2012 Vic Ozgolf Matchplay
Detail
Annual Ozgolf Matchplay event for the Mexicans. After closing date for interest, Bruce and myself will draw 1st round matches out of the hat. Matches will then be posted here. Round 1 will have a cut off date of. (more than likely end of May, due to the lateness of the draw). Round 2 will consist of all round 1 match winners (if odd number of entries some players may get auto entry to second round i.e. last years winner. Round 2 will have a cut off date of (more than likely end of June). Round 3 will consist of all round 2 match winners (if odd number of entries lucky losers get auto entry to third round) Round 3 will have a cut off date of (more than likely end of September). All subsequent rounds will be determined after final numbers have been confirmed. Format is handicapped matchplay i.e. one player has a handicap of 18 and the opponent has a handicap of 15 then the 18 h'caper will get a shot on the 3 hardest holes. It is advisable to organise golf days in an attempt to get multiple matches completed on the one day, also those new Ozgolf members can get to know other Victorian golfers, (all Interstate Ozgolfers are most welcome to play in these days if they are in town)It is the reponsibility of both players of a match to coordinate the playing of said match. Those players that do not have an official handicap are welcome to play, a handicap must be nominated by them prior to teh match in line with their ability. If a hustler is found within the ranks, I reserve the right to do something REALLY REALLY REALLY humiliating to them.

All Victorian Ozgolfers, who nominate for the annual Matchplay event do so with the understanding that they commit to jointly organise and complete a match with the drawn opponent within the allocated timeframe. If you believe that your commitments, outside of Ozgolf, will not allow the required opportunity to play the match please do not nominate in the first place. If a competitor can show evidence where they have attempted to organise a match, on mulitple occasions, at a perceived convenient time with their opponent without success, the match committee reserves the right to award the match (by walkover) to the competitor that has attempted to organise the match. This is an attempt to get this thing run and won annually. Anything not clear let me know.

ParkRoyal we have had competitors previously that participated who had no official handicap. All we ask is that the HCP you nominate is fair and balanced, else if you win your match your HCP for the next round will differ greatly from that of the first match.

Anyone interested in travelling 4-6 hours round trip to play their match???

Would love to enter this but don't get to the big smoke nearly often enough to make regular matches.

Lefty,
Jack has recently moved to Warnambool, if you are both keen I don't see any reason why you can't be paired with each other in round 1

Suppose it couldn't hurt depending on whether he wants to enter this or not. Will hopefully be able to catch up with him for a game at his current (and my ex) home track in the next month or two so if that can be arranged and Jack has no objections we can go from there.
Cheers Chappy!

16 players would be ideal, where is Mint's name? Is the reigning champion still in the new Grandma afterglow and too busy to nominate? What about some other Vic Ozgolfers?

If you are new to the forum or have been just sitting on the periphery for a little while, sign up. These matchplay days are a lot of fun and don't be too concerned about your lack of HCP or ability. It all evens out in the end.

When do most of these days happen predominantly???
Saturday or Sunday?

I think regardless of what happens with Jack I'll probably nominate for this. Would be a good excuse to take the better half down to Melbourne for what would be 4 times max for the year (and for that to happen I'd have to make the final, fat chance of that happening) and show her a good time. Still a pencil at this stage, but get the inkpot ready for me to dip the quill.

Can we try to make the first round a day that all the games are played - like we did at Rosebud Park last year. It was so good to meet everyone. BGH - just be nice to her. I don't think anybody's tried that tactic yet. :) If you stay away from the skirt jokes she'll be lacking motivation.

Andi, I look forward to a repeat of our 18th hole choke-fest from a couple of years back, but with a different result this time. Seeing as we're both Richmond supporters, I think it's only fair that the loser should be awarded ninth place?

Sounds like our first round venue is sewn up, but I'd happily offer Queenscliff on a Sunday (or Saturday, for that matter) as a venue for a round two game and see how many we can get down here. I'll obviously be playing. Might also be a way to make the travel slightly easier for the winner out of Lefty and Jack.

Just throwing it out there.

I'm sure you know this already but just remember not to watch the swing. You'll spend more time wondering how he does it than concentrating on your own game.

If that is the case, perhaps we could play as a foursome. I haven't had any luck getting Flower Girl to respond my PM though.

Johhny Boy is my other half and we are into foursomes!!! ( sorry for that comment but it is expected of me) We live down on the Mornington Peninsula but are happy to travel up for a match. Pretty free most Sundays. If BGH and Rodders want to come up with a venue and a date we will try our best.

