Google have bought them for the patents. Common sort of reason for acquisitions these days.

True, they may not want to compete with those that licence their OS. Would be interesting to see what Motorola's point of difference will be.

Apple MACs used to be powered by Motorola back in the 80s and 90s. The 68000 and PowerMac if my memory sees me.

I so know motorola have been looking fairly seriously at different types of networks. mobile phones etc Are only a very small part of what they do.

Motorola were at one stage involved in the make up of land mines. Their business is quite diversified.

Why wouldn't Google go up against their own licencees? They have no real other OS options. Google Nexus anyone?

Killing the Golden Goose. Licencing is their cash cow and shifts development R&D away

Windows Mobile is a distant 3rd. There is Symbian and Nokia etc. The primary competitors are Apple/ITunes and Android/Market.

Nokia has signed up with Windows for their smartphones. If you haven't tried WP7, it is an amazing mobile OS and has become the basis for how Windows 8 will look and feel from PC to Tab to Phone.
