View Full Version : HELP!!! first time shaft pulling

aym

Saw an video on pulling shaft with out a shaft puller, instead of waiting for mine to arrive I decided to give it a try, but the fiber seems to have split at tip, can this shaft still be used? it's a chuck.

And should I use the heat gun on if for another 10 min?

Noooooooooooooooo!

Did you twist?

aym
27th April 2012, 07:14 PM
a yeah, big no no? I measured it from the bit that is still good it's roughly 3 wood length lol..

I had a look at this video lol maybe that guy did a bit differently to me..

Yikes. Tipping a Nunchuk is a no no tho:(

aym
27th April 2012, 07:19 PM
found this post, the guy seems to done the same as me,

http://secretinthedirt.com/index.php/forum/133-driver-golf-shafts/10941-nunchuk-driver-shaft-unique-concept?limit=25&start=1100

So is there anyway to get the head off? doesn't seem to want to move at all....

Well, now the shaft is rooted you could simply apply more heat and twist the rest of the sucker off. Drilling it out is hard and painful.

aym
27th April 2012, 07:23 PM
so can it work as a 3 wood? or will the tip be too stiff? the guy in the forum is saying he used it in a hybrid.

Well. THAT was an expensive lesson

Aym I offered to help mate. $20 for me to pull it would have saved you a few bob.

Yeah, not that I didn't want to pay 20 bucks, but saw the video and then came across a heat gun, things clicked, I think the "I can do this" part of me came out.

Any way has anyone got any salvage ideas or should I just pull it and use the shaft as alignment sticks?

If you can still use it tipped and actually want a fighting chance of getting out sing out mate

WTF were you doing using a Nunchuk as a first time experiment, and without a puller to boot?!?!?!?!?!?!?! Dude...........

I did 3 or 4 crap old clubs WITH a puller before going near anything else.

I'm sorry it didn't pan out for you tho, jeez.

If you can still use it tipped and actually want a fighting chance of getting out sing out mate I've spoken to Gary Tozer and he told me confidently you CAN play them tipped. They are not designed to be but he has done it and had no issues. In fact he tipped some and plays them in his Hybrids Get Chappy to salvage it to it and put in a fairway....

aym
27th April 2012, 08:14 PM
Well the thing is it didn't appear to be an experiment ... the guy in the youtube video made it look so easy...

so I am guessing it's the twisting of the shaft that makes the fiber crack? or over heating of the shaft?

virge666

Your aBsolutley fine mate,

Just tip it as little as you can and throw it in a three wood.

No dramas at all

Sounds like a plan mate :) I don't know who Gary Tozer is but thank him for me :)

Chappy, any chance of having a look for me this Sunday :)

Thanks Virge for the input.

Both the comments will make me sleep better tonight lol.

I guess two lessons came out of there, always do a proof of concept and use the right tools, I am a freaking systems engineer how can I not stick to what i preach...

If you heat the shaft, the epoxy that holds the fibres together melt.

Then you twist and the shaft delaminates.

YOU NEVER TWIST A GRAPHITE SHAFT... EVER.

aym

yes very well cared for, I fixed all the zip and fixed the stand, it's awesome now :) but friend gave me his 5 round old callaway stand bag which I might use as a travel bag, when can I buy you that beer I owe you for almost 12 months now? btw if you want to use it as a travel bag I'll drop it off for ya :)

If you use a Nunchuk as a tomato stake will the tomatoes be the best ever?

TourFit
28th April 2012, 01:01 AM
They will be very heavy...

Yossarian
28th April 2012, 01:20 AM
The first time pulling can be awkward, and twisting is not recommended, just a straight pulling motion will do fine to release the tension.

Now you just need the right size drill bit to clean out the hosel. That you CAN twist.

I broke my fairway hybrid shaft yesterday near the head would I be able to drill the remaining shaft out of the head and just glue the shaft back in? Will be a couple of center meters shorter if that matters. What should I use to cut the shaft would a hacksaw work?

You're probably looking at having lost 1 1/4 inches? You'd be looking at a massive 7.5 or so swingweight points, not to mention probably no less than a full flex stiffer. You could try, but i'd be staking tomatoes. You're only real chance would be playing it in a shorter hybrid loft imo.

went to see chappy today, managed to get the shaft out, cut about 2 inches from the tip and got it in to my 3 wood, will see how it go. Thanks for the help btw.

Will be interested to try it at the range tomorrow night..

It is a regular shaft wouldn't mind it a bit stiffer how do I correct the sw difference?

You either use a tip weight, hot melt or lead tape. Given the crazy amount of lead you'd need a tip weight would be the wtg. I used to have them in 9 grams which makes up for 4.5 points no worries, which could be enough.

If you're real keen to save it i'd simply extend (butt extension) to what length i'd lost. This would be the go, you might get away with the extra stiffness if it's reg and you want more.

oncewasagolfer
29th April 2012, 12:45 PM
So if I extend it I don't have to worry about adding weight? What do I use to extend it do I have to buy something?

virge666

Correct.

An old shaft or a shaft extender.

Ok thanks guys I will give it a go.

TheNuclearOne

Ok thanks guys I will give it a go.

After you extend don't worry about swingweighting as it will be skewed from the extension weight. Nothing to worry about.

Just reporting back, the chuck in a 3 wood with 2 inch off the tip work well in the end, went to Yarra bend tonight and was hitting about 200~ with small fade (same as the driver with chuck) and at 42 inch I think it was a lot controllable too.

So thanks heaps chappy for doing the work and Virge for the advice.
