View Full Version : Shaft Puller - Prototype

chappy1970

I've been working on a prototype shaft puller for a little while now. A fair bit of trial and error has been experienced, but I've come up with a model that I think will fit the bill.

Below are some pics and excuse the mess, but a mad scientists lab is never clean, well at least that is my excuse.

Will probaly get IanO to do some UAT for me to ensure that it does what it is supposded to do.

How much did you save by building this?

Did you use this for my MP53s?

They turned out great, so must be fine!

That's the same vice I use for all of my work at home. If you turn the rubber clamp upside down, you get a better grip on the shaft.

Yoss I saved nothing, I like to tinker so don't find it a chore.

I have a shaft puller that works great, but it is a little more challenging to reproduce, largely due to the welding required.

This has no welding and has simple mechanics.

It has been designed to work for left or right handers and any graphite shaft tip diameter.

Do you just pull on the lever itself chappy, or do you insert another bar for extra leverage...?

Reason I ask is, IF you insert the extra bar then you could probably shorten the fitted leverage sleeve. Just to make it more compact and not stick out into the space as much.

Fit after some testing I found that the 1 foot lever is about perfect for the required force to pull teh head from the shaft. You're and experienced club fitter, so you know that smell that comes from a epoxy breaking down is a pretty clear indicator that the head is ready to be pulled from the shaft.

Your idea about an extension bar is not a silly one and will probably make sense when storage is a concern. hmmmm.

Exactly the reason why i posted pics, so that some good constructive feedback could be had. Cheers

Impressive looking piece of engineering there Chappy. I am sure that I have a club that I want to pull the head off, I also have a shaft with a 910 adaptor on that I want to recover.

So I am definitely willing to provide UAT services

chappy, if you intend to use the bar only as the lever, then leave it as is.

My only thought was that when walking around, in the middle of doing some work, you'll only need to spear yourself in the side with it once or twice before something changes!! Due to limited space, rather than risk leaving a 1ft bar sticking out just waiting for you to walk into it, you could shorten it and then use another bar inserted inside the square tubing. That becomes temporary, can also be longer than 1ft when fitted and thus giving you more pulling power and requiring less heat. Just have it attached to the bench under the puller and grab it when needed.

But the thing looks the goods, that is for sure. Nice job.

Long overdue update on this project, particularly for Virge :(

Below are two prototypes, I have a third in mind, but where the hell am I going to find the time for that. The welder I bought has made experimenting a lot easier and when I get the chop saw I'm on the hunt for, will make things easier again.

The first is my take on the hydraulic puller (affectionately named the JACKMAN Shaft Puller), I made one a couple of years ago and it worked well, but this works much more effectively.
This will be winging it's way to Virge shortly

http://i389.photobucket.com/albums/oo340/chappy1970-ozgolf/P1-2.jpg

The second is a more manually operated (known as BARMAN Shaft Puller) , but equally effective version as the hydraulic. This requires a little more feel and practice, but does the job. Not quite finished yet, but you get the idea.

Views, comments, etc welcomed.

Obviously, they will look a little different with a lick of paint on them, but all in all I'm pleased with them thus far

Ian, the flowers on the outside table (in the background) are a give away that a woman has been at work.

My cheese doesn't set foot in my MAN cave, not that there's any room in the bloody thing any way.

Gotta clean the thing up one of these days

Will make a special effort to clean it up and provide pics for those that are interested

20414There are a few members here using my shaft pullers and I'm sure you are well versed on how they operate.

Just in case you have a query, find attached a quick user guide I punched out this morning. Note I'm not trying to tell anyone how to suck eggs, just thought it might be useful for some.

Oh, and LipOut yours will be in the post this afternoon.

So the list so far is
BayBum
Ben T
IDGG
Ferrins
.I will have one ready this week and one ready next week, they are $120 each and historically postage to East Coast of Oz is around $18.
BayBum let me know if you want the first one and Ben also let me know if you are still keen.
If these are both spoken for, I hope to get the 2 done for IDGG and Ferrins by Mid December.
Sing out if you are/arn't interested.

Whilst this thread is up, I just wana say I've had mine for maybe 3 weeks now, and love it!!
Extremely easy to use, and haven't found a club that can't be pulled yet....... Even found a way to pull the Taylormade tips without melting the ferrules........
I'm like the mad scientist in my garage ripping things apart and throwing them back together any which way.
Thanks again Chappy, love it.........

Latest version of my Shaft Puller, including some modifications recommended by Virge and some other members here.

And yes, my worksshop is still a bloody disgrace, but I know exactly where everything is. And whilst the bench is very messy, actually have a separate bench where I do all my club work. Also have some plans for a new layout for the workshop, will have my digital SW scale next week and am in the process of manufacturing a new stand for my L/L machine. Now to find the time to do it.....ahhh

Now even my shaft puller has been superseded! What sort of changes did you make? Good to know I have a retro model ;)

chappy1970
4th July 2013, 07:50 PM
G the most noticeable change is that it now sits on top if the vice, which for mine is more efficient.

I also made a purpose made handle for the hydraulic screw, because using the jack handle can be a bit of a pain.

I have used a thicker metal for the body, but less of it, so overall the weight hasn't changed much.

The welding on the bottom now allows it to sit more stable on your shelf when not in the vice.

Chappy,

Sadly last night my Chappy Shaft Puller died (Some welds gave way and the bit that clamps the shaft no longer works). :( Are you still making them, and how much for a new one shipped to 4165 if you are.
