timah!
8th December 2011, 07:29 PM
Hi NSW'ersI'll be down for a day in Syd on the 27th purely for a game. I've mentioned it previously to Virge and Titleist who are (hopefully still) keen for a bash. I think Virge had mentioned Long Reef as a possible option?I'm keen for pretty much wherever we can get on. Would be nice to meet a few more OzGolfers.

No chance of me getting off at 12, sadly. :( I'd consider driving over to catch up for post-game drinks, but it's a fair old hike from Penrith.

Shame, really - I love Long Reef!

Great. 1 more Ozgolfer to make 2 full groups. Biggest NSW event this year. And yet again, it has taken a Queenslander to do it.

BTW, I don't need a needle. All it takes is the sight of me 3 or 4 putting every green to put all of you down. 8-)

Jono,

Can Tony come for a Game ?

Yep, just rang TS. He's keen to play.

That makes 8. 8)

TS
13th December 2011, 02:57 PM
What time do you guys want? I can book it this Sat.

The course is in fairly good condition, but they decided to have a green a bit longer over XMAS. So the green is a little slower than normal, so we may not see too many 4 putt from Jono.

Captain Nemo
13th December 2011, 02:59 PM
Tony, whenever suits me, bear in mind it will take me 45 mins to get there, prob 1.15 hr+ for Tim?

KristianJ
13th December 2011, 03:02 PM
I'm fine for whenever...will probably be allowing for up to 2 hrs travel from Penrith if it's a mid morning tee time and I have to battle whatever peak hour traffic might be on the M2.

timah!
13th December 2011, 03:07 PM
Say 10am? Gives me 2hrs too easy that way.

TS
13th December 2011, 03:23 PM
They have comp until about 11am on Tue, so the earliest time would be sometime after 11.

There shouldn't be much traffic on 27 as most people are still on holiday.

timah!
13th December 2011, 03:25 PM
And non members can't play in the comp, or is it vets or something?
11 is fine.

TS
13th December 2011, 03:33 PM
And non members can't play in the comp, or is it vets or something?
11 is fine.

Tuesday normally is not an Open Comp, I may be able book couple of players in. But I don't like my chance for 8 players.

Tuesday morning is normally Lady's comp, we may have to wear a dress to play.

I will ask the Captain if I can have 7 guest in the comp on Tuesday, I will book a time around 10am if he let me. Otherwise, it will be around 11am.

Yes, food at Long Reef is fairly expensive for a golf club.

God I miss them.

Marcus was a top bloke and he went back to Malaysia as his Dad got crook. Then came back and bought a place up north.

I paid $5 for 2 pieces of Salami, 2 bits of cheap arse cheese and butter on half a long roll. Bloody disgrace.

I will grab another one next week - take a photo and then i am going to write the most cranky old man letter to the board . . . hopefully one that will get called in front of them.

We seem to be turning into an RSL club that has a golf course.

Drive 200m past the turn off to the club and have a pie at The Upper Crust. U turn and a couple of schooners at the club. Way to play it.

I'm on a month long coke fast, so water or the schooner at the clubhouse will have to suffice. I do love a good gourmet pie though!

Thanks everyone for the game. There was a stiff southerly blowing today. All the holes in Long Reef except 1st and 18th pretty much run east/west, meaning lots of crosswind shots. This made a lot of the holes very challenging. Good example was a short par 3 13th. Virge hit what looked like a perfect knock down 7 iron only to see the wind carry it OB left. Lawrence nearly did the same thing.

I scored 34 points, 24 on the back nine with birdie-birdie finish. Enjoyed playing in the group with Virge, Titleist and Timah.

Here's a photo of the 19th ...

Here's the club website's description of the 13th.

"The wind is the major factor in your club selection here. Many a ball has found the ocean when the wind is blowing. This hole is never a simple par."

Thanks for the game.

My golf may have been crap, but the company was good. (Practically a reunion of the NSW champs contingent.)

27th December 2011, 06:42 PM
Thanks for the game boys, and thanks TS for hosting. Had 33 points, 18/15. Was having a decent round until 2 wipes on the back 9, but that's golf. Loved the course, especially the back 9. One of the most enjoyable courses I've played on. The wind made it very tough, and very interesting.

Saw a poor woman lay on the ground for at least half an hour after being hit in the head with a wayward shot (not mine). The ambulance eventually took her away. The dirt track around the course is pretty dangerous for the walkers as it borders a few fairways.

KristianJ
27th December 2011, 07:39 PM
Yep, the wind was brutal at times. I also hit a 7 iron at 13 and had the same result as Virge...found my pill on the small patch of grass to the left of the walking track so was a bit annoyed at myself for not shouting "Fore". I played Long Reef in June and it was a far tamer creature back then, but in no way

Started wipe, wipe, 1, wipe for 8 points on the front 9, but wasn't too unhappy with 17 on the back.

First round with TS and Dotty, and another chance to see Matt belt some solid drives (especially him driving the 8th green), and a pretty nice feed pre round. The One Fifty Lashes on tap post-round was excellent too!

timah!
27th December 2011, 07:52 PM
Thanks for the round guys, and a big thanks to TS for hosting.

I really enjoyed the course, totally different to anything i've played, and that wind was brutal.

Was great to get a round with Virge, Titty and Jono. Jono's drive on the last was a great sight to finish the round.

Scores in the OP.

It's "Fore", not "Four" ...

I agree on the fence, BTW.

timah!
28th December 2011, 06:34 PM
A fence would just ruin that piece of land. Ban the walkers from that stretch of it. Or at least make them realise that they are walking along a golf course and to understand what the call of fore means.
Amazingly, the golfers seem to get around the course alright.

PerryGroves

It's public land and whilst it has been a golf course forever it was access to the beach long before that.

I grew up not far from there and whilst information is more readily available now I can't recall too many incidents.

Bad thing that happened to the young bloke, hopefully he is OK and we move on.

Grunt, would love to see you out there in your plus 4's telling some of the punters that walk through there that they are banned

Bullshit, they only need it for the tee off down the 16th - it would only need to be 3m high and you woudln't see itbehind the dunes.

They should get off their arse and build it - would little to no time and cost bugger all.

PS: WHere are my Chocolates . . .

They have almost no chance building a fence on the side of the 16th, the council wouldn't allow it. When they build the mounts on the left side of the 16th fairway, some of the houses in the headland claim it block their view to the ocean and object to it.

I can see the 16th tee is going to move 50m down the hills soon.

Sounds like a great day was had by all, I wish I'd been able to attend. Timah, from memory there is a sign warning people. Obviously it's not good the boy got hit, but at the end of the day his parents need to accept some responsibility for taking their son on a walk near the golf course.

I'm still curious whether they owned the kite that I saw flying up there about 10 mins beforehand, as the 'huddle' (as we went past) was in the rough, rather than the walking track.
