I know how much we all love to share our Golf Pornography so, thought I would start a thread to share guitar pornography..

I have just bought myself a 2009 Gibson Les Paul Traditional in Desert Burst (just waiting on delivery) - no name yet but, thinkin about Julia (as in Zemiro NOT Gillard)

Also have a Schecter Omen 6 Extreme in Wine Red - no name yet but, my wife indicated that if I call it by a girls name and it's not hers there will be trouble....

And a Traveler Lite Nylon Acoustic (world's ugliest guitar) which I am seriously considering calling Buggles (Butt Ugly)

I have had 12 les Pauls and only ever kept one, a beat up dark green studio, just something about it. It has very strong mids that punch through every decent amp I have had. I am culling back these days and just sold my PRS DGT (Dave Grissom) and PRS Mira along with my Pete Renolds JFR25 amp... sensational hand made ozzy amp! My setup now is an Egnator Renegade head into a Laney 2x12 with 2 Celestion Golds in it. For guitars I only now have my trusty green LP studio, JV Strat and Maton Michael Fix signature EBG acoustic.

Best pics I could find of each of them (pics 1 to 4 will give people migraines - for that, a thousand apologies)...from first to last:

1. 1985 Fender Stratocaster 1954 Reissue (made in Japan, E series). Looks beautiful, sounds beautiful, has no name.
2. 2003 Epiphone Les Paul Standard. I love the colours of the sunburst on the top of this one. I would like to upgrade the pickups on it one day. No name.
3. 2001 Cort MR730-FX. Bought this off the guitarist from Waikiki (Sydney band from the mid 90s-early 00s) back in about 2005. Solid sitka spruce top, solid mahogany back, mahogany back and sides. Plays and sounds better than a lot of Matons and Martins I've played. No name.
4. 2000 Cort Earth 100F. 18th birthday present. Solid spruce top, maple back and sides, currently strung in an alternate tuning. Lovely tone for what was a $500 or so guitar. No name.
5. 2007 Cort Earth 200F-12. Birthday present from a few years ago. Same specs as the MR730-FX. No name.
6. Epiphone Chet Atkins SST. Sold it a couple of years ago, but I liked it a lot. Acoustic guitar with a solid body - the tone wasn't anywhere near as authentic as a proper acoustic but I got some use out of it. No name.

I also have a Jap Strat which I want to do up one day, thinking Lace Sensor pickups or something like a stacked humbucker.

Sorry, not a guitarist. My mate has plenty. Cymbals are my thing. I have a few newer ones, 12" Paste splash and a 16" paste signature china, and some cheap thing I bought off the net, a 16" Dream crash which goes alright. But my babies are my old ones.

These all Paste, a cracked set of 14" Stambul '65 high hats I use as 14" crashes, depending on the other cymbals I'm using I take one or the other. An 18" formula 602 black label late issue (probably early 80's) crash/ride. A '69 Stambul '65 20" ride and then my beloved very rare '69 formula 602 15" sound edge (called scalloped edge back then) high hats. There's an old story from drumming mag I read years ago that Chad Wackerman (think he used to play with Zappa) has a set of these high hats and doesn't let anyone else touch them. Not even someone like vinnie colauita.

The unknown is the 18" A Zildjian crash my dad bought second hand in '69. No idea how old it is but when he bought it it already had a decent keyhole worn into it. It's a thing of beauty, and the only zildjian cymbal I've heard that I liked.

All these with the exception of the crack 14" high hats (I bought them that way) are pretty much in mint condition and would look better than most new ones hanging in a store.

150781. Ibanez V300 acoustic. Circa '82. Got it for my 21st (it was 2nd hand then). That was a while ago:roll:. A bit banged about and has a badly worn fret board, but still plays and sounds great! Nickname: Eddie - can't remember why, just always been Eddie.
150792. Kiso Suzuki WT200/12. Circa dunno. Got it for my 30th. Nothing special, but like most 12 strings, sounds big. Nickname: TS185 - named after another nothing special Suzuki
150803. Ibanez AF105 Artcore. Bought her about 3-4 years ago. Always wanted a Gretsch...played one about the same price as the Ibanez and it didn't even come close to this! Nickname: Beth (as in Ditto) - thick in the body, but sounds great!
150774. Plumb circa '93. Bought on a whim. Sounds great in full flight, great action. Nickname: Wood****er

Hey ID,

I checked one of these out (couldn't find under Legacy brand, only the Epiphone version), very nice but, somewhat out of my current price range and I suspect a little too loud for my needs at present. I have been checking out a number of valve amps in the 1 - 5watt range for use in my home as I am in no way up to playing a gig; I'm hopeful in another 12 months of being able to head up to the tablelands for their monthly jam fest but, will see how that goes.

