Saw a bit of old footage today from the 1966 PGA. Sam Snead had to take a drop after hitting into the water. He took his ball, lifted it up and over his right shoulder and dropped it behind him. Then he walked around it and took his shot. Has the method for dropping your ball changed or did he just have the shits? It looked like a strange way of doing it.

Pretty sure that's the way it used to be done, I've seen the same thing a few times in old footage.

I reckon that the method of dropping the ball changed in the mid 80's but I will admit that was during the dark years for me.

Sort of makes sense in a way, stops you trying to pick out the best bit of grass to try and drop on.

I can remember that from when I was a kid playing. Face the hole and drop it over your shoulder.

It changed in 1983-4. I remember, as I had just joined a club and started playing. There was a major rules revision then, targetting R&A and USGA rules discrepancies for the first time.

Also outlawed the traditional 1.62 inch diameter ball, in favour of the bigger 1.68 inch American ball. And I think the use of 'three-quarter handicap' for 4BBB went also.

But it wasted time, with balls often hitting the legs or rolling onto the back of their shoes, and needing to be re-dropped.

Personally I prefer the "Naga" style of ball dropping...

I know but I am sure he wishes we still played 1/2, 3/4 & 7/8 for matchplay, stableford and par.
