We're heading up to Cairns for a wedding in August - anybody got some good suggestions for somewhere to stay? The wedding is at the Hilton, so strolling distance to there is a must. Need a couple of rooms, a proper bath and Wifey is partial to a big, impressive pool. Not too noisy, if this is possible in the non-stop party metropolis that is Cairns.

Already negotiated to bring the sticks up for a hit of golf, should be able to stretch that out to a couple of hits by the time we leave. Will start a thread for the golf once I know some dates.

Plenty of good places to stay on the Esplanade. Not a great deal of traffic noise, you'll probably have the doors shut and the air con running anyhow.

I've only stayed at the Holiday Inn (http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/us/en/cairns/caias/hoteldetail). That was pretty good. The Cairns locals should be more help than me.

Obviously there's the Hilton itself. Next closest would be the Pullman (Casino), followed by the Shangri-La and the Sebel. Harbour Lights is literally across the road from the Hilton, but it's holiday apartments as opposed to a Hotel.

Hotel Solarman.....................with Wilson

Cheers guys, will check them out.

Holiday apartments would be OK. Subject to price, of course, which is why we're not just booking into the Hilton. A house would be great, but there doesn't seem to be anything like that close by. We usually try to rent a house for a week when we stay in other towns, but Cairns might be a bit too touristy for that idea. The pool thing could also be an issue.

Dunno if I could handle Wilson's lifestyle. He knows how to party.

The middle level of my joint is a self contained 2 bedroom apartment but I would want to see photos of your miss's in a bikini before letting you have it. :)

Mantra esplanade is apartments. Not to be confused with mantra trilogy which is further down the esplanade, slightly cheaper but not as good.
The former is closer to the hilton.

The Hilton is right in the CBD (http://g.co/maps/pjr5e) so there are no houses nearby.

I'll have to bump this thread in May in prep for my planned June visit, except I'll be asking from the tightarse perspective.

I'll be up in April, and should be staying at Mantra Esplanade (I think that's our corporate joint...)

It's all overpriced and poor quality. Hiltons just undergone room refurbs so I'd probably just pick there.

The Sebel Habourlights is very good, directly opposite the Hilton.

You'll be wanting backpacker style accomodation then?

My vote is for The Sebel (formerly Cairns Intrnational). It's right across the road from the casino and it's fantastic! Got a room on wotif.com for $120 earlier in the year and it was the best room I've ever stayed in for that money. Have a look!

If you stay there, keep clear of the awnings and above the Bars and Restaurants and the benches in the rooms and bathrooms..............

I'd be happy to send the photos, but the last bit worries me.

The Courthouse?

I don't think I'd meet the strict dress code.

I'm not above the tightarse perspective, but it does seem that I'm looking in the wrong part of town.

I'll keep that in mind. I'm also going to have a 'no leaning on windows' policy for the entire stay.

Thanks for the suggestions, will do some research and run them by management.

Also there's some quite large glass skylights there as well. Don't stand under them.

When in Cairns for work we have always used Il Centro on Sheridan Street.

Getting a little bit old now but the apartments are still in pretty good shape. They are semi self contained.

Walking distance to evertything in the CBD.

Can I recommend PJ O'Briens in the mall for a feed.

$12 if I remember rightly for a feed and a beer. Great talent behind the bar as well.

Noted.

The self contained joint might be an option to throw a slab into a fridge that has room and invite the lads around. Given them all a plan to work on...kind of like "celebrity apprentice".
Solarman...you're fired.

The Courthouse Hotel does $10 dinners with a different meal each night of the week.

Need 3 nites this week.
Would like one of the self contained places as there is normally a bit more room for when I work on the pkans at night (seriously).

Is the pullman level 2 of Solarman's house?

FWIW we ended up staying at Jack and Newell apartments and they were very good. Wifey must have got a kickarse special deal though because the currently published rates aren't in our usual price range.

As if you would know. You only go to places that take your coupons. :)
