View Full Version : Musical geniuses

Who fits this category?

For me, three that automatically spring to mind are Mark Knopfler, Freddie Mercury and Chris Martin.
Knopfler WAS Dire Straits. Best guitarist that ever lived. Pretty sure he wrote everything DS did. Plus the soundtracks to Local Hero, Cal and Princess Bride. The album "Love Over Gold" is absolute musical perfection.
Freddie Mercury as a singer and performer was astonishing. We won't ever see his equal.
Chris Martin (ok I'm a big fan of Coldplay) was even mentioned as a 'melodic genius' by Bono. 99% of his songs have that hook that makes them so listenable. Still not really fussed about MX yet.

Could also add a 4th. Paul Kelly. Yep that's 4.

John Lennon & Paul McCartney.
Elton John & Bernie Taupin.
Queen, as a band, were all fantastic songwriters/performers.

Depends on you criteria and definition for the term genius. Does it include innovator as well?

AlexMc
26th December 2011, 01:33 PM
Lennon/McCartney and Cobain changed music for their respective generations. People like Nick Cave, Neil Finn and Thom Yorke have managed to churn out brilliant songs over a very long period. Good pick with Cave Yoss - it blows my mind that a song like 'The Ship Song' was made 20 years ago.

ill ponder this a while and come up with some more

after all that pondering(the last five mins) i came up with
Sufjan Stevens-ability to create so many great songs in so many different styles of music
Al Green -although the Rev is mainly a crooner but still weaves magic with his voice
David Byrne- added a bunch of his stuff again lately, a real craftsmen of sound

Yeah. I'm a glass half full guy; didn't worry me in the slightest that Chinese Democracy took so long, I was just happy it came out at all. Apparently in the studio recording another GNR album - 2022 should be a good year :)

Has been, although I've only caught a couple. The grunge episode was bizarre, spent the whole time posing the question if grunge was actually metal, and the general consensus was that it wasn't... I read a quote about Alice in Chains once along these lines that was very true "AIC were too grunge for the metal crowd and too metal for the grunge crowd, but that just served to double their popularity"

PT and SC (plus Opeth's Heritage which he produced) are all I've really heard of his, and I've only heard a few PT albums as it is. Definitely impressed by what I have heard though.

I probably haven't given SC a fair run yet tbh. I think I only gave it 3 full listens and dropped it out of rotation. Will have to give it another crack this week - expect to see me posting about how great it is soon.. :)