Lovely course, great company, oh, and he kicked my ass 3&2.

9th April 2012, 07:07 PM
Well Larry did turn up at Kingston Heath for our match today. :) He got off to a good start winning the first hole with a bogey to my double and I promptly got it back to square with a par to Larry's concession after his approach shot which pulled up a couple of metres short of the green was somehow putted into the bunker. :) This was the continuing story of my front nine as I had 18 points playing off 18 by getting 4 pars, 4 doubles and 1 bogey. This was enough to get me to 2 up at the turn and I ground it out on the back 9 amassing another 18 points and winning the match with a bogey to Larrys double on the 16th green 3 & 2. It was a windy day and Larry's high ball flight (and not playing golf for 2 months) hurt him with marginal balls being blown waaaay off target several times. I was solid without being spectacular and that was enough on the day. Thanks to Firey for hosting and mint & LarryLong for the company a very enjoyable day except for whoever it was that pushed my buggy into the bunker on 18 while I was marking my ball, not cool whoever it was. :)

LarryLong
9th April 2012, 09:26 PM
Thanks guys, that was an enjoyable day at a great course. I'll be launching an inquiry into how that bunker somehow moved itself directly into the path of my putt just after I had finished lining it up.

Andi was boringly, boringly solid, and this was far too good for my wildly inconsistent game. With two losses in three years, I'm now officially Andi's matchplay bunny.

I was a little disappointed with my game, but the sight of Andi sifting through the sand for his ball markers after his buggy rolled into a bunker cheered me up. Firey may have some pictorial evidence of the day's big highlight.

mint
10th April 2012, 08:25 AM
Thanks Firey for hosting us today! The golf wasn't great by any means but its always great to have a round with you guys ! Larry I think its karma that you kept loosing those yellow balls mate.. a man just is not supposed to use them! haha
Highlights of the day for me have to be the rum .. gee whiz thats nice! There was nothing spectacular that happened on course.. and in fireys words.. "mint you won cause you were the least sh*t!" which is about the most accurate comment of the day! Pleasure guys would happily have another round with you any time!

Firey
10th April 2012, 02:14 PM
Thanks for the game guys - Always happy to host (although I would like to win one occasionally).

:)

I would like to take this opportunity to say that it was a classic clash in a monumental see-sawing battle raging across the day.

Having said that, the reality is that Mint was pretty accurate in his assessment that the least shit golfer won on the day. The longer the day went, the worse I got whilst Mint maintained a general level of crappiness throughout and hung on for the win. He should be primed for Round 2.

For the record, the rum in the hip flask was "Ron Zacapa Sistema Solera 23". A classical savory Guatemalan rum.

As for Andi, well....

The ladies celebrate winning the Nabisco by jumping into the lake next to the 18th green. Not to be outdone, Andi celebrated his win over Larry by losing control of his remote buggy beside the 18th and.......

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i209/Fyirippu/Bunker3.jpg

It's a pity that the photo doesn't show the wheels spinning forlornly waiting for Andi to notice.

FlowerGirl and I have our match all booked in for Anzac day, 10:48 tee off at St Andrews Beach on the Mornington Peninsula. I have a non-ozgolf mate playing as well (in hind-sight the worse decision of my life given how much shit I will be copping off him throughout the round) so we still have one spare spot in the group if anyone is keen to play.

Simply go to the St Andrews Beach website and book online at 10:48 if you are keen and we will see you there.

Blustery conditions at St Andrews Beach today but hardly any rain. I think the conditions suited me better than Brad. Also the difference between the blue tees and the reds were in my favour - just a lot!! I was four up at the turn due to making fewer mistakes and a bit of luck. The 140 meter head start on the 13th was too much for Brad and it was game, set and match to the skirt. 6/5
Thanks Brad for a great game played in true Ozgolf spirit. The first time he has played in an Ozgolf game and hopefully not the last.
Lovely to have Kev with us - he played some great shots - great upside down back to from left handed chip was pretty awesome!! And nice to meet Brad's mate Marcus.

Kev and I commented that we really have to have a Vic Ozgolf day with as many of us there that can make it. I'm happy to organise it but I only know the courses down the peninsula way. Does anyone know a course that is pretty central that we all can get on ok - or are you guys happy to travel? You have no idea how true this is. I never even looked like being in the game. FG had my measure on hole one and never game me a sniff.