I have just about worn my fingers to the bone, reading reviews, looking at Youtube clips and researching prices; looked at an epiphone valve junior head on ebay, Vox lil nightrain head and cab, the bugera range and on and on... bottom line was, wife was never gonna let me spend more than $400 and even then, she would possibly (likely) say no.

I checked out a Vox AC4TV all valve combo unit the other day; sweet unit with switchable power levels and basic volume and tone controls. 10" Celestion speaker unit and sounded great. I have just found a store in Newcastle with them on sale for $299 (RRP is $399) and am going into Billy Hyde tomorrow to see if they will price match. I also have a Boss OD3 pedal coming courtesy of Ebay ($70 vice $139 RRP) which will handle overdrive duties for my darker metal tendencies. This amplifier has sweet tones right out of the box and I suspect (know) my LP will sound even better through this than through the SS Marshall

Hopeful that Billy Hydes will match coz wife said I could but, only if they price match so, fingers crossed. Anyways, here is a link from the same website you used to show me the Epiphone..http://www.guitar.com.au/amplifiers/electric/vox/ac4/ac4.htm interestingly, they seem to feel that they should charge $499 for the same amp??

Good looking specs on that Vox. The OD were a great pedal. I don't think you can find them anymore, but the Ibanez Tube Screamer was the benchmark in the 80s with the OD very close. It you like experimenting, the Vamp2 by Behringer was a great option for amp modeling and effects. The Pod was good but much more expensive.

Picked up the Vox AC4TV today from Billy Hydes in Cairns; they rang the store that I had the advertisement from and matched the price with freight so, a little more than the $299 but, not too much ($333 was the price) still way better than the $399 sticker price. Had a play this afternoon, man it sounds awesome, dial the power down a little, crank the volume knob and hear the sweet sweet sound of distorted pure valve sound; and for 4 watts this thing is waaaay louder than my 30 Marshall SS and the distortion sounds nice and sweet rather than harsh at the upper volumes.

I can see my wife yelling for us to turn it down if and when we crank it at the 4W setting... Just waiting on the overdrive pedal to arrive in the mail now...

Class A design has so much more headroom. Just goes to show that there isn't much difference between 5 watts and 50 watts.

When you gig, just mike up the amp. In the days of a having a full-time roadie, my amps were racked and put through a powersoak to get the amp working hard and sounding good.

I use to use a Mesa SOB (50W) with one 12" on bigger gigs and used to kill the Marshall 100 quad box combos. On the smaller gigs in taverns etc, I had a Mesa Studio Calibre (22W). That was monster too.

These days, unless you're a tour pro, I'd go the Amp modelling route. Just set up your presets with compression to be able use you guitar volume to control sustain and crunch.

Sounds like you're in for a lot of fun. Wish I was still interested.

There should be an addition to the axe arsenal this weekend.

I came across an Epi LP Custom last weekend that I'm trying out and will most likely buy on Saturday. White, nice nick for $250...will be able to put some nice pups in it and turn it into an aural monster.

She barely tolerates the Tiny Terror on 7.5W setting & plenty of distortion... I wait for her to leave & then flick it to 15W to upset the neighbours :-)

My mates favourite bass dropped out of it's stand at a gig a few weeks ago and got a few dings etc. Found a guy in brissie to fix it, ended up having him straighten the neck, replace all the frets with stainless, reseat pickups, fix the timber that was damaged, sanded and reshaped the neck, new strings, god knows what else, but 1700 later all fixed!

I can't remember his name, but wasn't it that big name guitarist that featured in the movie crossroads that was endorsed by Ibanez and had a signature 7 string?

Edit: Steve Vai is who I'm thinking of.

Some Jazz soloists have been using the 7 string for years when accompanying themselves and singers etc. Modern day guitarists probably would use except for effect.

Correct. Quite a lot of fun if you're into heavier stuff. I'm a big fan of nevermore and fear factory and petrucci uses them in some dream theater stuff too.

My collection of Gibson's is expanding. I picked up my Rudolf Schenker Flying V yesterday after wanting a V for a little while now. The Schenker one appealed as it is modeled after the 70's version with a different headstock and a few other things.

Noice.... I use my Tiny Terror on 7watt setting most of the time especially when wife is at home... when she is not here I might switch it to 15 Watts & crank it... Then I get paranoid that the neighbours might tell her :smt087

It's amazing how loud everything is these days. I remember not looking at anything under 50W back in the day.

Was packing my guitars away as I haven't touched them for over 6 years. I sold my '87 PRS made by the man himself to pay-off some outstanding school fees about 4 years ago and probably lost interest then.

Looked on Gumtree last Sunday week to sell some gear - ended up applying for an audition. Surprisingly, I succeeded - had to learn about 10 new songs (current hits - for me anyway) and get my skills up in less than a week. The band has its first gig sometime early Jan.

