I'm not fussed really mate, and am happy to play anywhere. I would prefer a comp round though.

The greens are cored this week.

One thing I guess that may help with the coring. The greens are small so it may help avoid the 3-putts.

No worries Id it's still on. Not sure of a time yet - Nuff was going to book it in on Thursday when he's back, but I may as well give em a buzz tomorrow. I'd say we are looking at around 8.30 or so tee off. Maybe a bit earlier.

idgolfguy
25th October 2011, 01:08 AM
They don't do 8.30. More likely 6.30 to 7.40 am and 11.40 to 1.pm

Prob 7.40 then I would think.

The good thing about Chequers is that I can play off 6 in their comp even though I'm not affiliated.

The scores don't go to golflink and I can use the rounds as good practice. After the Nov. Champs I will pay my yearly fees for The Vines and join. And by then a few of the outstanding jobs around the house should be done and dusted.

Tried for Chequers and I was unsuccesful. Unless IDG can get us on there, we will otherwise have to tee off before 7 in the morning the bloke said. Dont know why though, last time I was up there with Nuff we tee'd off about 8 or so with no worries.

Definately not us, that's 4 sure.

Thanks to ID for hosting us again at his 'other' course.

But the tradition continues and Chequers wins again. Just picture the scenario of playing arguably Perth's trickiest
course and THEN add a 40 knot north-easterly. What u end up with is a donation :)

ID managed 21 pts, I fought hard for 28 pts after two double bogies in the first 3 holes (nearly getting blown off my axis mid-backswing on the first). Rubin (after shooting 41pts at Rocko yesterday) decided to stop counting after the 14th hole!

AND I'm still yet to hit that 4th fairway (with my first ball)
after 9 attempts now. Is it just me or is this one of the hardest par 4's I've EVER played?

Today was one of my toughest golfing rounds of all time for sure. This is why I reckon we should have an ozgolf day here. Anyone that can shot sub 80 round here off the
stick round there is a genius in my book.

I'm going to lay down the challenge.

Hit a couple of good shots, but no range time prior, so I was fighting my swing the whole day. Plus a 40mph wind force doesn't help.

Oh - and it's chequers. I reckon almost everyone will struggle to go close to handicap there. The fairway is like rough at any other course, and it gets worse from there.

<br />
:)))))))) I'd like to see that! Everytime I've gone back there (9 times now) feeling wiser about it, the course still bears its teeth.

Tee shots are tight, with forced tree carries and layups.

Fairways are hard, meaning the ball has to be trapped and hit with extra club everytime.

Chipping is a must if you miss a green as they grow this fluffy kikuyu all around the fringes.

Greens are also small, multiple-speed and have tricky breaks.

Would be a treat to watch anyone take this place apart.

Truth is, there is absolutely no margin for error ANYWHERE.

This track has it all, we should tee it up one sat or sun. It is a test and a half, a toss up btw The Cut in terms of trickiness. It is 6.2km long, but has so many elements that combine together that make it an assignment to tame.

We need to make this an ozgolf day!

I'm willing to put money on it that canuck doesn't shoot sub 80, or that anyone else of less than IDGG's handicap doesn't shoot 36 stableford points.

And I reckon even a bloke of his stature may need a wager to pull this one off.

2 things.
U can't really compare 1 course to another on difficulty because they are all designed differently and made to be played differently.
Secondly, I believe chequers is a more challenging test of golf in some ways than kb is, much in the same way KB is a tougher test than whaleback.

Contradicting statements I know, but you'll work it out.

$50 Canuck, for sub 80 off the bat. And if u pull it off I'll have the pleasure of seeing what will be one amazing display of talent. I'm not doubting u can do it (when ur on) but this has to possibly be one of the trickiest tracks around for a low marker.

Nuffie
29th October 2011, 10:54 PM
I'm not suggesting that I won't ever sort that track out coz I will soon. But I'm keen to see a solid low marker go round it and execute each shot with precision and effectiveness.

A thing I've learnt in 9 rounds there, is that it can be one thing to have all the shots at your disposal and know when or when not to execute them. But thing is they need to be executed 100% one after the other from tee, to the hole.