In hind-sight, the course/conditions couldn't have been worse for me. My game is bad enough on a still, sunny day. Playing a difficult links course that I had no clue about in a gale was a recipe for disaster. Playing from the back pegs in that wind, most of the time I was just happy for my tee shot to make it to the ladies markers (which sometimes it didn't).

Oh btw FG + Kev. Sorry for bailing early, that was quite rude of us. But our other-half's were killing time after their day spa treatments and sending pushy SMSs because they wanted to come pick us up so that we could head to the wineries.... Plus I needed a couple of bottles of red to drown my sorrows.

I love that course though, simply stunning. Will get back there ASAP to play another round and see what the final five holes are like :)

No problems at all.

I almost let you win after you were so sweet to me.
Me - "Ive been married 36 years"
You - " Boy you must have been young when you got married" :)

Nearly threw the game there and then - but not quite!!!

For the record I played the last five holes pretty good - just missed the birdie on the 18th. :)

What is the draw for the second round ? - does the winner of match 1 (Lefty v Jack) play the winner of match 2 ie Flowerbandit?

chappy1970
8th May 2012, 11:59 AM
Jack has your match been played yet? If so, who won and what was the score?
The rd 1 matches haven't been completed yet, including mine. The cut off is approaching though. After round 1 matches are all done, Bruce and I have historically drawn the matches for rd 2, so you for example wouldn't necessarily play FG in Rd 2. We do this to keep an element of the unknown in the event.

As there seem to be still a few rd 1 matches to be completed, I would like to implement a rule for next years comp. It will read as follows.

I have tried repeatedly to contact Rodders re his first round match against Johnny Boy. How long does he get before this is a walkover or is there someone else who missed out who would like to fill in.
What;s the ruling here Chappy?? :)

What is the draw for the second round ? - does the winner of match 1 (Lefty v Jack) play the winner of match 2 ie Flowerbandit?

Are you chicken McFly???? :)

I forgot to post the result of my match with Lefty from last week. Lefty was a comfortable 2/1 winner after leading most of the way. Well done Lefty and good luck in the next round, especially if you draw the old woman (do not under any circumstances play her at St Andrews Beach!!)

Both played some great golf (IMHO at least) and both holed some great pressure putts down the stretch.

ParkRoyal (Steve) won our match today 5 & 3.

It was not close all day, Steve was extremely solid off the tee all day and was under little to no pressure for the whole round.

I had a very poor day off the tee and carried a cold putter all day. Taking nothing away from Steve, he was far too good for me.

Thanks to Chappy and Andi for a very enjoyable round around a super course. I think i rode my luck a few times, but struck the ball ok. Andi was incredibly stiff on not having a few putts drop.

Shot of the day though must go to Andy on the 11th though, using every bit of his course knowledge to knock is iron to 2 meters and an easy birdie.

Again thanks for hosting Andy.

I wondered if that shot would get a mention :)

I hit a good drive to 120 out, took an 8 iron to make sure I flew the greenside bunkers and to get to a back pin. The ball never got off the deck, I hit it so thin that it rolled 80 metres to the bunker, went straight through and bounced up onto the green where it nestled happily 6 foot from the pin. As I told the boys you only write down the score :)

Excellent day out, learned some new swears from Chappy and met a good bloke (Tigers man :) ) in Steve. We'll have to saddle up again.

So only Bruce v Kev and Johnny Boy v Rodders to go in the first round.

Well, I've drifted from 1.5 to 3.2 in the last six or so months so my golf ain't exactly sparkling at the moment either! ;-)

A massive thanks to Andi for hosting us again! Always a pleasure to play spring valley and with great rum and great company! you wouldnt of even noticed the round went for 7 hours!! haha

Lefty you played great mate! you didn't make too many mistakes all day and I was behind the 8 ball from the start!! well played :) awesome to play with you again!
(3&2 victory for Lefty)

Highlights of the day for me:
Fireys 3 wood out of the bunker from 210 and puts it to 6 feet!
Leftys billion foot putt on the first and tiger like flop that went straight in!! KILLED ME !!
Andi's distinct lack of interest after the 8th hole

Thanks again guys and cant wait to the next time!

Excellent rum, excellent company, excellent course, terrible golf :( I couldn't buy a chip or a putt all day and after I went 6 down through 8 holes I lost a little interest in the outcome. Glad it wasn't a second round match for me, though the word is I would have toppled the skirt as she played even worse than I did. :)