Good excuse to buy some gear. I went to Kosmic and caught up with the owner - he still remembered me by name from 25 years ago. He got me a good deal on the Marshall and a rack case.

If the gigging goes well, I may look at a new PRS in a few months - my old one is too expensive to buy back unfortunately.

The JVM410C Combo is brilliant. I will have to spend sometime working out how to rig my effects to it.

Kit I currently have:
Amps:
Behringer Vampire 210
Legacy Blues Custom

Effects:
Digitech GNX3000
Peavey TubeFex
Behringer V-AMP Pro
Zoom 9010

Guitars include:
Fender Strat Plus
Yamaha SG2000S
Gibson 135
Custom-built US Aria
Ovation Custom Legend
Yamaha APX

... Thinking about a Variax 600 series. Almost tempted to go out and pick up a Marshall half-stack to go with it.

I think my inner Golf HO is now a Guitar Ho. Unfortunately, the Guitar addiction is much more expensive!

Got my first gig on Saturday, 4th. Should be interesting. Out of 35 songs - only knew of 7 of them when I joined the band.
Hardest task will be to remember the start of each one.

At least I get to play my gear - PA and operator is supplied so the Amp should be kicking!

Gents, if you're looking for a guitar amp that realistically models the famous tube amps at living room volumes - this is it! Concept have them for $349. Probably will get it cheaper - $320.

Tried the Yamaha THR 10 the other day. Going to get one next week. Needed some audio speakers in my office. It is brilliant.

The Les Paul I mentioned a while back, plus a Cort Earth 200F/12 that I've had for about 3 years now but never upped a photo of.

Les Paul has a little bit of buzzing, and I haven't had time to get it looked at and ask for recommendations for new humbuckers.

I've been bequeathed a decent amount of money from my grandmother, and as per her instruction looking to buy something that I can keep forever as a reminder of her.

She was very supportive of my musical gift so I've decided to spend it on a new acoustic guitar.

Been listening to YouTube reviews and recordings of various options and am considering a Taylor grand auditorium of some sort...414ce or 614ce.

Parramatta Guitar Factory apparently have 50 different Taylors in stock so I'm on a train to go play them and figure out which one will do the job for me.

Then I'll get some sort of inscription on the headstock that will serve as the reminder of her.

Either of these 2...Taylor 414ce or 416ce, both 2014 Spring Limited Edition.

Basically these are gonna be a lot less pricey than the next batch of Taylors that come into the country, which are 15% more because of the falling dollar.

Ticket price for both is $3400 each, but I'm looking at around $2750.

Really stupid question but what's the difference between the two?

KristianJ
14th January 2015, 10:12 PM
Not that stupid a question, really.

The first one (414ce) has a slightly narrower body than the second one (416ce).

A larger guitar body has a deeper tone than a smaller body, so those who finger pick more than strum would find more usefulness in a smaller body.

At first I couldn't tell the difference, but I ended up spending over an hour playing them and switching between the two, and it did come to me.

Like I tell the Mrs.... A man cannot have enough guitars

KristianJ
16th January 2015, 09:05 PM
I ended up choosing the 414ce. $2749 worth of spruce, ovangkol and ebony...

To indicate how much of a bargain it is, Allans Billy Hyde (who've taken over as the Australian distributor for Taylor) added the range to their website over the past couple of days and you ain't gonna get much change from 4 grand for a standard, let alone one of these seasonal limited editions.

As a consequence of me buying a guitar that cost me as much as the same as my other 4 combined, I'm probably going to look into insurance. :)

16th January 2015, 09:26 PM

For insurance I suggest Marsh but Aon also can cover guitars.

RACV or whatever its called in your state also do portable cover; I use this for my drums knowing that I am covered up to 5k (although my kit is worth much more than that!) but the cost saving is substantial compared to Marsh.

Brief back story...I realised not long after buying the Les Paul on the previous page that it was a pretty lame knock off. I sold it for next to nothing late last year and today finally replaced it with a legit Epiphone Les Paul Custom.

Feels, looks and sounds a heap better than the fake one.

A couple of additional guitars this year...

Left is a mid 2000s Korean Epiphone Les Paul 1956 Gold Top (with custom wiring, switches, etc) and right is a 2010 Epiphone Les Paul 1960 Tribute (with Gibson pickups, wiring and other stuff). The 1960 Tribute is an absolute beast!

Been keeping an eye on this for a while. Surprising such an iconic company could get their acquisitions so wrong.

a lot of the issue sadly lies out of their hands, rock music is dying and the dreams of 'making it' for a local band are no longer a reality

and hence no longer will a muso fork out their hand earned for a guitar in excess of 2k
