This is one for all those out there in working land.

What do you do for a crust and how much do you hate it?

Is it the 6am starts, the traffic or commute, maybe the boss or co workers who your forced to associate with, the office politics, the product you are supposed to believe in and promote/sell, being nice to customers who you'd rather bash their heads in with a brick.

Why do you hate your job??

I haven't been to work for 3 years and I have never been happier I don't think I could ever go back to work, ever.

PS in this day and age of political correctness BS, best not to answer this on your work PC, because you never know when the office troll spies over your shoulder and tells the boss who checks what you wrote then uses it against you to sack or demote you. Ah yes the workplace what a totally fkd up concept of mind numbing proportion, work what a head fk.

On that note I am off to the range got an appointment with 100 balls see how my back holds up today.

I'm in a new job (4 months) so remain in the honeymoon period, so I quite like it. That was after not working for 4 months too!

I'm a director at a small private property developer

You are:

unemployed?
retired?
self employed?
studying?
living off the proceeds of crime?
living off the proceeds of another? (eg. sugar mummy)

Furniture upholsterer, h ate it, but partially because of our circumstances which hopefully will change next year. So stressed and pressured I've only had one full day off work since the champs. And with the usual xmas rush working many nights too. Already booking work for April next year and don't even want to answer the phone these days, hearing it ring drives me nuts. If Rob could work things would be different but that's never gonna happen any more. My suggestion, don't set yourself up based on having someones income (especially the more regular stable one) only to lose it almost straight after. It's not good for the hair line.

Actually, I'm a great upholsterer and enjoy it, thing a business sux!

dude, you obviously need to increase your prices.

If you're so f#cking busy and in demand, you should be rolling in moolah

I have two jobs and really enjoy them both. Lucky enough that my day job is a really good place to work.
was stuck long enough in a job i hated to make sure i don't have that happen again. The only advantage to the job i hated was sickies every week/fortnight for golf. I do miss that.

Was about to say exactly that.

Technically I'd agree with you all. But this trade doesn't seem to work that way any more. Apart from one 'chain' upholstery firm up here we are all pretty much the same now, small pretty much one may show operations. And I've found out recently that I am at the top end of the market price wise, and have been for years now. The only quiet time I've had was a period before last xmas when I tried upping my prices and soon found that there is a very fine line to what people are willing to and not to spend.

And in many cases I'm not competing with just the other upholsterers, but also with the likes of Amart and Fantastic, HN etc etc. To the point where in the last year I've only upholstered one chair that was within 20 years old, when 10 years ago we did many. It's hard to explain (and I don't bother) to customers that the fabric they want for their lounge is dearer that the entire replacement lounge they're considering, let alone with my labour added in. I'm not like a plumber, electrician or mechanic where in most cases everyone will need them and they are only competing with others of the same trade. I'm competing against some place in china which is shipping lounge suits into brisbane for $250 a full finished suite.

I also do a lot of work for the local decorators and many are now asking me to bill the customers directly rather than through them. They are finding that if they put some margin on top of my price (like they used to) they don't get the jobs. I've learned that I'm right at the point of what people are willing to spend on recovering quality furniture rather than replacing it. Charging just that little bit more and I get no work. That little bit less and I get the majority of jobs I quote on.

The other part of my work involves making upholstered window pelmets for several curtain shops in town. I am the dearest in town; only two others do this. One guy who used to be my apprentice and charges less than me, and a curtain sewer in town who charges more than a third less than I do. Yet I do the work for more than both of them combined. But it also leaves me in a position where I haven't changed those prices in nearly 5 years now.

But I needed the vent. I hate running a business, my head wasn't made for this. But I'm a damn good upholsterer. Our troubles stem from being in a financial situation that begs for dual income, and was sustained by that up until 2 years ago, and will never be again. And I'm just tired of no rest, at home or at work. 10 years ago things weren't planned to fall this way but that's how it goes. I just need a break and some relief, and hopefully that relief will come in the new year. And yes, I could just give it up and go get a normal job, but I know what sort of work I'd be able to get and I wouldn't be able to keep our house for that.

Since the bulk of the work went offshore, we now have too many chiefs and too many ....

At least, they've kept a few of us cowboy programmers on stand-by.

Cosmo, don't answer if you don't wish. You started in say 1988, is your super scheme defined benefit or accumulation. Are public servants still offered defined benefit schemes?

Goughy, seems like your market has changed a lot in the last 20 years, how have you changed the way you do business?
If you have been doing the same thing for a long time, then its time. I have got no idea what, but this example might help. A local guy that used to repair TV's and VCRs hasnt lifted a screwdriver for many years. He just installs flat screen wall mounts and wires up home theatre systems (because most cant do it themselves) he makes more money and doesnt get to electrocute himself anymore.

I certify grain shipments for export, so that the exporter can actually get paid for them.

After working for a company being bled dry by an indian conglomerate and not being allowed to pursue new idea,s this is nirvana.
No 2 days are the same, it's mostly interesting and halfway through probation my bosses gave me a 10K pay rise.
I'll be suprised if I don't get another pay rise at the end of probation.