Trees carries need to be hit with complete conviction or else you get eaten by grass trees or may fail to get a club on the next shot. Perfect tee shots can even kick 90 degrees right or left and be lost. The 4th hole is one of the most difficult tee shots you'll play. Every single aspect of the game must be spot on.

Some see it as a goat track. Others see it as being in the 'too hard baskets'. And once I did think this way.

But what I see now is an ultimate test of golf. And once it is conquered, the consistency shown to pull it off will be more than enough to take any other Perth course to pieces.

Agree with ID. You also get at least a one club preferred lie on the fairways.

idgolfguy
30th October 2011, 10:00 AM
Being so far from, we could play early off our own tee and have a barbecue for lunch. The beer is cheap. We bought 4 sorties and Nuffie's Carlton and that came to $13.

They can tee off 1,10, 6 and 14. So rounds are 3.30 to 3.45. They get pissed off with longer rounds because most of the morning group are gone by 11.45 after presentations

Their comp rounds are on Saturday morning about 6.45, afternoon about 11.45. Sunday about 11.45.

idgolfguy
30th October 2011, 10:01 AM
Agree with ID. You also get at least a one club preferred lie on the fairways. Not just fairway but rough within the tree line.

Conditions could almost be like golf at the turn of the century. If the greens come back from the coring, they would be great.

Nuffie
30th October 2011, 03:25 PM
I still don't get it.

Lots of ppl can't see how this track would be harder than KB. But I also reckon it is.

The lack of bunkers is made up for the long, narrow fairways, tricky greens to read and the variety of different turf conditions encountered on the course.

All these things don't appear on paper when u consider the layout on face value. But once you get out there and actually see what there is to negate, there is indeed lots to overcome. It is one heck of a track to score well on. PTP said it himself, hardest course he's ever played in Perth by far and he's played lots. But I tend to believe 'trickiest' is the better word.

Yossarian
30th October 2011, 03:29 PM
You are making it sound tough because it is a goat track with decent greens with a fair bit of movement.

Nuffie
30th October 2011, 03:38 PM
It's also tighter than most other courses and has tree carries, and doglegs that veer sharply. Only those that have played the course really understand. That 4th hole especially is a real c$@t for these reasons (but in a good way) it's just too good for me.

Shadesy
30th October 2011, 03:41 PM

Nuffie
30th October 2011, 03:55 PM
I've played The Cut. And it has wider fairways, bigger greens to hit and a first 9 holes that has 6 holes that are parkland.

It is a real tricky course no doubt and compares closely to chequers in terms of trickiness. But for me, Chequers is the one course I'll put ahead of it.

MegaWatty

MegaWatty

Whaleback is traditionally in very good condition with one type of grass.

Yossarian
30th October 2011, 04:19 PM
I guess that make it easier than Chequers. I am so confused.

idgolfguy
30th October 2011, 05:30 PM
If you pitch onto green, you need to land either 3 feet short and run it on or on the green itself.

If you're on the 3' band, the ball checks and goes nowhere.
If you try to fly the trees on doglegs, you could run out if fairway and lose your ball.

Turf conditions make it more difficult to hit off as you need good impact.

It could be considered a goat track by those who aren't able to play it well.

Professionals have played the course in the past and found it difficult, in particular, 4, 7, 13, 14 and 16. Two par 3s at 168 and 175 require soft land shots due to the slightly raised but small greens. Par 5s are reachable in two, 470, 485 and 490 metres.

Very weather dependent - wind conditions.

Johnny Canuck

Sounds like a tricked up goat track.

There are a few dogleg holes, 4th, 7th, 13th, 14th that either you carry the trees and go for the big hit (risking running through) or hit a 180- 200m tee shot straight, and be faced with a 160 - 180m approaches to purched greens off tricky ground.

Any miss hit going over the trees results in either a lost ball, unplayable lie under a grass tree/hockey nuts or chip out sideways/backwards job.

Even the bigger hitter must not only be confident in taking the tiger line as it is fought with danger, but even the best possible shot can kick 90 degrees into the bush.

I don't consider it a goat track as it has improved quite a lot, but it certainly has tricks everywhere. One of those places where you have to be thinking with every single shot. And I think you would enjoy this challenge with your 'ultra competitive-esque' persona.
