club but he was missing out on modern tech. It also didn't overly suit him, he likes a heavy stable shaft and setup. Anyways i put him into a high COR 4 wood i knocked up at 3 wood length (the extra 1/2" was never going to worry him, he actually likes his clubs to feel a little long) with a 78 gram shaft at a fair clip of a swingweight. He dropped 2 genuine shots off his handicap (15 to 13) in about 2 months strictly due to this club. Second shots on par 5's picked up comfortably 25 meters and he hit it string straight for weeks at a time. Finding a properly suited fairway club (3, 4, 5 wood, whatever depending on the individual) can make a genuine difference.

I have 4 wood coming - 17.5

A 4 wood might be the answer.

What do you struggle with on the 3 wood, hitting the centre of the face, or hitting the thing straight, or both?

love my 17.5* 910F (4 wood).
Though I adjusted it down to 15.5* as i don't carry a 3 wood.

not, had a ping g10 4 wood, did nothing extra for me, spend 120 bucks for a lesson at MGA probably saved me few grand in trying to blame the club :P

I think if you stick with it you'll find the right swing for your 3 wood, I used to shy away from it, the more I did the less confident I was with it, then after the lesson and forcing my self to use the 3 wood for 6 months it's a must use club for my second shot on long par 5s.

I struggle to hit the 3 wood straight, and don't get much height out of it.

I did use my new 5 wood over the weekend to great effect, after a bit of practice I was hitting it 220 to 230 metres off the deck with a high launch, pretty happy with that, plus the club pro will put it back for free if I don't like it after a few rounds.

230m off the deck with a 5 wood. That's impressive.

Thanks I am quite happy with that distance, though I hit my previous 5 wood 210+. Hopefully it proves a good choice and I continue to hit it consistantly

Well you sure don't need to worry about finding a FW anymore. I'd kill for that in a 3 wood even.

That happened to me. I didn't hit it much & then lost confidence in hitting it. It now sits in my bag watching me hit either driver or 2 hybrid.

Yeah I started off just using it on perfect teed up lies then started to use it a bit more everywhere, also start by placing it a bit towards the back and hit it like a hybrid also helped a bit for me, and moved it forward gradually when I go confident.
