View Full Version : Hypothetical - off the tee

TheTrueReview

All bullshyte posturing aside, on par 4s, if you could guarantee 220m off the tee to middle fairway everytime (with a club other than driver), would you take it?

Yes.

I'd take it on par 5's too. 220m is great.

Bullshit. No from me. Greed.

Nope, I would 100%. I dont hit anything consistent enough atm, but if i had a go to club that gave me 220m up the middle every time, I would use it at every opportunity. at most of the par 4's at rocko, that gives me 8i or less into the green.

No, I like hitting driver. I just don't like where it goes.

Why? I'd rather the chance of being 260m down...
Being 220m down the middle still won't guarantee you a GIR. But I'd much rather be going at a green with 9i than 4i...

This would make an interesting experiment. Drop the ball 220m down the fairway on all 4's and 5's and see what you shoot.

IMHO A pretty damn good score in reailty...well at least I would. At my home track the only times I have had a good score is when the driver has delivered 10+ fairways. And suprisingly that might include a few misshit ugly tee shots that scrape onto the mown surface 200m down.

Ha Ha... I was going to create a similar post a few days ago! I hit my 10.5 degree 909 D2 at 212-215m, in play, all day and had my best rounds with it (2 over and 3 over at Port Kembla)....but....I have a new 9.5 degree 910 D3 that I hit 12-15M further consistantly but nowhere near as predictably and maybe only hit 8/14 fairways.....so which do I play??? The 910 is certainly more exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stu, having recently played Port Kembla, you don't want to hit more than 200-210m drives there. More dog legs than at the Illawarra Dog Training club down the street from my house.

Did you boys take driver on the 10th and smack it onto the road?

I'd take 220m with any club.

No. If I was left hitting long irons into par 4s and never having a chance to hit par 5s in two then I would probably give the game away.

You should know better by now.

No ... but one of us did hit it on the road on the next hole ... prompting me to comment that from now on, when I drive to Shellharbour Hospital to work, I will stay close to the fence ... just about the only safe lane on the road, I think. ;)

P4s - Better than hitting long irons in for certain.
P5s - Depends on the course, but i'd say better (usually). A bad drive can usually be layed up to 100m anyway.

I don't play there often enough to be a regular hazard though.

kpac
20th September 2011, 08:33 PM
I'd take it on any narrow-average f'ways. But on a fairway with a bit of width, and is worth the risk i'd still hit driver.

If i had a club i could knock down the middle 175m i'd hit it more often than not - just so happens, all the clubs i carry are equally inaccurate, thus the driver is ALWAYS the play.

You've never driven past there and had a golf ball bounce past your car? I have, a few times now that I think about it!

Minor_Threat
20th September 2011, 08:44 PM
Why?It would be a step backward IMO. The opportunity to approach par 4s with scoring clubs would be drastically reduced, and par 5s no longer reachable in 2.Im currently running around 260m @ 75%, which makes scoring easier than your hypothetical IMO.

Stuartd147

In fact, the first 2 times I ever broke par, the driver stayed in the bag.

Depends on the individual holes, tee positions, wind etc, but I already do on a majority of our par 4s, and most of the time on 2 of our 4 par 5s. One of the ironies of the Nunchuk is I now use it (driver)on less holes because I can now hit it into trouble or tighter parts of the fairway more easily on some. Currently would use driver on 6 maybe 7 of 14, otherwise use 4i, Hybrid or 3W.

i know i should, but i wouldn't.
i am getting a bit more disciplined recently though. on tough driving holes i'm putting driver away and hitting hybrid 210-220m.
9 times out of 10 it's on the fairway and i'm glad i did it.

I'm hearing you brother. I've been caught walking to the tee with driver too many times simply because the other 3 have pulled driver. Now changing my habits. 2 hybrid; it's a wonderful thing. :)

Definately no and I have already reached 50!!!!

Even if I had the intention of using this option I would find the temptation too great on holes where I know that a good drive will allow me to go for the green in 2 on a Par 5, or just have a short wedge in on a Par 4, or have a go at cutting the corner on a dog leg.

So the answer must be no for me

EDIT: I have also already reached 50 and can out drive many of my younger playing partners

Hell, I'd take 200m straight down the middle, let alone 220m. Actually, I might even take 180m but I probably shouldn't admit that in public.

Stuartd147
21st September 2011, 07:05 PM
OK....played today, thought about this post, nearly took the "safe" 909D2 @215m......but could not resist the temptation, so took 910D3 and hit it great! Had 38 points and averaged around 230m off the tee. So I guess the moral (for me anyway) is that the quest for long and straight and "what might be" outweighs being a chicken-shit cautious bugger and playing "safe"....and being boring!

Okay; I know I should say yes but, I would be lying! I'm getting smarter at not pulling driver on every par 4 but, even with my current driving woes I just cannot take 3 wood or less on every hole!!

Why not - cos my frigging ego dominates my golf game!

I've already got the damn club in my bag to do this 90% of the time and don't use it nearly as much as I should so I'd be lying if I said I'd take it.

Silly really, the more I think about it.
